Size vs. Weight

I currently am 167.8 lbs, size 8, running 2.5 miles in 30 minutes. What I am finding odd about this is my size. I understand that weight shifts as you get older, but I really am having a hard time wrapping my head around wearing such a small size and still weighing a good bit for a gal who is 5'2". The last time I wore a size 8 I was 18 years old and weighed 130 lbs. Did universal sizing change in the past 25 years?

I have seen many newspaper articles about what most refer to as "vanity sizing." Women's sizes seem to have changed the most, but men's sizes have as well. I have a couple of pairs of pants that must be fifteen years old in size 40 that are tighter than new pants in a 38. I have a few new pairs of shorts that are medium, and I have never, ever been a medium anything.
I think as the population got bigger, clothing makers started changing sizes so we wouldn't feel bad about it.
But don't worry about it. You've made fantastic progress and look great.0 -
Yes. sizes have definitely changed a lot. I saved my favorite dress from the 80's. It is a size 10. It still does not fit. In today's sizes I wear 4's and 6's.0

Wow if that's the case I have a LOOOOOOONNNNNGGGGGG way to go. Funny that my waist is the same size as it was when I was 16 and wore a size 10 and right now I wear a 10. Hmmmmm....gotta think on this one a bit.0

I think size depends on the manufacturer. I fit into an 8 by JNY and a 12 by Dockers. I'm 5'9" and 152 lbs. Having started my MFP journey in a 24, I feel fabulous!0

It is all relative, isn't it? I started off in a 5XLT, and am now in a LT. I don't care as much about the difference in sizes over time.0 -
You mentioned that you run, and I think that makes all of the difference in the world when it comes to sizes. Someone who is your height and weight, who doesn't work out, may find themselves in a 14/16, simply because they have less lean muscle. I am 5'5" and weigh 144lbs, but wear size small pants (jeans size 6, some size 4s). You would *think* I'd have to lose a good 20+ pounds to wear those sizes, but I work out a lot, so I'm fit and more lean and can wear smaller sizes.0

I agree with ^^^ I'm about the same height/ weight and I'm barely a 12. I do exercise, but not as much as you and perhaps unlike you (fortunate for you lol) I have a lot of excess belly skin. But the exercise probably does make a bigger difference, in addition to the measurements of the clothes. But like others said it may also depend on the designer. However, given our similarities (and the 2 size differences in our wardrobe) I think you may be more toned now than you were when you weighed 130 - good fro you! I hope to reach the single digit clothes one day myself.0

They make clothes much more larger now than 10-20 years ago. Vanity sizing is what it is.
Congrats on your success!0
