Mad Hatters - Marvellous May!

Good Morning Hatters!!

May is here, and we can make it a marvellous month - and to get our mojo back (if anyone else also lost it in the past few weeks lol) I had a busy month in April, and admittedly got lazy and complacent about my eating and exercising. And I didn't lose sight of my goal, I deliberately ignored it. And not suprisingly...I wiped out right down that slippery slope of backsliding with all the accompanying emotions and disappointment in myself I was so sure I had overcome. Duh. Just a wee bit arrogant Snoozie?? Yup. Apparently so.. lol.. But as I've already said, thanks to all of you and all I've learned from everyone else's struggles and successes in the Hatters, I've learned from it and I'm going back to basics this month - shaking off the cobwebs and getting excited about working on my goal of eating better healthy food and moving every day. Logging and measuring. and losing the excess fat from my body in the process. It's a new day, a new month, and time to get our game ON! For those who haven't lost their mojo and have continued to show us it can be done - well done to all of you!! and thanks for keeping me motivated! Reading about your successes helps me every day, so keep em coming please!

And for anyone else who might have been in the same boat with me... here's an oar to help us paddle forward!!

Get back on track - don't give up on your goal! :flowerforyou:

Not long ago, you were energetic and determined to start your healthy lifestyle. Starting with enthusiasm and hope, you watched your food intake diligently, exercised like it was going out of style, and even avoided the temptation that seemed to lurk around every corner. You were confident that you were going to reach your goals once and for all!

Then certain tragedy struck! You ate an extra piece of birthday cake. Realizing you had “blown” your diet, you ate another and another and couldn’t get it together the next day either. Or worse, you missed one workout, and that turned into a whole week away from the gym. After that, your momentum to start over again was gone, and your gym bag hasn’t left the closet since.

Every time you misstep on your healthy journey, you have two choices: to keep walking backwards, which will surely take you even further away from your goals; or to accept your lack of perfection as normal and forgivable, and take not one, but two positive steps down the path that brings your closer to the future you want.

If you’re reading this, you might have been walking backwards for a while. But instead of waiting for the next day, week, month or even year to overhaul your habits, start TODAY. And start small. You can’t go from the recliner to running or from burgers to Brussels sprouts in an afternoon. But you can do one, two or even a handful of small things that will help you regain your momentum for healthy living.

When you feel like getting back on track is overwhelming, try one (or more) of these small steps each day.

1. Try a short workout. Take a walk. Even five or ten minutes is a great go!

2. Try a new recipe. Cooking healthy foods can be fun and it never has to be bland.

3. Eat a healthy breakfast. Your morning meal sets the stage for the rest of your day, so start if off right!

4. Drink your water. Try to aim for 8 cups each day and you’ll feel the difference!

6. Track your food today. No matter how it adds up, you’ll learn from it.

In tennis, losing one point isn’t the end of the world. It happens to the best of them. In fact, if you can consistently win a few more points that you lose, you may end up in the hall of fame (This line made me think of YOU, Janet!!)

With healthy eating and exercising, as long as you’re consistently out-stepping your steps back, you’re ahead of the game. You CAN get back on track today. Even if you’re moving slowly, you’ll be moving in the right direction! (Nicole Nichols)

Happy May Day Everyone… Thank you all for your well wishes and words of encouragement. Yes, you all are correct, I have to take this one day at a time, but ya’all know me… impatient and, well outright cheap… The biggest reason I am complaining that I am so bloated and mad that I am gaining weight back with the chemo… it’s because my clothes don’t fit and I refuse to buy a bigger size. I know, I know sounds stupid and I've had this “discussion” with my hubby a dozen times, but I won’t change, I guarantee it, I hate buying bigger clothes… :grumble:

Snoozie, I loved your words… They truly spoke to me this morning. I had taken the same route you did this morning when I realized it was May 1st. A year ago I was 16 lbs. lighter, was preparing for another 17k race and packing for my week church camp with my high school girls. TODAY is a new day, a new month, time to start over. Okay so we have cancer, diabetes, a stressful job, lack of motivation etc.. Whatever… YOU fill in the blank… WE MATTER dang it! We do! :flowerforyou:

Snoozie I take your oar offer and ask others to as well. Have you SEEN some of those rowing teams??!! Oooohhh baby they are hot, thin and fast…. Let’s go girls!

Like you snooz… I recreated my goals and profile that was yesterday, this is today… Look out May here come the MADhatters….:drinker:

I have my oar and I am getting on this crew team! Thanks Snoozie for getting us on board.
We can and will and are making May a fabulous month.
Leslye, chemo weight gain has to really suck, but if those pounds are what you need to destroy that cancer, then they have a job to do. It also sucks to need to buy larger clothes when you know that they are only going to be temporary because you will lose those chemo pounds when they have finished their job. But if your clothes don't fit it is just one more thing that is uncomfortable. What with chemo and cancer, you don't need clothes that hurt too. Cheap is good and when you need clothes for temporary sizes, there are places like Goodwill, consignment shops and gently used clothes on ebay. Keep being impatient and a fighter!
Snoozie, to your tennis analogy, I will add a baseball one, if you strike out every 6.5 out of 10 at bats, you will be a very hot and in demand .350 hitter, so we don't need to be perfect to be AWESOME.

    Evening Hatters

Just popping in to finish up some long overdue replies and thoughts to our earlier topic as well - Janet, I too could picture the beautiful walk you took up the SF style street - and today while I was out walking in the conservation area I paid attention to all the lovely little spring sproutings of flowers and greens.. we've finally had a few days of glorious weather here after such a cold and miserable spring and boy can you see it in everyone's behaviour - amazing what a little sunshine
can do to improve one's mood.. people were smiling and saying hello, and everyone just seemed in such good spirits! loved the baseball tip - have to admit when I read the tennis one I immediately thought of you!

Patrice - I know I posted on your wall, but honestly girl I am so proud of you - what a fantastic accomplishment on the marathon.. and planning a second one??? you give me inspiration to rememeber the only limitations are self imposed!! Huge congrats!!!

Leslye - I have friends who have and/or are battling cancer, and I have to tell you... every single one of you in that fight are my hero! I would like to echo Janet's and Susan's comments about the weight gain.. I know its gotta be so frustrating (as if you aren't dealing with enough.. REALLY.. the treatment has to ADD weight? But I agree with the others..both on buying goodwill for the interim, and don't worry about the weight it in the least for now, just focus on getting through the last 3 chemos and recovering 100% - the weight will come off on its own then or we'll be here to help ya get rid of it. when the time is needed, K? Right now.. just take care of yourself and your sister, and know we're all here for ya! I think in answer to JAnet's question about courage, I'll just bring you to show and tell and say this lady folks.. is the epitome of courage!

Tammy: "before the students start to skip and there's no time for make up" SKIPPING SCHOOL? perish the thought lol.. I wasn't a complete reprobate, but admit to perhaps missing a class or two in my latter years of high school! Imagine you're working your fingers to the bone, so will keep fingers crossed you get a little down time to play in the garden next weekend, as well as some down time with the family!

oh and talk about flashback? When I saw your line about "40 days" I immediately went back to our sunday school cantata performance where the song we sang started with "it... raineddddddd for 40 days it did it also rained at night.." we had to practice that whole show so long I can stil remember most of the words 40 yrs later.. gak!

Gotta make a cup of tea... back in a bit with more catch up!

note to self.... donuts do not belong in my home...

and the only things to buy "on sale" are clothes - not holiday candy - still working my way thru Easter... and Valentines Day....

Ugh.....   :noway: :noway: :noway:

How else does one stay in the new sizes?

I'm no help Carole. My downfall are the lays potato chips as u know. And I simply cannot have them in the house. Thats my only solution to my problem with them. I WILL eat an entire bag on my own. I'm like a crack addict with them I simply have no control so have to force myself not to have them in the house. I even admit to shutting my eyes in the grocery store and repeating over and over no you will not buy them if they are on an end cap on sale :(. Sad but true

A tad late of a response to Snoozie's oar offer, but heck, better late than never, right? Anyway, here's a nice assortment of oars for anyone in need, I know I certainly am!
Think I'll take the second one from the end with the red ribbon on it  , but if anyone else wants that one I'll be happy to share :-)

I'm with you Carole and Snoozie: NO treats belong in my house. Chips are definitely my biggest Achilles heel also, so I don't even think about them any more, but I am so pathetic that if I even try to keep Trader Joe's dark chocolate covered berries around I eat practically the whole dang bag in one sitting. SO sad that I can't even resist healthy snacks!!!! Row, Susan, Row with my cool paddle!

And for anyone else who might have been in the same boat with me... here's an oar to help us paddle forward!!

Snoozie... I actually have a red canoe in my back yard (from when I was younger) hubby and I used to go - Delaware River in the Poconos... so if anyone needs a ride, I have the canoe... and still have the paddles / life jackets....(so someone else can have mine)....

    See you soon...

I am ready to claim my mojo back !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! This doing everything I know and seem to get no where is wearing me out I have my exercise plan ready and as soon as school is released into action I will be. Now that I have adjust this and adjust that and nothing has really seemed to do what I have wanted I am surrendering to that dreaded E word that many of us hate. And I will speak to the doctor about the meds he prescribed and if there could be any connection reviewing my dairy I had just began to lose again when he put me on them and a couple of weeks later the weight lose stalled out again. What ever the answer in three weeks I am adding some daily movement to my schedule.

Carol I am feeling that calling. I did make brownies tonight. I ate a HUGE one but I did use applesauce saving the calories vs the carbs. I felt that was the better choice.

Just one day to the weekend and they are forecasting record lows LOLOL I am thinking this is going to be a winter garden at this rate

quick throw me the oar, i have been sinking! add me to the list of people who cant be trusted with certain foods in the house. last night i was in a food blackout, i dont even know everything i ate! but it all started with the edy's slow churned ice cream cups at 160 cals a decent ocassional snack. i think i ate 3, but unless i check the garbage i cant be sure. dont know what happened, except worrying about son who has kidney stones and in pain and DH who has some mysterious illness. Everytime he gets sick I worry that his colon cancer has returned and spread in unusual ways. I dont think I used to be so paranoid. unfortunately old patterns pop up, when he was going through the cancer I used to "joke" that every pound he lost jumped on to my side of the bed. so I need to stop the mindless eating and find something else to do other than eat the worry away.
right now i am sitting in a hospital garden waiting for my sister to finish treatment. There are bushes filled with white flowers, look similar but not exactly like lilacs. suddenly about 30 bees are flying from flower to flower, I will ignore them as long as they ignore me!
Carol, when you asked how do we stay in the new sizes I was wondering the same, but i think that is why it is so important to get rid of old sizes, no backups WE ARE NOT GOING UP A SIZE!
Good weekend to all the hatters. I am getting a pedicure tomorrow, I dont care if it is still in the 60s next week I am sick of shoes and going to sandals!

The oar picture is perfect. I don't care which one I use, all will give me/us splinters (pain/discomfort) until I/we get calloused (habitual in logging/exercising).

Happy Friday everyone! Hope your day is going fantastic! I wanted to say thank you for all the kind words and virtual support you all are offering me right now. Words can't express how it makes me feel. :blushing:

I've been too busy this week. My fourth (of four) children is graduating from high school on May 30 and my third is graduating from college on May 20. They either need a ride or need my car for all kinds of AP exams, end of year stuff, etc. It's good stuff. Of course, work rises up when I'm busiest at home. But I'm starting to think I may get my own life next Fall. We'll see!

Have a good weekend, Everyone. Do something *de-stressful*. It sounds like everyone could use it.

Sue - thanks for the gorgeous picture.
WHat a week this is going to be, keeping my fingers crossed that son's kidney stones don't disrupt things! My first daughter is going to be 30 on Thursday! My dad who married after being a widower for 20 years is celebrating his tenth anniversary on Friday. My baby girl is graduating from college on Saturday and of course Mother's Day on Sunday. I will try to stay focused with all the celebrations.

But weeks like this remind me of how blessed my life has been, through sickness and health! I remember one time when I was despondent about being obese, I was angry at my maker for making me fat. It was one of the few times in my life when my mind gave me a response and I understood that of the many gifts I was given, a fit and healthy body was given to me, but it was one that was hidden and I would have to work to let it be.
So I am thankful for my family and all that they mean to me and I am thankful that I finally decided to take advantage of this gift of a healthy and fit body!

    Hi Everyone...

Sounds like May and June will be extremely busy....

I've got Jr's trip to FL, his prom, graduation, youth group activities..... Will be glad / sad when fall gets here....

Today was espcially sugar filled, but not going to worry about it... life is a journey and getting there is half the battle!

Janet - I can totally understand being grateful... we've been married 20 years (last Aug) and we've weathered it all - rich and poor, thick and thin, sickness and health.....better and worse... luckily many more happy times than not...:blushing:

    See you soon.

    Good morning, everyone!

Leslye,it is good to see you back . I am so sorry to hear about your cancer..Just from what I know of you ,so far, I know you will beat this....You are a fighter.

I have been a bad girl lately, I have been consuming too much sweets! I can't blame anyone but me....I had to claim back some lbs this morning, that don't appear to be just fluid. I tried to enjoy the process of logging them back in as much as I enjoyed the sugar , It didn't work! Sugar =is such sweet sorrow... : ( It always shows up in the end .(BUTT)

Loving this cool weather we are having here, in May. I thought I was ready for warmer weather ,until It got to 80degrees the first day, and then I realized It was too HOT!

Hope everyone has a lovely day!

A friend gave me this recipe she had seen on line...Looks quick and easy.....thought I would share.......

    Hoisin Skillet Salmon
Salmon is a great source of heart-healthy omega-3 fatty acids and looks beautiful on a bed of vitamin C-rich broccoli. Topped off with colorful red pepper flakes and fresh cilantro, this bright, low-calorie meal takes under 20 minutes.
    10 min prep / 10 min cook

    Ingredients:
One 15.5-ounce can low-sodium black beans, drained and rinsed
    2 tablespoons hoisin sauce
    1/4 teaspoon red pepper flakes
    2 cloves garlic, crushed
4 cups medium broccoli florets (about 8 ounces)
Four 5-ounce salmon fillets, skin removed
    Juice of 1/2 lemon
2 tablespoons roughly chopped fresh cilantro, optional
    Kosher salt
    Directions
Combine the beans, 3/4 cup water, hoisin sauce, red pepper flakes and garlic in a large skillet. Top with the broccoli, nestle in the salmon and bring to a simmer over medium heat. Once simmering, cover the skillet and cook until the salmon is flaky and just cooked through and the broccoli is crisp-tender, 5 to 6 minutes. Drizzle with lemon juice and sprinkle with cilantro if using. Add salt to taste and serve.

That recipe sounds amazing... and so very simple. And really any fish would be good with it. I've been getting into Mahi Mahi and Tilapia lately, both should be good. Can't wait to try it... maybe this weekend...

The recipe looks great and I wish I could try it.
Has anyone ever seen a hypnotist? When I was very young I almost choked on a fish bone. Since then I have not eaten fish, except the extremely processed type, tuna in a can or package and years ago I would eat a McDonalds fish filet or as a child fish sticks were a perennial Friday dinner. I see and read all the benefits of fish and I have actually tried eating various kinds of fish and I have a total gagging experience. Sooo I was thinking maybe a hypnotist could get me over my fish choking phobia.

Janet - look up "fish bones bread".... there is a thread there that talks about how bread is supposed to "dislodge" any bones that are stuck when you swallow....
