Advice on starting non-retarded lifting

Hello all, I was wondering if I could get some insight from you all about transitioning to a serious strength training program after wasting a lot of time with the likes of Jillian Michaels. Don't get me wrong Jillian is my booski and was a decent starting point but we've grown apart and it's time for me to move on. That said I joined the local YMCA and bought a copy of NROLW and was ready to start weeks ago until I was sidelined by pretty intense lower back pain. So I went to the doctor and underwent all kinds of poking and tests only to basically be told my back hurts because I'm fat and my pain will go away when I lose weight and strengthen the muscles. So I guess what I want to know is if NROLW is still okay or if there are some other exercise/program I should do first? The doctor offered to write a PT referral but he thought I would ultimately be better off starting a consistent workout program on my own. And I guess the reason I'm asking is because my back still hurts when I'm doing the exercises, nothing debilitating but enough that I have to stop more often then I like. So any insight or thoughts? Sorry for rambling and thanks in advance.
BTW, my stats are 5'7, female, with a current weight of 218 (ugh!) and I am losing pretty consistently.

As long as your doctor is ok with it (and it sounds as though they are actively encouraging it) then I can see no reason why NROL would not be a good place to start for strength training.0
