I used mfp about this time last year and dropped 24 lb. Two weeks ago I was diagnosed with type 2 and a thyroid problem. My doctor prescribed meds and exercise. I was not given any specific diet or requirements to test bg. Since I'll be tracking my food here I'm hoping to get some ideas of target levels for sodium, fat, carbs etc.
Looking forward to learning from the group and being an active participant.

    Hi there tstane,

It's great you've made the decision to return to the My Fitness Pal Program. A new diagnosis of Type 2 diabetes can be overwhelming at first, especially when being sent on your way with no further nutritional instructions on what to do next.
The great news is, you've made the decision to turn back to the My Fitness Pal Program.

This is a very individual condition we share as we all are managing our diabetes differently through the diabetes meds
we take and the foods we eat in addition to any other health issues we face in managing and achieving good blood sugar control.

If you haven't already, I would encourage you to seek a recommendation from your healthcare provider on a diabetes
management clinic in your area if available. I found the program I attended to be very beneficial to me when diagnosed.

Additionally, it's paramount to good blood sugar control to monitor your blood sugar levels with a glucose meter if you don't currently have one. Testing upon waking first thing (fasting) in the morning, and before each meal, then again 2 hours after each meal will help you to determine what effects the food choices you've made on your blood sugars.

The web site below has with a wealth of information to address some of the many questions you might have going through your mind.

    www.bloodsugar101.com

This a a very supportive, helpful and encouraging group of people eager to help and share their experiences in hope of seeing you succeed on your journey.

I welcome the opportunity to be of help in the future.

    Welcome and best of health!

Hi tstane and welcome to this group. As bdubya has posted Diabetes is a very individual condition and each of us has to find out what works for us as individuals and then stick to that plan like glue. I would certainly endorse his advice to seek a place on a diabetes education course. Many people in this group self test regularly. With specific reference to your questions, there is a consensus view that it is good practice to focus on complex carbohydrates rather than simple carbs. A reasonable initial target to aim for would be 45 net carbs per main meal with say 20 net carbs for snacks if required. The carb targets set by MFP are not specific to diabetics and should be adjusted downwards. Regular A1c checks would be an essential part of your care programme as would regular checks for neuropathy especially in your feet and regular retinopathy checks. Background reading is to recommended because information is power. There is a wealth of information on the various threads in the group. Take your time to read over these threads and get a feel for the site. When you're ready to ask questions you will find lots of genuine people in the group who are willing to share their experience and to provide you with lots of support and encouragement. I wish you well in you journey to a healthy and active life and will certainly help in any way I can.

welcome tothe group. Bdubya55 does hit the nail on the head. This is a great group and everyone is very helpful and supportive. There are many great resources out there. American diabetes association is another good webite to check out. Feel free to add me as a friend as we can all use support.
