Quick deadift question

Anyone can answer....

I've been noticing that my legs are never really gassed after deadlift day, unlike squat day or front squat/Romanian dead lift day.

I think it's a combination of my grip strength (or more accurately lack thereof) as well as my trunk and abs doing some extreme catching up, but I was just curious if I was the only one seeing this.

I wouldn't call it a problem, just a curiosity. Thanks!

If you are lifting conventional, you'll feel it in your hamstrings, lower back. If you lift sumo, you will feel in in your inner thighs.

Conventional for now. I feel it in my back, not yet in my hammies. I think I answered my own question and some of the support muscles are just getting themselves caught up. Just wanted to see if anyone else had a similar experience.

Sumos are brutal on the inner thighs.

I did, until I learned that quad activation was the proper way to get the bar moving from the floor.

I have to work on that also. I think I'm not leaning back enough and my back is taking the brunt of the lift off

If you're feeling it mainly in your back, then your form is wrong. You should be lifting with your glutes and hamstrings and then your quads should engage.

How far apart are your feet? Are you planting your heels?

You should have someone videotape your form and see what you're doing. My guess is that you have a lower back curve that is causing this and you may be trying to pull too much before your form is correct. Lower the weight a little bit and try to push your heels through the floor with your lift. Pull your core tight when you pull.

rep range is a big thing for "feeling" it and typically deadlifts are done at a lower rep range than the other exercises you mentioned.

BTW sumo you will feel it in the glutes and upper back more so than hamstrings and lower back for conventional. (Most ridiculous glute burn ever from training for strongman comp max deadlifts at 400lbs in 90seconds! *kitten* gave out before anything else )

I've found recently that the DL paused at knee and then locked out (as in sheiko routine) is awesome for cueing this. If you are only thinking about moving the bar 4" or so you really tend to just use leg drive rather than upper body at all. (for me and clients anyway)

Thanks, I will do this next time. I always try to focus on maintaining proper curve in my lower back as I know that skyrockets the injury risk, never focused on heels though.

Tough to say how far apart my heels are. Normal? I just walk up, get my shins right on the bar then squat down and grab it. Will get my wife to come and videotape me a few times this week

Add on- I"m going to be doing an introductory Crossfit class next weekend (not the holiday weekend the week after) where they will have me doing a lot of these movements. I'll ask them for critiques as well.

Thanks again everyone, really appreciate the help and the overall environment in this group.
