Allaying family/friends fears of Ketosis

"I'm only saying this because I'm concerned for you.... "

"Ketosis is dangerous... "

"Have you researched all the risks that a Ketogenic diet entails?"

Have you heard something like that before from well-intentioned family/friends about your way of eating? How do you allay their fears/concerns that you're in ketosis, which they insist is dangerous and/or unhealthy? My older sister has said something similar to me - despite the fact she sees I've lost weight, am feeling much better, and am benefiting from the energy that comes from keto eating. I have sent her various links from NIH on the studies of ketogenic diet's benefits (especially for someone like me with PCOS and insulin resistance) and told her how Ketosis works.

She thinks a ketogenic diet is unbalaned and dangerous. She has used this article to back it up (go to bottom of page where it says "Unhealthy metabolic state"): http://www.webmd.com/diet/high-protein-low-carbohydrate-diets

...this despite the fact that a ketogenic diet is not a high protein diet at all!

What would you say?

I would tell them they're thinking of diabetic ketoacidosis, which is something entirely different. It's like the difference between INflammable and NONflammable. One material ignites easily, one does not. People think Inflammable means "can't catch on fire" when it means precisely the opposite. Flammable=inflammable. Synonyms. Will post more later if I can remember... I'm about to be radio silent for a few days.

    *edit*

http://www.webmd.com/diet/high-protein-low-carbohydrate-diets this is a load of horsecrap.
Kidney failure? ONLY IF YOU HAVE PRE EXISTING KIDNEY DISEASE.
High cholesterol? ALL OUR FOOD IS HIGH IN GOOD AND LOW IN BAD, UNLIKE YOUR VEGETABLE OIL FRIED POTATOES.
Osteoporosis? PROVE IT. YOU CANT. BECAUSE ITS WRONG. "A diet that increases protein at the expense of a very restrictive intake of plant carbohydrates may be bad for bones, but not necessarily a high-protein intake alone." Good thing y'all eat lotsa plants, huh? and it's NOT a high protein diet. It's moderate protein, high fat.
Cancer? HA. KETOGENIC DIETS STARVE CANCER CELLS. CANCER CANNOT SPREAD EASILY OR EFFICIENTLY IN KETOSIS.
Unhealthy metabolic state in which your body burns fat for energy instead of sugar? SOUNDS LIKE EXACTLY WHAT AMERICA NEEDS TO GET OUR FAT *kitten* IN SHAPE.

    Great comparisons!

The trouble is my sister usually checks out WebMD for medical questions, etc. And no doubt she was referring to that part on that website that stated that Ketosis was an "unhealthy metabolic state" and "dangerous metabolic state". Sheesh! *rolling eyes*

The page then goes on to state: "The experts say to achieve permanent weight loss you must change your lifestyle. This means following a lower calorie diet that includes grains, legumes, fruits, and vegetables combined with participating in regular physical activity." <---- Something which I personally tried for years, with no success!

She seems to take WebMD as gospel and totally disregards the links I send her. I hope she gives some heed to the NIH links showing studies re: keto diets for the obese and especially for those with insulin resistance and PCOS.

I keep my exact diet to myself for the most part. Not worth dealing with concerns/questions.

So do I... I don't usually speak about my eating habits unless I'm asked pointedly about it. But, of course, as a family member (she's my sister) we eat together frequently and she sees what I will eat and what I don't eat... and for big family dinners, I will usually ask what's on the menu and ask for substitions or if I can bring my own dish. So questions are bound to come up, right?
