RNC Scandal

As long as the government can provide a photo ID to all voters effectively, efficiently, and at no cost, then i have no problem with some of these voter ID laws...apart from the fact that they don't actually prevent the type of fraud they're supposed to prevent, which doesn't really have a history of happening.
As to my first three qualifications, if that means that someone has to come to a voter's residence (assuming they have one) to take a photo, then so be it.
All I've ever needed to vote was a voter registration card. Clearly it's been a huge problem that needs to get addressed. We should definitely focus on that instead of figuring out ways of preventing a Florida 04 event again. /sarcasm.0 -

I agree with all of this. Scary times ahead!0 -

It was pretty entertaining during a crappy day! thanks!0 -
Wake me if an actual debate springs up out of this mash of paranoid hack rambling, which ironically has managed to sprinkle gasoline on the "it's not us, it's you" partisan squabbling bonfire-- instead of defusing it.
Awesome work.
Hey, Swanny and I were happily reciting 80s rock hits.
But I do have to point out that while the Democrats did elect a former Klansman in Robert Byrd, the Republicans did elect a current Klansman in David Duke. He was even seen as a viable presidential candidate.
*runs off for more gasoline*
This whole thing cracks me up. Without going down the road of who we nominated or elected decades ago, I can honestly say living in Indiana, racism as alive and well in every culture and every race. I know southern democrats who wouldn't vote for Obama because he was black. And the most hilarioius to me is the conservatives I know personally who are now once again playing the victim, saying that just because they don't like Obama, every one shouts they are racist. No, I thought they were racist before when I heard them use words like spick, wetback, coon, and ****** to describe a person. But I guess they left their racism out of the voting booth.
There's a little basket right off to the side of the door. A little old guy sits there and watches your racism while you vote and hands it back when you are finished.0 -
I find it funny that I need to provide a photo ID to buy a bottle of Nyquil but don't worry about it when voting.
Screw Nyquil... I have to have my ID swiped (yes, swiped) to buy Sudefed.... the good stuff, not that crappy PE stuff that doesn't work.
Anyway, I have always had to show an ID anytime I vote... Local, State or Federal... Even before all this mumbo jumbo about Voter ID laws.... So I am kinda curious as to how people vote without them anyway.... But my biggest concern, isn't so much those that vote in person... or even register Mickey Mouse or Al Capone on the voter registrations list (mostly to bulk up their numbers anyway so the Push the Vote type people can get their $5 per 100 registrants or whatever the hell their compensation)... but that they essentially throw away the votes of those in the military and overseas... they don't even count the majority of them. Many of those overseas (from what I understand) don't even get their absentee ballots in time.0 -
Not sure how we switched to Voter ID, but the discussion on the ID topic keeps getting combining two different issues.
1. From a theoretical/academic standpoint, is there a need to create more stringent ID requirements before people can vote?
2. What is the purpose of the voter ID laws that have been passed in Republican-controlled swing states since 2008 (or 2010).
The two are not equivalent. One could make a case for having stricter voter ID requirements and still have problems with the laws that have been passed in Republican-controlled swing states in recent years.
The most complimentary thing you can say about #1 is that it is a solution in search of a problem. The overwhelming evidence has shown that incidents of true voter ID fraud in this country are virtually non-existent. In our current climate of hyper-surveillance, if one did decide in good faith that enhanced voter ID was necessary, then the true good faith and the true intent of the lawmakers would be shown by, concordant with the passing of the legislature, an active and aggressive push to ensure that all eligible voters could easily obtain such ID at no charge.
In the case of #2, again, the overwhelming evidence is that these laws have been passed for one reason and one reason only--to suppress the vote in areas and populations that traditionally vote Democratic. There is no question that this is the intent--the evidence is clearer than that presented at the OJ trial. You can't just say "I am in favor of voter ID, therefore these laws are automatically good and have a noble purpose". Looking at the details of the laws, the statements and backgrounds of the legislators who sponsored them, and the states in which they have been passed, the proof is beyond the shadow of a doubt.0 -

But the reason you have to swipe your ID for sudafed is cause they make meth out of it and they track if your buying to many boxes. The people who make meth will actually pay other people to go in the store and buy sudafed so they dont get pinged.... I may be mistaken, but I believe they are only not counted when the margin of victory is greater than the number of votes counted.
But, just as I think the goal should be for every citizen to vote, I also want every vote counted. So, even given the extra cost, I would be more than willing to support a law that dictated the counting of every vote, no matter what.0 -
I feel like this isn't getting as much attention as I would imagine it should. Is it safe to say that with the actions of the GOP yesterday they have just shot their own foot and ruined any chance of electing their candidate in November? I was horrified to the point that I couldn't even watch the events on tv last night. From the new "rule" change allowing delegates to be reassigned to the censorship of delegate roll call to the fact that a bus driving Virginia delegates opposing the new rule change kept them from attending until AFTER the vote had been finalized, I have never seen a more corrupt process in my life.
Since I'm no expert on this process. How can duly voted delegate be told that they HAVE to vote for Mitt Romney? The state of Maine for example, the Ron Paul delegates were denied seats on the floor and one Maine delegate stated, "We were elected by the people of the Republican Party," he says. "You have to protest for election fraud and if you don't stand up for election fraud now, I mean, if your votes don't count, why even bother? Why even vote if your vote doesn't count?" "We would have probably stood in line and voted for Romney in November, but not if he's going to do this for us," he says. "Not if he's going to disenfranchise the voters of the state of Maine. If you're going to do that, I will not stand with this party. This is ridiculous. These people were elected by the state and they're not allowed to be on the floor."
Just for fun. A video of a Georgia delegate casting their states votes for Romney and Paul. You can hear the mic being cut when Paul's name is mention and you can hear the NC worker congratulating someone on muting the mic.

Do you think that this could cost Romney the vote in November? With such a close race, and the number of people who WOULD have voted for Romney if nominated fairly will now not be voting for him.. Is this a preview of what the election will be like come November? Corrupt and unfair?
To get back to your original question--at a party convention, those in charge can pretty much do whatever they want. The goal of a party convention is not to "hear all voices" but to create a carefully choreographed presentation that fires up the base and kicks the campaign into high gear.
Doesn't make it right, but what happened to the Paul supporters is pretty standard stuff.0 -

I think if you buy more than 3 or 4 boxes within a couple of days someone is going to ask you questions....... Normally they bust people walking out with 4 or 5 boxes at one time0 -

That seems kinda silly. All you have to do is rob a freight train of 1000 gallons of methylamine and you are good to go.0 -

I know... and I still think it's stupid... they are essentially tracking the law abiding citizen to nab the relatively few that use it for nefarious reasons... and those making meth will find other ways, so I don't see how this is stopping them.
I can't even buy a months worth at a time... You know, so I don't have to keep frequenting the drug store.0 -

Actually, there is an actual milligram (or is it gram and even then it would only be like 2 or 2.5) amount you can buy each month. What sucks is that the maximum amount that you are legally allowed to buy barely covers 30 doses. Places like Walgreens and CVS will print on the reciept how much you are allowed to buy and how much you have purchased.0 -

I agree. And even now we hear more about what happens at conventions... the darn things used to be held in relative secret.0 -
This plays right into the hands of the Democratic party narrative of Republicans attempting to disenfranchise any voters who would vote against them.
The democrats did nothing about the Black Panthers intimidating voters in 08. They are the last people who should say anything about disenfranchisement.
Well nothing except charge the TWO people, who incidentally had no affiliation with the government on any level, with federal crimes.
Justice Department Seeks Injunction Against New Black Panther Party
Lawsuit Seeks to Prohibit Voter Intimidation in Future Elections
WASHINGTON - The Justice Department today filed a lawsuit under the Voting Rights Act against the New Black Panther Party for Self-Defense and three of its members alleging that the defendants intimidated voters and those aiding them during the Nov. 4, 2008, general election.
The complaint, filed in the United States District Court in Philadelphia, alleges that, during the election, Minister King Samir Shabazz and Jerry Jackson were deployed at the entrance to a Philadelphia polling location wearing the uniform of the New Black Panther Party for Self-Defense, and that Samir Shabazz repeatedly brandished a police-style baton weapon.
“Intimidation outside of a polling place is contrary to the democratic process,” said Acting Assistant Attorney General Grace Chung Becker. “The Voting Rights Act of 1965 was passed to protect the fundamental right to vote and the Department takes allegations of voter intimidation seriously.”
According to the complaint, party Chairman Malik Zulu Shabazz confirmed that the placement of Samir Shabazz and Jackson in Philadelphia was part of a nationwide effort to deploy New Black Panther Party members at polling locations on Election Day. The complaint alleges a violation of Section 11(b) of the Voting Rights Act of 1965, which prohibits intimidation, coercion or threats against “any person for voting or attempting to vote.” The Department seeks an injunction preventing any future deployment of, or display of weapons by, New Black Panther Party members at the entrance to polling locations.
The New Black Panther Party for Self-Defense, which claims active chapters nationwide, is distinct from the Black Panther Party founded by Bobby Seale in the 1960s.
The Civil Rights Division enforces the Voting Rights Act of 1965. To file complaints about discriminatory voting practices, including acts of harassment or intimidation, voters may call the Voting Section of the Civil Rights Division at 1-800-253-3931. More information about the Voting Rights Act and other federal voting laws is available on the Department of Justice’s web site at www.usdoj.gov/crt/voting/index.htm
So while you compare the elected officials acting on behalf of their party at a national convention to two fringe characters from a fringe group that no one elected or takes seriously... you still couldn't manage to get it right.
Keep towing that party line. It seems to be working well for you.
ha ha party line. oh no, not an injunction, which only came after there was enough complaints. The whole organization should be prosecuted for this and the bounty placed on George Zimmerman. Are you that blind to think that if this had been a conservative group behind this that the DOJ wouldn't have brought the pain to them? Then again, I'm sure you think that MSNBC's lack of coverage of black speakers at the convention last night wasn't planned either.
What have the leaders of the GOP done to prevent people from voting? You libs are so pathetic when it comes to race it's sad.
Your party is the one who fought the civil rights movement
Your the party that elected former clansman Robert Byrd into party leadership
Your party has Joe Biden running around using slavery as a scare tactic
Your party is the one who thinks minorities, poor and the elderly are too stupid to get an ID for voting
Your party seems to think everyone is racist and there is a legitimate need for affirmative action.
Your party is for a abortion. Minorities make up the largest percentage of this infanticide
Many liberals will call any republican minority a sell-out, uncle tom etc because they don't belong to the party
Don't even dare go down that race road until your party stops using it to divide the country.
Wasn't there a near riot of Republicans in Florida in protest against the recount? I don't seem to remember any arrests being made.0
