Just saw the new group and wanted to jump in. I've been following your posts here (and your blog) for a while and wanted to thank you for the information and willingness to assist others. You provide solid, sensible info without hype or broscience, a breath of fresh air. I look forward to being able to hear what you have to say without having to sift through all the other threads in the main forums.

Welcome!

Second one in. :p And you haven't even posted on your wall yet that you're doing this.

I must spend too much time on this site. But apparently not as much as Anvilhead.

Hey guys, thanks for signing up already. I wasn't going to announce this until I figured out exactly what I wanted to do with it. I've not used the group feature here before. After thinking about it and getting pissed off on the general forum, I thought this might be a nice alternative.

What are your thoughts about the groups? Have you been using them? Think this would be a worthwhile endeavor?

...Think this would be a worthwhile endeavor?
I think you'll have your hands full with questions in a very short time once it catches on!

I think it's very worthwhile. It will be a good place for people to get sound advice as opposed to the main forums where many posters are very helpful, but extremely....misguided, shall we say.

the upside of groups is that you can moderate out stuff you don't care for. the downside is that you don't reach the unwashed masses very well. so, I dunno. It *could* be great though, doesn't hurt to try.

I'm loving the fact that I can make stickies!
I *think* (I haven't played with this but most forums work this way) you should be able to block people from replying to your stickies - it might be called "locking" or something like that. Give it a try.

Yup, most forums do work like this. I'm moderator on a number of forums and they all work this way. It helps members gain access to useful information easily. And it prevents important information from getting buried. MFP is the only forum I've seen that doesn't institute the use of stickies, which unfortunate since I've seen a lot of good information posted get buried never to be read again. At least these groups offer an alternative, although the masses won't see them. Oh well... it's a step in the right direction.

I think if you make it clear that your approach (if not the goal for the group) is more about education and information dissemination rather than simply telling people what to eat when, it'll be great.

I won't have a problem with that. I'm all about keeping people focused on the big picture rather than the granular details. The amount of reductionism that most people are operating with tends to lead to that whole 'missing the forest for the trees' issue.

I'm glad you're excited. I'm excited too. Let's just remember that we need 'heads' for this community to strive. From what I'm hearing, many of these groups die off because there isn't enough activity. When you see people asking questions on the main forum and not receiving adequate attention, please point them here.

Haha, thanks. That's Johanna. She's not quite the baby anymore... turned 2 in June. But she absolutely LOVES hanging out in 'daddy's gym' still.

I remember when I first started doing web-based consulting... we're talking back in 2003 or so. I just have to shake my head. Designing meal plans was amazingly a big part of my programs. I'd extensively interview clients about their likes and dislikes, allergies, habits, family, etc and design a meal plan with alternatives that matched where their calories and nutrients needed to be.

Of course this was illegal. That's well beyond the scope of a trainer's professional conduct. Not to mention I was too naive at the time to realize how negatively rigidity is when trying to get someone to do something.

I imagine some people really liked it though? It seems like there's a subset of dieters who do well with very strict rules like that. Or at least, a big group of people who think they want very strict rules like that, but probably will not be successful with them.

I think a subset does exist. But I'd argue that it only works for them acutely. They love being told what to do. They don't want to have to think. After a while though, the staleness will override consistency. Which is why I stopped doing it.
