Can I do this to make my life more 'active'?

I'm currently looking for a job with no success and presently I'm working with the family business, so I'm at the desk all day and when I'm not checking mail or phone messages I'm idly surfing the web. I'm aware how detrimental to over-all health a 'sit-down' lifestyle is and, it's embarrassing to admit but, I've been doing it for roughly 9 - 10 years.

I started MFP about a week ago and I'm starting to eat healthier, monitoring my calories and taking walks in the evenings along with going to the gym. I don't go out much (I'm not an outdoors kind of person) but I want to trick my body into thinking that it's active so I'm not sure what else to do. I was thinking that maybe every hour or so, get up from the computer and do a 5 minute routine (I've got some 7 lb weights, a skipping rope and a resistance band). Is that a good idea or would it be too much of a good thing? Could I wear out my body that way?
