What was your postpartum (early) weight-loss like?

Today, I weighed myself for the first time since giving birth. I only lost 16 lbs in these first 19 days. I'm a wee bit disappointed as baby was 7lbs11oz and then there's the uterus, placenta, water, etc. I suspect these remaining 15 lbs are, in fact, fat!
What was your weight-loss like the first six weeks after giving birth?

I tend to lose 20 in the first six weeks PP. Then, for whatever reason, I gain 5 or more back at around 3 months. Those 5, plus anything else I gained in pregnancy, stick around until weaning.0

I gained 18 during pregnancy, and lost 28 by the time she was 3 weeks old...now I have 15 to get to my "goal" weight, and its not budging ....
She was 8lbs5oz, so she was a chunk...and I was really puffy and pumped full of fluids, so I bet most of that was water0 -

THIS exactly. I always always hate it when people tell me that BFing helps weight loss. Ya I'm on my third kid now and my weight doesn't budge at all unless I really really try until after I've weaned, then it just falls off! I'm still BFing now. I know that the weight that I had in spark people when I first decided that I had to lose the weight before I weaned was 162 and at the Drs office before delivering I was about 185 so I lost about 23 pounds. My FIL says that baby/water weight/placenta etc average weight loss is about 20 lbs on average.0 -

Well, I'm glad I'm not the only one. I"m always a teeny bit resentful of the moms that lose it all right away.0 -
So far I've lost only 19 of my 30, and I'm almost 5 weeks PP.
I too don't believe the BF hype! Everyone keeps telling me not to worry; however, I think extra work is required for those last few pounds, and in some cases Breastfeeding will actually cause you to retain a bit of extra weight for back-up....
Anyway, as soon as I get the clear to go I'll be back at the gym! I'm going kind of insane, as the weather here lately has not been to conducive to walking (snow!).
Good luck!!0 -
I figured the last 8 would take work since it would set me at my default non-exercising/not calorie counting weight. But I am bummed these other 7 didn't drop yet. All I hear about are women at pre-preg size just a couple weeks after birth. How?!?0

I went from 142 pre pregnancy to 174 the day I delivered. I'm exclusively breastfeeding and have been working out since 5 weeks or less pp. The scale has been stuck at 159-158. I count calories and workout and it's just not moving. I'm hoping that as long as I continue eating healthy and working out that eventually it will fall off. I too think that breastfeeding causes many women to hold on to some of the extra fat.0

Hi,
Pre - preg weight - 115
The day I gave birth - 145
2 weeks after delivery - 126lb
Then, I put on 10lb ( 136lb)
Today, I am 126lb...
11 lb from my pre-preg weight.
It was frustrating... I was working out and eating right and still put on weight...
Very hard for me...0 -
My baby was born on 10/18 and since then I have lost 27lbs.0
-
Pre-pregnancy - 155 (I'm 5' 9")
Weight at birth - 206 (10/24)
Weight 2 weeks later 1800 -
I'm four weeks postpartum I gained 44 pounds with my son.
I've lost 36 pounds so far, and I'm exclusively breastfeeding. I'm also pretty tall and imagine I was packing around a lot of extra fluid.
I think breastfeeding is working for me, I've got a big boy with a big appetite. I don't think my last 8 pounds will come off as easy, though. Oh well!0 -

+1
People used to tell me "oh you gained so little you'll lose it in no time". For both my girls I gained PP until I weaned, then dropped off fairly quickly.
Don't lose heart!!0 -
Count me in! I lost about 18 in the first week with both my kids, then gained back about 5 when my milk established. I hold fiercely on to my last 10 pounds until weaning, then it falls off. It's sort of annoying. I try so hard to lose that last 10, then baby turns 1 and presto change-o, the last 10 is gone!0

I put on 27kgs with both boys which is 60 pounds EEK
Gave birth with my first lost 15kgs about 30 pounds and then had 12 kgs to lose which was all fat - took me a about 9 months to recover.
2nd time around has been really tough.....has taken me nearly 16 months to get there and on a 1200 cal diet for the past 3 months training 6 days a week!
My motto....never again0 -
I'm three weeks post party's right now and I only lost 10 of the 45 I gained.. Very disappointed about this.0
-
I was 155 - 200lbs this time around (208 first time). 12 days PP I'm down at 181
With my son I was able to go down to 162 without exercising much and not really watching what I ate.
I went with Weight Watchers and went down to 135lbs but of course when I stopped I went up to 155lbs.0 -
I lost 22 pounds the First couple of weeks , i did not go on a diet untill i stopped BF at 5 months old, now I am 10 months PP and I only have 21 pounds left of a 60 pound gain with Baby, so I think it just depends on the person. Baby was 7 pounds 12.6 oz
Good luck0 -

I am already up 26kg , which is 68 lb and I am only 35 weeks along. I am. Very disappointed in my weigh gain, and I do not really understand it. I eat only 200 calories above my BMR , so I should have gained less then 1/4 of this weight . I hope I can lose it again like you after the ban comes0 -
I am two weeks postpartum and so far I have lost 27 of the 33 pounds that I gained during pregnancy.0

Pre-pregnancy weight 154
Weight day baby was born 178
Day after 171
6 days PP 164 (and in my pre-preg jeans)
10 weeks post-partum 152
I have been tracking calories and did run a 10 mile race at 7 weeks PP, started running regularly 2 weeks PP, and at 6 weeks PP started a lifting routine. A bit crazy, but it seems to be working (and I have very easy deliveries with no complications). Goal weight is 140-145, so I still have some work to do. As this was my 3rd and last baby I just want to drop the weight and get my body back as soon as possible. I aimed for 1900 net cals until 9 weeks PP, now aim for 1600 net cals (had to drop it as my weight plateaued for almost 2 weeks!) and I have not had any problems with supply for breastfeeding.0 -
Hi there just saw your post
pre prego 132
day of birth 202
70 lbs!!!!!!!!
Day got home from hos i had lost 15lbs
then another 15lbs in the next month then up until now 13 lbs
I still have 27 to go. Im pumping still so will see what happens after i stop0 -
Pre pregnancy weight - 168lbs
Day baby was born - 201lbs
2 weeks pp - 168lbs
Goal weight - 150lbs
I've stayed at 168 for the last 7 weeks. I don't fit into my pre preg clothes yet, because my fat % is way higher than it was. But I'm working out consistently again now and hoping that will change. I've lost 2 inches from both my waist and hips these last 2 weeks, so progress is happening, even if its not on the scale.
I have quite a few friends who get scary skinny breastfeeding, but I think I'm one of those body types that will hold onto some extra fat just in case.0 -
I've lost 33lbs10 days PP, but I also gained around 60. When I came home from the hospital it was only 13, but then obvsiously lost a lot more water weight.0
-
I lost 16 lbs 12 weeks after without trying, but gained 4 lbs when I went back to work. That darn snack machine! But since I started MFP now am down 2 lbs. But I'll take those 2 lbs with a big 'ol smile on my face!0

My "happy" weight is 120. I was 127 when I got pregnant (we conceived the day after Christmas- holiday weight gain!). I was 155 when I delivered. (28 lbs gained). I am now 10 weeks post c-section and have lost 27 of those lbs through diet and breastfeeding. The first 20 came off quickly in five weeks, and then it's been a steady clip of 1-1.5lb a week if I stick to my diet of 1500 cals a day.
I just got cleared to exercise last week, so now I'm doing light treadmill runs and weights daily. It was a little terrifying to start again- I was on bedrest my last trimester so while I didn't gain much weight, I certainly hadn't had any exercise in ages!
I'd say wait until you're 6-8 weeks before you take a true assessment of where you are. Your hormones are all wonky those first few months! Also, if you're breastfeeding, your breasts certainly weigh a few lbs. I went from a small B cup to a heavy D cup thanks to the little guy's appetite, and I know those weigh a few pounds! And besides, 15 lbs to lose is not bad at all- you made a person, after all!0 -
2nd child, pre-pregnancy weight 155, when I delivered I was about 196. The weight took longer to come off the second time around. (baby was 8lbs 4 oz - I weight pretty much the same after giving birth as I did before...) At about 5 weeks post I found that my body was done losing weight naturally on its own. I was at 168 at 5 weeks post. I started counting calories at that point and then at 6 weeks post I started going to the gym doing light exercise about every other day. Today I am at 158 (10 weeks post - 10lbs in 5 weeks). I did not breast feed. I have another 18lbs to go to be at my goal weight. Don't stress, everyone's bodies take a different amount of time to adjust.0

Same story as many others. I gained 37 during pregnancy. I lost 22 almost without effort in the first month. Then I was stuck, gaining 2 losing 2 for 7 months. leaving me 15 pounds to lose. No matter how much I worked out, what I ate... nothing helped.
Then I stopped breast-feeding. 5 pounds dropped of within the first month and I've been steadily losing about a pound ever 2 weeks since then.
I'm not doing anything different, same work-out patterns, same food, it's just coming off now since I've stopped breast-feeding.
I agree with others, anyone who says breast-feeding helps you lose weight is making a blanket statement that certainly does not apply in every case. It should start going away once you wean though, don't lose hope!!0 -

Now with baby #2 on the way, I fear that will happen again. Since the this pregnancy is totally different from the first, I hope I have a totally differ breastfeeding weight loss as well. Well, finger crossed.0 -
I am 12 days PP and down 26 pounds- been losing about a pound a day- hope it keeps up because I got a long ways to go! I want to be 155/160 by June 1.0

Starting weight= 135 pounds
Goal Weight Gain = 25-30 pounds maximum
Actual Weight Gain= 45 pounds
New Goal Weight= 130 lbs (5 lbs lower than starting weight)
On Due date= 180 pounds
1 month PP= 152 pounds
2 months PP= 140 pounds
Miss Jacqueline was born 7lb 3oz on October 16 (so 8 weeks ago to the day). Took about 10 days for all the swelling in my limbs to go down, but I think I was still holding on to some water weight for about the first month since the weight came off pretty consistently on it's own. I got stuck at about 150 pounds 3 weeks ago, or at least it felt like it, so I started working out as soon as possible. BREAST FEEDING really helps, this is like exercising, you burn upwards of 500 extra calories a day producing milk. I've also been eating better.
On the other hand, I was a surrogate, so I'm pumping milk and don't have the responsibility and time consumption that goes along with having a newborn. You mom's are incredible. You just went through something so awesome and I know it's hard to find the time to work out and eat well, but kudos for all those of you who are trying.0
