Have I gone Hyper??

I have been Hypo since 2006. Prior to losing any weight we had my dosage at a good level and I was feeling really good. I finally didn't feel like I wanted to sleep my life away, I was feeling depressed but not on any meds for that and the only thing hindering me was my weight. My SW was 284, I'm 37, 5'6". I'm on 125 mcg of Levothyroxine and I have been on that dosage for about 9 months or so. Now I have gone and lost 35 pounds and strange things are happening. I was at the doc two weeks ago and she told me my numbers were getting close to hyper, but we both agreed to to wait two more months. I will go back in January and get checked again and probably lower dosage at that time.

I told her my hair is falling out like no tomorrow. Almost to the point that it is getting really thin on the top of my head, but I always wear a pony tail so it's not noticeable.

I told her my TOMS are all messed up. I totally skipped one in June, July made up for lost time and I felt like I was going to bleed to death. She told me that is normal and I probably didn't ovulate that month so I just didn't have one. Now I have been spotting for the last 10 days. I used to be very regular and predictable. This is very strange and annoying.

I'm tired, like I'm not sleeping. I don't notice that I'm waking up, but I wake up in the morning feeling like I only got 4 hours of sleep, not 7.

I have lost 4 pounds in the last week and I haven't changed anything. That alone is enough to leave it alone and not do anything about it. If you look up the symptoms of Hyper there are almost the same as Hypo so that is no help. Is there something else I should be looking for?

Could really use some opinions on this. If it's not a big deal then I won't worry about it. But I know that being Hyper is worse then being Hypo as far as health wise, so I'm concerned. I am also the type of person that analyze everything and since she told me I was close, now I'm looking for symptoms. When in reality all of these symptoms could also be because I have lost weight.

What do you think?

Congratulations on losing 35 pounds! That's significant! It is believable that you're dosage would need to go down based on the weight loss, but if you were just checked 2 weeks ago, I wouldn't suspect that all of those symptoms are based on your weight loss if they were just normal 2 weeks ago and you've had these symptoms for months.

Now, of course I'm not a doctor, but it could also be that your weight loss is causing some of the symptoms. How quickly did you lose those 35 pounds?

When I hear someone is having problems with their time of the month two things instantly come to mind: Too much exercise and/or not enough calories. Both can cause havoc on your time of the month. I took a quick look back through you're diary, and if it is accurate, I would say you can stand to eat a few more calories. I'm also 5'6 and shoot for at least 1400 net calories a day, but if I eat 200 more calories a day then I'm fine as long as it isn't a habit. I also eat back most of my exercise calories. Since you have more weight to lose, you have more wiggle room with your calories until you get closer to your goal. based on your diary, there are some days you aren't even netting 1000 calories.

Edit: Your weight may not come off as quickly this way, but you may feel loads better!

I forgot to mention that in my original post, I'm sorry. I was eating only around 1200 cals a day and just last week, bumped up to 1400. I was having some energy problems while exercising and found I wasn't eating enough. I feel better now at 1400. I exercise an hour a day. Mostly walking, but have started running now and lifting light weights. I do exercise daily. It has made a huge difference on how I feel. I'm more energized and alert and I don't feel depressed anymore.

My doc told me yesterday that I may need to switch to non generic. Depending on the pharmacy, there are around 15-17 dif types of generic out there. So you may need to change the type of medicine you get. My numbers are not where they need to be but I cant test again until January/February because of my bronchitis.

Hopefully things work out for you.

Keep us/me posted. I am dealing with the same things somewhat (unsure thanks to sicknes tho)

Hi :flowerforyou: Congrats on the weight loss!

I swung close to hyper once, and what it did to me was give me "night sweats"
I also kept getting really hot & then really cold, back & forth... the heat was unbearable... THAT is a symptom of hyper.

Once I switched from synthetic thyroid to Natural Thyroid, I was perfect!

Have you checked out the site stopthethyroidmadness ? It is so important to read up on it, because Dr's really don't normally treat you for symptoms & then you walk around losing hair, feeling horrible.

My guess? I'd say you're probably suffering from lack of T3 and/or adrenal fatigue.

I was subclinical hyper for years, but never had any issues like what you're describing, until I had my gland removed. I can really only comment on the hair loss. While it is a symptom of thyroid issues, it's also a side effect of the medicine itself, but supposed to calm down after a while. You might have your dr test your iron levels, including ferritin. Mine are always low...and some days I feel like Donald Trump when I put my hand on top of my head. I take an iron supplement, biotin and evening primrose oil to try to slow down the loss.

I had a too high dosage once. My heart felt like it was beating faster and my digestive system was running faster. I would think irregular periods and hair issues would point more to PCOS, but I wouldn't know for sure. If you otherwise feel ok, I wouldn't worry much, but if you start feeling weird I would look into it more.
  • i was hyper..(graves disease) i always worry about being hypo! only way to know is to get your numbers checked.

I was diagnosed with Graves disease so I was on meds for a long time to control hyper-thyroid but did a lot of yo-yo-ing from hypo to hyper. I tend to know which way I'm heading because of my symptoms. Last year I had radio-active idodine therapy which destroyed most of my thyroid and I'm now hypo.

Your symptoms sound hyper to me. Any idea of what your resting heart rate is and/or was? If it's higher than it has been, that's a symptom of hyper and part of the reason you may feel like you aren't sleeping as well - elevated heart rate can leave you feeling tired but not sleepy, you may not have as much energy to exercise but feel kind of jittery. The weird part about symptoms for hyper and hypo are that they can be the same for both - I tended to lose hair when I went hypo but not necessarily hyper. Messed up TOMS can be both as well. Getting to know what your sypmptoms as they correlate to hyper-hypo can help you figure out when you need meds adjusted.

In speaking with my doctor about my thyroid meds and weight loss, he said that it's likely that med levels will need to be adjusted as I continue to lose weight. So, you may just be at a point in your weight loss journey that you need to reduce the level of hormone that you are on - which is great! The symptoms suck but it's good that you are noticing them and paying attention to your body. I'd go and get your levels checked!! Hyper sounds like it would be great (aka "easier" to lose weight) but you feel crappy and it won't help your journey in the long run - took me 5 years to figure that out. Good luck!

    Hi there-

So sorry to hear you are going through all this! I was diagnosed with Graves disease/hyperthyroid about a month ago. My symptoms started way before that though and they mirror your symptoms. I hope your doctor will regulate you medication so that you can start feeling better again!

The only way to know if you've swung hyper is by getting free T3 and free T4 levels tested.

In people supplementing with thyroid hormone, their TSH can often be at the bottom end of the "normal" range (which is a range up for intense debate), or even well below it. As TSH is not a thyroid hormone it just isn't a good way of measuring actual thyroid function.

Many symptoms of hypo and hyper can be quite similar (interupted sleep, hair loss, heart palps weight loss/gain, etc) so it's really important to get regular labs, and keep track of them.

Are you on a synthetic T4-only supplement like Synthroid or Levothyroxine?

The same thing is happening to me as well. Hypo for forever ( I have been on the same dose for over 10 years.) and now Hyper. I have Hashimoto's & PCOS. I have also lost 50 pounds and am eating a more healthy diet. My meds have been reduced twice now. Checking every two months. I too, had acute hair loss, but otherwise didn't realize anything else was wrong. I always have aches, sleep and digestion issues and my monthly cycle is now a crap shoot . It is so easy to just excuse it all away, After all, I'm fat , unfit , aging, eat poorly, etc. I will be happy to post as I learn more. Since this is autoimmune, I'm hoping that since I'm getting healthier, maybe my thyroid is too .
