Home-made Breads? Recipes to try?

Hello folks, I'm fairly new to Paleo eating (although I did something similar 15 years ago - just wasn't called paleo then!)

Anyway, the thing I missed most then was bread. Previously, I bought some breads that were rice based, but I gather that wouldn't do for Paleo anyway.... and I didn't think much of them, although the satisfied a need at the time.

I have been making my own sourdough breads for the last few months - of course these are all wheat based - and even if I use Spelt flour they won't be Paleo no matter how many lovely seeds I add!

So does anyone know of any nice sites that have instructions for attempting to make Paleo friendly breads?

And a UK source of nice Paleo friendly flours?

Thanks in anticipation! :)

If you're fine with Protein powder...

Though, ideally, bread should not still be on your menu. You're supposed to be eating whole, real foods - not supplementing your old CW ones. IMO.

That looks great! However whey is milk based and I'm supposed to avoid dairy.

Basically, I'm not aiming for the Paleo "ideal" in the sense of excluding any cooking techniques, rather I'm aiming to exclude certain food types.... Wheat and dairy for starters, but probably all grains ultimately.

Anyway that recipe has given me some good ideas as a start for some experimentation! Thank you for sharing it.

You could try egg white protein powder, if you can get your hands on the stuff. Rice protein powder works - and yes, s considered Paleo by some, myself included. Hell, there's even beef protein powder - haven't tried that yet, but want to.

FreeTheAnimal has his "fat bread" of which you could certainly try. There's also a range of "gluten free" breads in supermarkets, I don't like them though, 'cause they taste like *kitten*.
Never understood the whole bread craving thing. When I was diagnosed as coeliac, the last thing I cared about was bread - it's bland, boring and tasteless. Giving it (and the foul tasting GF bread) was easy for me... For you, I recommend keeping consumption of it in moderation. There isn't really a Paleo friendly bread; it's kind of a contradiction, and it's best to kick the cravings.

...portobello mushrooms are tastier, anyway. :D

Check Elana's pantry on the web, I think she has a good recipe using almond butter etc. No milk or other 'forbidden' substances involved. But I generally agree on not 'having sex with your pants on' and recreating foods like bread... the paleo friendly versions usually turn out to be very calorie heavy..

Thanks folks..... will let you know if I find something I like. I don't actually eat that much bread as it is - but I do like to bake!

    Will have to be inventive!

Then possible bake and donate it to the homeless shelter. I know it's hard to cook and not taste your goods but it's always a thought.

Check out www.againstallgrain.com She has some bread recipes that I haven't tried yet, but people rave about! She uses nut and coconut flours. I've tried some of her non-bread recipes and she really knows her way around a grain-free kitchen

I omit the agave and stevia in them. The banana one is delish- I add a little cinnamon and eat with Sunbutter,.

    I will second elanaspantry.com!

I made her paleo bread to use in place of regular bread and cornbread in our thanksgiving stuffing this year, and my family seemed to enjoy it (none of them are primal or paleo). It sliced nicely, had a dense texture and a slightly sweet flavor. It was pretty tasty with a smear of almond butter for a treat! I imagine it would make a nice sandwich if you don't mind the extra calories, though you'd probably have to double the recipe to get sandwich-sized bread.

I tried this recipe made out of almonds and eggs...it is actually really good and I don't really like almonds. It is really easy, and it hold up well to cutting and toasting.

Found another recipe that I tried this morning.... bread texture and quite pleasant, but a little goes a long way. I ate 1/4 of recipe with cherry tomatoes for breakfast.

    Flaxseed Microwave "Bread"

    1/2 cup ground flax seed
1 tbsp of oil of choice or melted butter
    1 egg
    1 tsp baking powder.
    Salt to taste if desired

Mix baking powder, flaxseed & oil, beat egg and add & mix.
Put in bowl and cook in micowave for 1 min
Tip out and allow to cool before slicing.
    Total recipe = 400cals

I made this the other day, i put it in muffin tins instead of loaf pans, but it's pretty "bread" like, almost a cross between bread and cake. very tasty. (i added 4 tbsp of cocoa ;) )

I made this one last night and it was great! Nice moist texture. I'm actually surprised at at "bread" like it came out. It wasn't actually anymore banana flavored than a regular one surprisingly enough. My bananas might not have been ripe enough though.
