Can't stomach the taste of coconut oil/milk

Hola!!

I'm pretty new the Paleo (as of Sunday) and have been venturing into a world of cooking real food and I have to admit, it's pretty spectacular. Everything that I have made so far has been DELICIOUS! With the exception of the chicken/veggies I made on Sunday (first Paleo dinner). I used coconut oil instead of olive oil. It literally took me an hour to eat my dinner as I couldn't really stomach the taste of the coconut oil. Is this something that you find you get accustomed to? I've been using grass fed butter and oil for every meal since. I had coconut milk and water before and didn't enjoy either of those either. Are olive oil and grass fed butter good alternatives??

I don't notice any difference when I cook with Coconut oil (I use the Trader Joe brand) vs Olive Oil...but I use a lot of different spices.

If you don't like the taste use olive oil or grassfed butter instead.

I will say with coconut milk and coconut water you may have to try a few different brands - there are some I hate and some i love

I use coconut oil for EVERYTHING now. I like the taste of it on food, but not alone. I use Nutiva or Spectrum Extra Virgin Organic, How much are you using in place of butter/oil? I put about a tablespoon in with meats and a little less in to fry veggies. I don't use any on things like steamed veggies, I just enjoy the veggies on their own.
I dont drink any kind of milk *ew* but I use Thai Kitchen full fat coconut milk in my cooking.

my daughter hates anything coconut and she sometimes detects it, but for most things she does not. If I hated it I would probably just stick with ghee or olive oil. Also try experimenting with brands to find a mild tasting one.

Is it the coconut flavor that's turning you off? Unrefined coconut oil has a stronger coconut oil flavor than refined. I use refined for cooking and I honestly don't taste it. For the nutrients I use unrefined to add to my tea or just to eat straight out of the jar.... more coconut flavor.

I'm with you on the coconut oil. For a long time I wondered what everyone was on about with coconut oil (even the organic stuff) and how great it was because it was all I could taste in my food and the kitchen stunk of it. I've since found RBD coconut oil (refined, bleached, deodorised) which is certified organic under a strict organic certification authority I trust. I can't taste it all in my cooking and food tastes lighter and 'cleaner' when cooked with it.
Not sure what you define as coconut milk where you are (seems to differ based on where in the world you are) but the stuff I use is coconut cream - really thick, almost solid. I've experimented with different brands - some taste like bleach (??), some like pure coconut, others like the tin can they came in. I live in New Zealand so no use recommending a brand - hopefully someone closer to you can do that. Failing all of that then use butter - it's still a good fat and there's no hard and fast rule that you must use coconut products. Do what makes it enjoyable for you :-)

Coconut Oil - Trader Joes and Dr.Bronners - I like Dr. Bronners a little bit better but a jar of TJ is $6 vs $10 for Dr. Bronners

Coconut Water - My favorite is Harvest Bay - it can be hard for me to find sometimes - but they come in a smaller 35 calorie tetrapack whcih I find is a good size when I want a little something sweet (I only drink water, coffee and tea so to me coconut water is like having a Soda) I also like Blue Monkey, it tends to be a little sweeter - it comes in cans so when I open one I need to drink in all in one sitting

I would check and make sure the brand you are using hasn't been refined and hydrogenated to the point the oils are more harmful then helpful. You need to check and make sure they haven't adjusted it but so much and destroyed the MCFA - most of the time the MCFA are retained but you loose a lot of the other good stuff that is found in virgin pressed coconut oil. Also by refining it there could be the use of chemicals to extract the oils since RBD is extracted from a dry state. If it is certified organic it doesn't mean that there wasn't chemicals used to make the oil or that it contains the same nutirents and oil benefits as virgin pressed coconut oil - but rather the begining origins of the coconut plant was organic...

Sort of like going to the farmers market and buying fresh organic broccili and then smothering it with margerine and velvetta cheese and saying its good for you because it's organic.

Not saying every brand of RBD coconut oil will use chemicals for extraction or strip the oil of the good fats - you would need to research the brand you use and see how they process it.

If you don't like coconut oil and can't find a RBD that works for you I would stick with butter and olive oil to cook with - if you want the MCFA benefits you can always purchase MCFA in a drop form to add to foods and drinks

If you want to use coconut oil for the health benefits you could switch to refined coconut oil or red palm oil (I'm not sure what that tastes like but I hear it doesn't have a coconut taste).

I don't really notice a difference? I am the opposite, I find olive oil too heavy now, I find coconut light and not too much flavor.

I don't much care for the coconut flavor either. I had the Jarrow brand for a while, and it was way too coconutty. I switched to Spectrum, and I haven't had a problem.

I bought some coconut oil a few years ago (prior to this diet) and it always tasted 'soapy' to me. I threw most of it out. I suspect now that it may have been stale if not rancid. I use coconut milk/oil now and enjoy it very much.

There are several oils I use now in my cooking - mostly, it depends on which one goes best with the recipe. Coconut oil, olive oil, GF butter, goatmilk butter, bacon fat, macadamia oil and avocado oil are all used in my kitchen. Just make sure they are good quality, fresh, and don't use a low-smokepoint oil for frying.

I have 2 kinds of coconut oil. One is unflavored for dishes I don't want the coconut flavor in. That brand is Spectrum. The label says Expeller Pressed Organic Coconut Oil Refined For Medium to High Heat. It's in a jar.

I have mixed feelings about coconut oil too. When I started on Primal I had to force Coconut Water down, but I've really grown to like it. Zico Pure Premium is my favorite - it isn't as sweet and flavorful as some of the others. Still not a big fan if the flavor of the oil in my meats and veggies, but try to put 1-2 Tbsp in the crockpot with my soups and stews and I can't even taste it!

Thanks for all of the advice! I saw the Spectrum brand at my local health food store last night so I will go pick this up the next time I go shopping!
