If I had my way, I would name my baby...

Let's have a little fun

If you had your way, and your spouse/SO either had no say or simply was ok with whatever you chose, what would you name your baby? This counts for children who are already named and/or hypothetical children (e.g., you are pregnant with a girl, but if you were having a boy, you'd choose X as his name).

Ready? Go!

It took the entire pregnancy (DH finally agreed the day before my due date) but I got my way with our selection for a girl name, Rose. We chose a boy name quickly, but girl names were a tough battle. I think DH finally realized after going through a list of 1000 names (really!) and my list still only consisted of "Rose" that I was 100% serious and not backing down. I got my middle name choice, too, but he agreed that the other options didn't fit as well (late grandmothers' names). I owe him big time, I may have to let him have control over the girl name choice with our next baby. :ohwell:

If I had my absolute druthers, I'd name my son Ezekial Gordon Rosenthal and call him Zeke.

I've always loved the name Ezekial and Gordon would be after my grandfather. I told my husband how much I loved the name a long time ago, but he flat out stated there was no way he was considering it, so I got it out by naming a pet turtle Zeke. :-)

Gordon will most likely be our son's middle name.

We are still, worryingly, undecided about his first.

I know this is horrible but if I have a boy I want to name him Beau. The reason why it is horrible is that when I mentioned it to my MIL, she told me in her ultra annoying voice, " Beau is a nick name.....not a real name"....she never even stopped to realize that my cousin Beau had just died in a tragic accident. Because of her comments, this kid might end up a Beau even if she is a girl! The woman irritates me to no end! The more she dislikes a name, the more I like it! Grrr!

I really want to name my baby girl Dora, but DH is vetoing it .
He wants to name her Lily. We are arguing about the names for months, and neither of us want to give in. I am exactly 1 month shy of my EDD and still no agreement on the name. Grrr..

I really wanted a traditional Roman name for my son (Julius, Marcus, Augustus, Antonius), because hubs and I are both big Roman history fans, but they were all shot down.

With my son I got my way I wanted to name him Justice (after a character on General Hospital, I know cheesy right). I wanted to name this little girl Grace but my SIL stole it and used it after I told her. She would have been Grace Kathryn. Then I wanted Charlotte Kathryn and hubby shot that down. He chose Jordan so I backed down and let him have his way since he was so easy going with our son's name but he did agree to Kathryn so she will be Jordan Kathryn.

aww our son's name is Marcus. When we didn't know the gender with the other two our boy choices were Lucian and Odysseus. Am not sure if they are Roman names. But it was somewhere along the lines of Greek and Latin.. If i remember

I can definitely relate to wanting to name the baby a name more ONLY bc the ole MIL was so adamantly against it. With my son I really wanted to name him Sawyer. My husband was all for it until his mom asked what we were thinking about for a baby name. She basically acted as though she had never heard a more hideous name in her whole life....OH well hubs and I ended up deciding on Bricen instead...Lesson learned!! The hubs and I have decided we didn't ask anyone about making a baby, so we're not going to give people the option of voicing an opinion. Our plan is to refrain from letting anyone in on what we're thinking of naming the baby; and after the baby arrives send a text/email with a picture and baby's name :)

We had a boy last time, but on my shortlist of girls' names was Katarina, which is close to yours (though I like Katalina, too). My husband neg'd it, so it was out. I also suggested Katrina, but then I thought with the the hurricane and all (not that we live in the affected area), it might not be a good idea.

    So cool!

I have a great-uncle named Julius on the Italian side of my family. He was always Uncle Jules but a neat guy. I really like him!

We considered the name briefly for our son because my husband had a great-uncle named Julian, too, but my sister named her older son Julian. We don't have the same last name, but we live really close to each other, so it could get confusing between Julian and Julius.

I like that idea, though. Will he go for a Roman name as a middle name?

I like Lucian or Lucius, too. Odysseus is Greek  We actually considered some of the characters from The Iliad and The Odyssey. I liked Penelope for a girl's name, but my husband didn't like it. Admittedly it sounds funny with our last name.

We agreed on names right away. But if it weren't for my brother stealing it I would have liked to name a son Graydon (Grandpa's middle name)

I love our girls name Zulma (his late mother's name) Eileen (my mom's middle name) i love that both names have meaning for us and I think that Zummie is a cute nickname

I really think that's the way to go - just keep it between the two of you until the baby is born. Only a real a-hole is going to pick on a baby's name after s/he has already been born.

With our son we didn't know what we were having, so we had a shortlist for both sexes, and we chose a name for him after he was born. That is what we'll be doing this time, too. My annoying-as-hell MIL has already badgered us about names even though we told her we were doing things the same as last time, but I think part of her expectation that she will be "let in" on it is because my BIL and SIL (MIL's son and DIL) named their daughter even before they had it confirmed that they were having a girl. They were convinced she would be a girl, so they had her name ready to go. They literally monogrammed clothing well before she was born, and their thank you notes from their shower were on "the baby's" stationery. (Because stationery is high up on everyone's list of must-have baby items. ) However, it's a running theme in my relationship with my MIL that she fails to recognize that I am not the same as my other SILs. I get along well with them, yes, but that doesn't mean we're all alike and do things the same way. Just like I have friends who are (gasp!) not exactly like me!

    /rant

Anyway, good for you on keeping quiet. Opinions are like a**holes, everyone's got one, which is why we never shared our shortlist with anyone. I think sharing is fine, as long as the people with whom you're sharing are supportive.

The only person I did share with was a fellow law school alum (who lived thousands of miles away) when he mentioned that he and his wife were also expecting and needed some girl's name suggestions. I shared my girl's name shortlist, and it turned out that his other two girls' names were on it, so I wasn't much help!

Cute, especially because it has meaning to you!

My late grandmother's name was Hedwige, which is a Polish name, but her nickname was Hattie. It fit her really well, as she was this cute little petite thing her whole life and was the sweetest little old lady going  I wish I could somehow use Hattie without actually having to officially use Hedwige, you know? Maybe a middle name...

Then again, I'm probably having another boy, so I shouldn't worry!

I think Hattie could be a cute first name. Why not take a "full" name and just shorten it. My friends named their kid "Max," I say if you like the nickname but not the full name just ditch the full name!

Well, I just try to think if she ever was in a professional setting, Hattie doesn't sound very professional to me, and I'm not sure she'd want to go by Hedwige :ohwell: And supposedly that is the owl's name in Harry Potter, and I'd hate for others to make that connection all the time ("Oh, HED-wige, like the owl in Harry Potter!"). She may never have to be in a professional setting, which is fine, but I want her to have options

Jenny_Rose77 - Ezekial/Zeke is a great name! I have a cat named Simon, and when I named him almost 13 years ago I thought it was a dorky name I'd never want to use for a kid (I was 17 at the time). Now I love it for a boy but can't use it!

jenluvsushi - Sorry to hear about your MIL's comment. We chose my late aunt's name for our daughter's middle name, and had my late BFF's name chosen as a middle name if we had a boy. I rarely speak to MIL, but knowing her she probably asked DH why we chose our daughter's first and middle names because she was very vocal with name suggestions while I was pregnant.

redheadmommy - If you really love your name choice, don't give up! I, too, was worried about choosing names so late in the game, and we finally agreed (or, DH finally caved in) 4 days before our daughter was born.

RBX - "Then again, I'm probably having another boy, so I shouldn't worry!" - Everybody thought I was having a boy based on how I was carrying, and I was kind of convinced I was having a boy because of this (but secretly wanting a girl), and I had a girl!

RBX again - "Anyway, good for you on keeping quiet. Opinions are like a**holes, everyone's got one, which is why we never shared our shortlist with anyone. I think sharing is fine, as long as the people with whom you're sharing are supportive." - We didn't tell anybody our names because we didn't want opinions. ILs are the type who would say "Why that name, why not this one?" and give us a list to pick from (they did it to SIL). While my mom would know to bite her tongue if she didn't like a name, I know she also wouldn't hesitate to remind me for the 100th time that she loves the name Jack for a boy. During the last week of my pregnancy I caved and told one person which girl name I was gunning for (sales lady at Pier 1, so her opinion didn't matter!). I don't know if she liked my name or not, but she didn't miss a beat when saying she thought it was a great name, which is what people should do when you tell them your choice!

    Odysseus is absolutely Greek.

We settled on Bradley Ryan or Benjamin Ryan, which definitely goes with our very English last name better!

Of course I'm the one who searched names so I made a list of boy and girl names ( Jaxon being my first choice on the boy side) for the hubs to help me narrow down and he agreed with both my first picks! I'm glad it was that easy! Lol it was the second name I had for a girl that didnt go over so well. I adore the name Camryn...it is pretty gender neutral but hubs didn't like it for a girl because he has a male cousin with the same name (different spelling) which I totally get.

We actually chose our names pretty quick but not without a lot of fighitng. It seems like any name i really liked my boyfriend who someone with that name and he didnt want to use that name since he would think about that person...... This made our name list very short! lol. I had my heart set on Erich ( after my late grandfather) but since my boyfriends best friend is named Eric he vetoed that. We agreed upon Colton for the first name and I didnt back down on the middle name. Our son will have 2 middle names. My grandfathers ( Erich) and my last name ( Notch). The in laws are not thrilled about the two middle names but for me they are important. My dad only had girls so once i am married that last name will die with him. I am proud of my family and wanted to pass it on. So the long name of our baby boy will be Colton Erich Notch Francis! lol
