Hunger question

3 weeks paleo now, and loving it... I notice sometimes I am not hungry... like at all, even if its been like 4 hours... Is this something most of you experience... I used to believe in the "eat small meals every 2 hours", but now realize you don't need to. Do you just wait until you are hungry, even if its been a long time in between meals...

ps- I haven't been able to workout since I started due to an injury, and this is the first time in my life I have lost weight without spending an hour at least at the gym :) I can't wait to get back to crossfit next week! Love Paleo and crossfit!

That's what fat does for ya' - keeps you satisfied longer. I eat "breakfast" at about 9:00-9:30am and don't eat again until dinner time usually somewhere between 5:00 and 7:00pm.

Check this out (my all-around favorite article on the subject - logic overload for many): http://www.marksdailyapple.com/a-metabolic-paradigm-shift-fat-carbs-human-body-metabolism/#axzz2EyN639am

    Specifically this part:

"In fact, when you consider how ridiculously small the body’s glycogen reservoirs are, you understand that it would have been impossible for us to survive as a species if glucose were truly the 'preferred' fuel. The liver, the main back-up glycogen/glucose storage facility for the brain and other glucose-burning organs, can only store about 100 grams of glycogen. Less than a day’s worth. Your muscles can only hold another 350-500 grams, barely enough to run for 90 minutes at a reasonable clip, and that glycogen isn’t even available to provide fuel for the brain. Meanwhile, we have a virtually unlimited storage capacity for fat (like 100,000 grams or close to a million calories on some people)."

Yup, it's pretty normal. I went technically 23hrs without eating Tuesday (ate dinner at 7p Monday night, didn't eat until 6:20ish tues night)...wasn't hungry the entire time. I'm not saying to do that or anything and I didn't plan to do it lol, but it's freeing not feeling starved ever couple hours. I eat when I'm hungry and it works for me.

I've not only noticed that I'm not hungry as often, but when I am hungry, I only feel it in my stomach. I used to feel "hunger" with my whole body.

    Wow crazy...

now my question is do you find certain meals make you feel fuller longer? LIke the ones with more fat? I do find sometimes I am super hungry hours later and some never, and I always wonder why some and not others? Any insights?

You will get answers, no doubt. But here's my input:

    Relax. You're overthinking it.

I am only on day 5 and am still SUPER hungry and yes eating LOTS of fat. Will this subside? Thanks!

I've hear a lot of people say that they just aren't as hungry while Paleo, but that's not my experience. I feel about as hungry as I've always been, and I've been Paleo/Primal for almost four months. I just make sure I keep plenty of good snacks around.

so glad to hear this as I am VERY hungry. Do you count calories and do you eat more calories than when you did SAD? I am truly hoping my hunger levels out......or it will be a struggle for me to lose weight doing this. And while my primary goal is health, I do want to lose some weight too.

Is your diary open? Maybe we could see what you are eating?

It should subside. Are you making sure to eat plenty of protein also? Protein along with the fat should keep you satiated for quite a while. I make sure to pack in lots of veggies like broccoli or cauliflower, brussels sprouts, dark leafy greens -- they're tasty and filling, and personally keep me full longer

I still do count calories and I eat the same amount of calories I did on SAD. Are you counting your calories? You may not be eating enough.
