Am I the only one?

Waiting until this freezing cold weather lets up to start C25K? I started end of fall(bad time to start) and got through week one and felt great, then the incredibly cold weather came, and snow...etc etc.. So i decided to stop and wait until spring. I live out in the country so I have to drive to a park or something to run and I have three small children whom my husband lets play on the playgroung while I run. This weather is just to much, I am itching to get back out there and start running again.

it's a been a few years, but we've had quite a significant snowfall where I live. I'd one 2 out of the 3 workouts for week 2. It's simply too icy, for me as a novice) to go running. I've seen plenty of others out running. I'll be back out there though as soon as the streets are less icy.
if you're not comfortable running in the current weather, then don't. Start up again when you feel able0 -
I started Labor Day weekend. When it started getting dark early and started getting chilly, I thought about taking a break until the warmer wether came back. I got some cold weather running gear and changed my running spot from a great trail along the Charles River, to a 5k loop of sidewalk by my home. As long as the sidewalks are clear, I'll run outside down to about 30 degrees. I wear my long running tights with a heavy pait of track pants over them. I layer my tops - usually a long sleeved turtle neck made of wicking material as my base, with a long sleeved running shirt over that and a lightly quilted running jacket on top. The jacket has an inner pocket for my ipod with a feed for the head phones to keep everything inside and warm. I have an earband thing and a light running hat that also covers my ears. I have these great gloves that the tops of hte thumb and forefinger flip back so I can manage my iPod and the running app on my phone. They also have a fingerless glove layer. REI was having an awesome sale on cold weather athletic gear, so I stocked up. It is really amazing how warm I actually get layered up like that when running even when it is only 30 degrees. (It was 28F when I ran Monday. That was a little too cold. My poor nose just kept running and it was icky. The next week or so will be in single digits. I will be on the treadmill for the foreseeable future. :ohwell: )
I guess I am saying, you know what feels comfortable for you. Be smart for your local weather conditions. Frost bite, hypothermia or a slip & fall are not worth a run. Just don't let a litte cold scare you.0 -

gnarly weather is a different type of training condition all together, but if you are starting c25k, i would defer or delay starting it until the weather is agreeable, and not use a treadmill.
the great thing about c25k is the 'reward' you feel when you achieve various weeks and activities , and if you stay consistent with the program, you will gain more from it, so I would suggest you get yourself fitted out with the right type of running shoe and then get OUTDOORS when the weather has improved.
good luck!!0 -

Why do you suggest against using a treadmill? Just curious. I started outside (actually in the cold) - but at night when I can run it is simply too cold (8 degrees) and black ice has been a problem - so I moved indoors. I do HATE the treadmill, find the transition from running back to the brisk walk to be hard on the knees but not painfully so - but I will use it when I can. I don't want to keep pushing this off and blame the weather.0 -

I don't personally think running on a treadmill would resemble any sort of 5k race..plus running outdoors is more interesting, uplifting and throws more challenges at you to help you into becoming a more 'complete' runner. Sure, when there is no other option, a treadmill will do, but I think the benefits of running outdoors wherever possible far outweigh any training you can do on a treadmill alone.
if you are having issues with your knees, perhaps you need to get fitted for appropriate running shoes? if you already have them, I tend to stretch for as long as possible after my runs to help prevent injury...but no getting away from it, running can punish knees0 -
I live in New England and have completed C25K in the past (2011) before I hurt my knee and to gear up again (in Week 2 now.)
Cold weather is no excuse not to run/exercise. With the proper gear and layering you will be just fine outside. Any running shop can either hook you up or lead you to a place online that can.
No excuses, get out there and do it!0 -
