Hello my fellow quitters!
Today is my ONE MONTH mark of not smoking! I cant even start to tell you how accomplished I feel right now! But, at the same time I feel defeated! It's only been one month and I've already gained 8lbs! I dont think Ive change any of my eating habits either! I'm not subsituting snacks for cigs, if anything I think I've been eating better! What is wrong with me??!! I go to the gym 5 days a week for 1-2 hours a visit. I'm just not understanding this logic! Someone please help me understand this! Let me know if this has happen to you! And how to overcome this! HELP!

Well I've heard that nicotine actually affects metabolism rate, though I never really believed that it would affect it that drastically. I'm sorry you gaining weight, but could it be muscle weight perhaps, since you workout a decent amount? How do you FEEL and LOOK?

Also, I noticed you don't log on the weekends. If you're using your weekends as a break from your diet, use it wisely, as in most cases people's weekend eating habits tend to outdo all the hard work they did through the week. Luckily it's mostly water weight, but those few extra calories (and I tend to find that when I don't log, I underestimate my total intake, so those "few" might actually be "several hundred" calories) add up! I'm guilty for doing that as well, just because I tend to eat out more or cook with other people and I'm too lazy :frown: I'm trying to improve, and have been doing better, and it has made a difference. One thing I do at least, would be to log breakfast, lunch, and my day snacks, so then by dinner time (when I usually do my social eating), I know I have x amount left, and can sort of ball park it (but, might I add, I now know to overestimate  )

Would you say you're strict with keeping to your daily intake goals, or do you set your priority over the quality of food you consume rather than the numbers? I noticed your intake is erratic, day to day. Are you zigzagging? Do you pay attention to your macronutrients? I'm starting to realize that protein really does affect me, so although I keep track of carbohydrates and fats, protein is the priority. Going over in carbohydrates isn't really an issue (in fact it's better for me than being low) as long as they are coming from the right places - as well as fats...which, man, my fat intake is over my "goal" EVERY SINGLE DAY, but it's mostly coming from nuts and healthy oils. I don't even know why I bother to still track it  Maybe focusing on protein intake might work for you too.

Overall, be more consistent on tracking what you eat throughout the entire day (including the weekends!), and try your hardest to stick to your daily goals. If you go over, it's really not the end of the world - if you are still gaining weight, you at least have your diary as a resource to look at and study what you are and not getting in order to determine what might be the cause of your hindrance.

PS: Oh and I'm 1 month smoke free today too! Congrats! (to both of us!)

First, congrats on becoming a nonsmoker!!!!

Second, I agree with sscad about your loose logging. You don't log weekends, sometimes you are way under calories, sometimes you are way over...I bet if you are brutally honest with your logging 7 days a week- log every single thing, no exceptions, you will probably see what the issue is.

Day 12....congrats!!! I'm on day 5 today. 12 days is quite an accomplishment! :)

The fear of gaining weight has kept me from quitting for years! This time around I have been really careful to log everything I eat. I am making an effort to either take a brisk walk around the block, or do push ups to failure, or lunges and squats when I have an urge to eat when I 'shouldn't'... I've heard that a lot of times a craving to smoke feels like hunger.

If you recognize it for what it is, drink some water and move around a bit, it may help. I was STARVING last night and thought, 'Uh-oh...here come the munchies and quit smoking weight gain'....looked at the calendar and realized I'm PMS-ing. LOL I always feel crazy hungry the week before.

I haven't gained anything so far, I have my calories set at TDEE less 15% at 1800 per day. I eat what I want, but keep it in my numbers. If I go over, I don't stress about it and try to keep it under my maintenance level of 2100.

My goal is to not gain anything over the next few weeks while my body is adjusting. I usually fluctuate about a pound depending on water retention. I weigh myself every morning and log any new lows. A couple days ago, I had a new low of almost a half pound. So far so good, and time will tell the rest of it.

My advice is to make sure you log, the good, the bad and the ugly....it will help you keep track, determine if it's 'fat' gain or water weight, and help you see where you can make some substitutions for munchies.

    You can do this!!! :):):)

Hey guys, I am now routinely eating 3000 to even 4000 calories. I can't seem to stop! Am eating tons of protein, fiber, veg. I shouldn't be as hungry as I am. Have ginaed 10 lbs in less than a month :(

I'm working out, but have mechanical limitations (bad ankle & lower back): can't lift heavy enough, or do cardio long enough to make a dent in the calories.

Has anyone tried any kind of natural appetite suppressant? I'm now having 3-4 cups of coffee a day (up from my usual one), and it's not making a difference...

I've had the same problem with weight gain, I've gained 5 lbs in 3 1/2 weeks. I exercise 4-5 times a week and I'm not eating any differently. Nicotine does boost your metabolism but eventually your weight will go down. I've just started cutting down more on the amount of carbs I consume in a day. For me that seems to work and because I have hypothyroidism it's more difficult to lose weight even with medication.

Just hang in there, make some adjustments to what you eat and see what works for you.

10lbs is still better than black lungs

kids size apple/tangerines are good low cal snackables...plus i peel and chop them up to eat. Been drinking tea and coffee a lot more, think ive replaced cigs with that. Gonna just have to change it to green tea constantly :)

I made it a serious effort to replace smoking with a healthy addiction. I have been smoke-free for almost 2 months now. I expected to gain weight after smoking, even through all dieting and exercise. I have actually be able to drop a total of 9 poinds. I have hit a little snag in weight loss, but I am still losing inches so I am at least losing something.

    My secret....sticking to it mentally.

I was one of those people who ate whatever she wanted, when she wanted, and didn't think twice about it. I would eat an entire jar of salsa and a bag of chips and go about my day. I got down and dirty and focused on portion control, exercising, and making sure I stick to an alloted calorie intake.

I found that the 1200 calorie idea for someone recovering from nicotine addiction (because in reality that is what we are, recovering addicts) isn't ideal. We are already have a tendency to replace the cigarettes with food, so to create such a low deficit in calories is only setting one up for the possibility of binges. For me...I found the TDEE/BMR method to work a lot better. My calorie intake is much higher, I have a set amount of calories to intake each day, and I know that if I do go over those calories...as long as I am under my TDEE I still on track.

But none of that matters if you don't stick it in you mind to succeed. You have to replace "try" with "will". Set yourself goals, the same way you did with not smoking. Aim for 5 lbs, then another 5 lbs, then another. Just like how you did the one day smoke free, then the week, then the month.

I quit and lost 24 pounds! You are eating too few calories for someone who works out.Let MFP determine your caloric need and then stay over that amount.Your body will respond accordingly.

I gained 15 lbs total when I quit and I was exercising! Finally about 18 months into my quit, I really cracked down on the food (Alternate Day Dieting) and started lifting weights. That started my downward spiral. I read somewhere that it takes your body 18-24 months to re-adjust and I believe it!
