Foot pain

I completed W5D3 tonight. I felt great and had no problem finishing the 20 minute run. Yay!

But as soon as I slowed down to a walk, I felt an unusual pain in my right foot. It's hard for me to describe, but it's sort of below my ankle on the outside of my right foot. It hurts a little to walk on it. It's not a terrible pain, and I don't see any swelling or redness (1.5 hours post-run now), but it definitely does not feel right.

Should I be concerned about this? I am running in minimalist shoes (Merrells with vibram soles - they don't have toe pockets like the VFFs) on concrete, and I know this probably puts a lot of strain on my feet, so I don't want to overreact. I also don't want this to slow down my progress. I'm scheduled to start week 6 on Saturday. Should I just wait and see how I feel?

Is it on top of your foot or does it start on the bottom? If it's on top it sounds exactly like an injury I've had and it was caused by tying my shoelaces too tightly.

Top and side of the foot. What did you do for it, and how long did it take to go away?

Are the shoes too tight? And these shoes more for off roader, I'm not sure if it helps cushion well when you run on concrete. i find running on concrete is harder on my legs than on tarmac (on the road). In the meantime, massage your feet from ankle to toe, rubbing it down. it might be just that you've strained your muscles a little.

Way to go on finishing W5D3!!! Woohoo!! I'm doing mine today after work and I'm looking forward to it!!

I hope you haven't injured yourself!! I'd rest for a day or 2 and maybe you can ice it and some anti-inflammatory may help! I hope you'll be able to get back out there Sat for your start of week 6. If you rest and you run Saturday and the pain comes back, I'd definitely go to the doctor...it's better to fix it now before it has a chance to get worse!!

24 hours later, it still hurts quite a bit when I walk. I was limping around a little today. I definitely do not feel comfortable running on it. Off to the doctor I go! Sigh.

I had the same thing last spring, and it turned out that i had fractured my foot just by running!! I hope that's not what it is - but mine healed quickly once I had an actual diagnosis and took some time off. Now I'm back at it again! Good luck :)

Sorry to hear that, Lynn! I'm glad you caught it before it got worse.

I actually haven't gone to the doctor because my foot is feeling pretty good after a couple of days of no exercise. I'm able to walk on it with no pain, so I'm going to try going out for my run this morning. If the pain comes back, I'll make an appointment.

Oddly enough I have a pain in my right foot exactly as you describe. The pain to the right of my foot feels like someone is holding a hot poker/knife to my foot (that's the best way I can describe the pain) plus my ankle is sore. I can feel the pain even while in bed at night, so it's not just when I'm on my feet. I've had the pain for about 8 months and this is before I started running, so I don't believe it's got anything to do with my recently taking up running (about 5 weeks now). In fact, I believe it's because I wore flip flops for about 2 months around my house last summer (this is when the pain started).

I visited my doc this morning about it as I was worried running may exasperate the problem and I didn't want to end up with a really bad injury. Anyway, she told me I have a flat foot meaning my instep, or the arch of my foot is not supporting me as it should. She has suggested I visit an Orthopaedic specialists to get some inserts made for my shoes. These inserts will support my foot as I walk/run. I'll probably require two sets, one for my normal day shoes and my running shoes.

I hope this helps give you something to think about. See the link below for more info on this condition.
