I didn't want to put this on the open forums, but I am sure the title will draw a few people, haha.

My bf (unbeknownst to me) was keeping a can of bacon grease beneath the sink (???!!)

My dog ate the whole thing and now has gotten very sick :( I know we cook with it, in small doses, but does anyone know if it is dangerous if eaten in a large amount by a dog? I think he has gotten it all out though :( He was sooo sick and now he is stuck to me, you can tell he doesn't feel good. I love my dog so much I hate to see him feel so sick, I am a worrier.

I hope he will be ok :(

I would call a vet and ask them, they would be able to tell you for sure ...poor thing

I don't know about large amounts.... my dogs get a couple of spoonfuls on their food each day and love it.

Maybe because it wasn't refrigerated??? I wouldn't think bacon grease is that bad, but a big dose is a shock to the system, and especially if it was a little rancid.

Aren't you supposed to refrigerate bacon grease? I do. And I give it to the dog if it's been sitting in the fridge a while. :-)

I would call your vet just to be sure. You would hate to wake in the night with your dog really sick and have to take him to the emergency clinic. As for leaving bacon grease under the sink, that's where my Mum always kept it! LOL It was NEVER refrigerated. Let us know how he's doing!

He can develop pancreatitis from it. If it was recent, I would give him some hydrogen peroxide to make him puke, if it wasn't in the last hour, you should watch him close for the next week o so for any signs of stomach upset, like diarrhea or vomiting. If it lasts more than a day, you should definitely take him in. Dogs that are acclimated to eating large amounts of fat don't usually have trouble with it, but if he normally just eats dry kibble, it will probably make him sick.

Oh, he certainly lost most, if not all of it all over his bed :( He was feeling awful but now he is feeling better (seemingly) The vet was closed so at any time it is the emergency vet. I think the worst is over. This is the same dog that got on the counter when we were out of the room for less than 10 minutes and actually ate an entire rotisserie chicken!! Now I was really freaking out. It was also after hours.

Oh, I didn't know about the grease being there, I keep it in a glass jar in the fridge, I guess my bf has been putting his there like his mom used to do.

Our dog gets diarrhea and sometimes vomiting if she has too much fat - even those dry pig ears you can buy will give her the runs. It was probably just way to much fat and too little time, but I would definitely watch him closely for a while just to be sure!
