Successfully lost weight without exercise?

I just underwent two minor surgeries. Very minor, but I have two sets of stitches in my mid-section that could pretty easily tare. Doctor's orders: No exercising for at least one month. I can't jog, speed walk, or dance - and definitely no weight lifting.
This is scary for me because this year I've done a lot of exercise. While I do believe my low-carb diet had the biggest impact in my loss, mentally it's hard to believe I won't regain without exercise. I'll start walking and using an at-home spin bike in a month, but that'll be it most likely all fall.
I could really, REALLY use some words of encouragement or success stories from others who were out of commission for a time physically but able to maintain or keep losing thanks to keto/low carb. I've never lost weight (or even maintained my weight) without exercising, so just feeling really freaked out right now.

My wife lost 20 lbs (from 165 to 145) just through diet modification. Her only "exercise" was her normal daily activity: house, kids, cooking, chickens, dog, gardening. She has since added exercise in to her routine and has not changed her weight, but has changed her body composition.
Anyhow, if your goal is weight loss, LCHF/Keto/Paleo will work just fine.

Diet for weight loss, exercise for fitness. Totally different things girl!
Taubes has spoken a bit about exercise...

Basically - he has spoken out that exercise, if anything, can slow weight loss!
Stick closely to your LC diet during this time. But seriously, don't stress out because you aren't exercising. You will be FINE!0 -
HI there!
I'm losing weight now and I'm not doing any kind of physical activity. I have a sedentary desk job and when I get home I sit down and read a book. I'll get back to doing some activity later on to shape up but in the meantime low carb is working for me without exercise. This was not the case prior to cleaning my diet off most fattening carbs as Gary Taubes likes to call them.
You'll do fine. Exercise is to shape up in my viewpoint.0 -
yeah dont worry about it. I was in my final year of Uni on top of a full time job and having a young family. In a nutshell I did basically no real exercise and still went from an "obese" bmi to just a little less than the middle of normal in three months. As is said weight loss and fitness are very different things. There is a whole industry out there pushing the whole exercise for weight loss thing and its actually not true, or not effective at least.
This is how I look at it. If you go and do a half hour casual run you might burn 300 calories at a real push. Lets assume your somewhat keto adapted and are burning 50% fat for that energy (this is very generous its more like 20-30%) so 150 cals of fat. at 9 cals per gram thats 16-17g of fat! Not much! Ok its actually more complex than this as there is the benefit of burning up some glycogen which helps switching to fat burning mode generally etc etc but at a simple level exercise just doesn't shed fat all that much. Very hard long exercise (15km + runs) shreds good amounts glycogen which helps move the body into more of a fat burning mode for its general energy needs but we can and do get the same result from just not eating the carbs in the first place.0 -
I've lost 65 lbs. without exercising. Since I added exercise a month ago I have bounced up and down the same 3 pounds or so. I am actually considering giving up exercise for a while to help my weight loss.0

If you've been exercising all along it likely won't be an issue, especially if you are doing strength training for toning. But the benefits of cardiovasular exercise for weight loss is overrated.0 -
Just saw this MFP blog post that relates to this topic:

Last summer I lost 20lbs. The majority of it was diet modification, very low carbs, lots of veggies and small frequent meals. The last 5-10ish pounds I worked off at the gym because I was impatient, just expect slower results.0

Thanks all for the insight // reality check. I just read "Good Calories, Bad Calories" and that really helped explain a lot. I've also seen a good drop this week, so that's encouraging. Definitely out of my comfort zone, but in a good way; I think I've over-exercised in the past and earlier this year.0

well it's doable with a low carb diet to keep weight off but I'd be very surprised if your doctor wouldn't allow you to walk laps in the pool. It's a very safe exercise assuming the stitches have closed and its a surprising workout. you might ask him.0

I have two sets of really deep stitches. Doc say no baths, pools, etc. for at least a month.0

I suggest you do an Internet search to find some non-stressing ways to burn calories.

I'm down 102 lbs since joining mfp and 151 since starting the journey to a better me. I rarely have exercised outside of normal activity I'm so anti exercise sometimes that I say the only thing that might make me run is a zombie apocalypse lol . Weight loss is 95% in the kitchen, fitness is 95% in the gym so heal up, eat right and the weight should still continue to drop then when allowed medically can work on the toning. Good luck0

Most of my 33 lbs (most lost before joing MFP) was from LC lifestyle way of eating. It wasn't until I started to naturally gain energy from this lifestyle that I had great motivation to start getting lean.0

If you listen to the Dr like Phinney, Volek who research with thousands of patients, they say diet is the key not exercise in most of the cases. Your weight is decided in the kitchen, not gym. Get well and heal soon.0
