My name is Izzy, I am 22 years old and was diagnosed with diabetes type 2 in 2010, when I was 19 years old. I've been overweight my entire life, and my eating habits were always terrible. I was told the news by the doctor who I was doing my externship with (when I was in school for medical assisting) and when he told me I couldn't help but break down in front of him. His way of comforting me was telling me "well, you knew it was coming."
He was right. I did, but it was still hard to face.
My mom has diabetes. Her mom and dad had it, too. Now I am here, 3 years later and while my A1C levels have improved I still want better. I've gone from havig to take metformin 1000mg twice a day to now once a day. It might be a late start to weight loss but I'm doing it. I don't want to have to suffer the way my mom does with all the medication and insulin injections.
If you want support feel free to FR me

Hello and welcome!
I was diagnosed in May. I also broke down - worried that my teens would be angry. The doctor replied "Well, you ARE obese you know". Such kind words, like my weight never occured to me.
Since then, I've really turned things around through MFP and exercise. I've been able to reduce to 500mg Metformin total each day. Found a new supportive doctor. She advised me to go wheat-free for 30 days and see what happens. My bg dropped like a bomb. It's working for me. You'll find what works for you.
The great thing is, you can make lifetime changes at 22, rather than waiting until 50 like I did.
Best wishes!0 -
Hi there Izzy, nice to meet you.
Glad to here you've improved your A1C's and reduced your diabetes meds. That's very commendable.
I hope you have the same success and benefits using this program as I've enjoyed. MFP is a wonderful tool. And FREE too!
Good luck and good health!
