Eating recommended calorries, not losing weight

Hey all,

I'm a little frustrated this morning. I've been following Jillian's recommendations of a 1200 calorie diet, doing JMBR 6 days a week and also biking at an average speed to and from work 40 min a day. According to MFP, on average Monday to Friday I am burning about 450-500 calories and hen weekends around 250-300 with JMBR by itself. Well the scale shows I have not lost a pound since last Sunday. One possibility could be be because I worked out at 9pm last night so maybe my muscles are retaining water. That or this is just too few calories for my activity level and my body thinks it's starving. Do you all have any tips for me? Do you go by her recommended number of calories? It's really frustrating to work this hard and not see those numbers drop. My fiance thinks there must be a mistake because he can physically see the difference in my body.

Thanks in advance,
Heather

With my calories set to 1200 I have to eat back part of my exercise calories or I feel like I'm dying. Play with it a week to see what happens.

How much weight do you have to lose? I've heard on Jillian Michael's podcast that JMBR was designed for people with 50 or more pounds to lose. She had a call in that only needed to lose 10 or so pounds and Jillian recommend she eat 1,600 calories while doing JMBR.
  • I'd say 30-35lbs but I'm pretty toned for my weight so I may be able to get away with losing less than that. I'm thinking I may eat back my biking calories to around 1400/day. I think I'm stalling. This is making me more determined than ever to tweak the foods I'm eating and make sure nothing is making me retain water. This will happen :-)
Thanks for the tip about the broadcast with JM.
  • Thanks! I will for sure

Maybe your calorie burns are too high(if you are eating back calories) have you measured????? Maybe you lost inches...
  • I've been trying to eat back a max of 50-100 calories but it's possible the estimates are too high. I can tell I've lost inches just by how my clothes fit. I'm really trying to be conscientious about tracking everything this week. Just going to grit my teeth and make adjustments and put everything I can into each workout.

    Hi,
I have not been following the meal plans becasue I hate being locked in to specific diets. I have been eating roughly 1380-1500 a day and I am not really losing. BUT I am losing inches and I feel like I look slimmer. I am trying to focus on reducing body fat % and not what the scale says--it's hard though. I get a little bummed when I see that the scale is budging but I am sure I look better at this weight than I did at this weight before without working out. Does that make sense at all?

Thanks for sharing this! I was wondering about that. In the video she states that it's not about losnig 1-2 lbs a week but 5-6lbs a week...I just don't see how that is possible for someone like me.
This makes me feel better, knowing she said to eat more if you have less to lose.

Sometimes relying just on the scale is not a good enough gauge of progress. You need to measure and look for visible changes too. BF% is also a good gauge but it's tricky to do at home with calipers and scales are not so accurate.

There are lots of calculators online that can help you determine how many calories you should be eating depending on your goals, scooby's workshop seems to be a popular one:

and i can't recommend this group highly enough:

It proves you don't have to exist on a stupidly low amount of cals in order to lose weight!
