- I run.0 -
about me:
- I'm neandermagnon. That's what you get when you cross a cro-magnon with a neanderthal. Which is what most of the world's population is, although there's quite a few neandermagnosovans (i.e. H. sapiens, H. neanderthalensis and whatever the Denisovan hominid is (I'd say they're a subspecies of neanderthal but not enough is known about them to classify them as anything just yet)) I would also hazard a guess that there's the DNA of several other species of human in modern human DNA, including whatever Homo erectus in Asia (aka Java man) had evolved into by the time H. sapiens got to East Asia.
- a palaeoanthropology nerd (in case that wasn't already obvious)
- in terms of classical nerdy interests, I'm into LOTR, Star Wars, Star Trek (all the different varieties thereof), Harry Potter, and fantasy fiction and sci-fi in general, and I've written sci-fi occasionally. Also, my husband has the entire 1st edition set of AD&D and a huge bag of all the different kinds of dice, and we do play this occasionally, when our busy work schedules permit. Additionally, we plan to teach it to the kids Though next time I play it I want to adapt it so my character can be a neanderthal. My husband was into AD&D back in the 80s when he was a little boy.
- I lift heavy things, currently doing Stronglifts but seriously considering switching to Starting Strength
- I'm built like a very short brick *kitten* house (are we allowed to write swearwords in this group?) i.e. short, large framed and have a high lean body mass for my height. In fact my lean body mass is in the healthy BMI range for my height. (i.e. I'm 5'1", lean body mass somewhere around 102-106lb and the healthy range for my height is 100-132lb) most of this is genetic, I've added around 2-5lb LBM through eating at a surplus and doing Stronglifts. This is interesting from a palaeoanthropology point of view.
- I drink tea (Earl Grey, black, no sugar), and I like to watch the cricket or rugby on a Sunday afternoon, in true stereotypical Brit style
- I'm an expat living abroad and I miss the British countryside a lot and I even miss the British weather
- I have a palaeoanthropology blog called cave people and stuff: http://cavepeopleandstuff.wordpress.com/
- I write novels and I'm planning to write one set in the middle palaeolithic era
- I like all styles of music from classical to metal to everything else, and I listen to the very best of each style. Note: I don't consider teeny-bop or other highly commercialised, overly-marketed pop trash kind of stuff to be styles of music, more like noise pollution. I especially like fusions between styles, e.g. techno or metal versions of classical music. So long as it's done well, and not just someone superglueing it together with no thought for how it works artistically
- a very long time ago I played guitar and sang in a rock band
- I did a year at art school, then dropped out (yep I dropped out of art school lol, that was before doing my science degree though) and I'm particularly good at life drawing and portraits. This + being a palaeoanthropology nerd = me drawing lots of pictures of forensic reconstructions of other human species. I don't have many examples online, but here's a sketch on my blog of a Homo erectus crying: http://cavepeopleandstuff.files.wordpress.com/2013/05/homo-erectus-crying-high-contrast-2.jpg
- I have a 7 year old and a 3 year old. The three year old is currently throwing a tantrum, because she doesn't want a box, yet telling her to just give the box to her big sister didn't make her stop tantrumming.
- my kids are bilingual and go to Arabic medium schools, and I'm teaching them English, maths and science from the British national curriculum at home.
- my husband is multilingual, including knowing enough ancient Greek to translate Plato. He's an ancient history nerd, which fits in quite well with me being a palaeoanthropology nerd. We have conversations like discussion what modern populations are likely to have the most neanderthal genes, based on the last areas inhabited by neanderthals before they went extinct and the movements of European populations during mesolithic, neolithic and historical times. And he has more degrees than I have A-levels.
- my husband is originally from the USA but has lived in more countries than I've even been to, because his dad worked for the American Embassy. My husband did his GCSEs, A-levels and degrees in the UK, and is a naturalised Brit
- I used to play ice hockey and would love to again. I used to play in defence, usually left D.
- I've also done a range of different martial arts, including Judo (2nd Kyu), Karate, Kung Fu, Tai Chi and a few others (I only ever did gradings and competitions in Judo, the rest I didn't study for that long)
- I currently work as a private tutor and I mark IELTS exam papers
- I also dabble in freelance writing but haven't been very disciplined about it to earn much money from it (yet)
- I'm qualified as a science teacher (biology specialist) but don't currently teach any science although one of my tutees who's currently on holiday is doing iGCSE physics, for which I've had to do a ton of revision because it's been a while since I've taught physics or even thought much about Newtonian physics. (I have read quite a bit about relativity though, but that's not in the GCSE syllabus)
- I have lived in many different places and don't have a home town and I'm sick to death of facebook badgering me about completing my profile by inputting my home town, yet they don't have any option for "I don't have one" or "I'm a modern day nomad" or anything like that.
- My family are from London, and I'm genetically descended from Londoners with a little something else thrown in (maybe Spanish, Gypsy and/or Jewish) and I otherwise seem to be 100% English (though my mum's family look kind of Irish but it's hard to tell because the genetic origins of the people of the British Isles are very diverse) and if you go back quite a bit further than that, I'm pretty sure I have more neanderthal DNA than average, because if you get a list of derived neanderthal postcranial characteristics, I have quite a lot of them, and most of the rest I can't tell if I do or not without an MRI scan or similar. (Note I said postcranial... I have a vertical forehead, dome shaped cranium and pointy chin, although the back of my head may be a different story but I don't generally count it as it's kind of hard to objectively observe the back of your own head)
- due to living in many different places including outside the UK for the last 6 years, plus being married to an American, I've lost my London accent and speak some kind of weird mixture of dialects, and I tend to use Americanised vocabulary, but spoken in a British accent, just to confuse the hell out of everyone (no really, I can't help it, it's just how my accent comes out)
- I was born up north (i.e. the North of England) and learned to speak up north, and if I spend too much time with northerners, my accent goes northern, and I have no conscious control over this. People ask my why I'm speaking like a northerner, and I reply, in a northern accent "I'm not speaking like a northerner". I think my default accent is London, but I'm not absolutely sure about that.
- did I mention that I like to lift heavy things?
- I'm eccentric and proud of it :drinker: <-- drinking Earl Grey tea0 -

Yes, I agree you're awesome! You also reminded me of a few things I should have added to mine:
-Growing up I wanted to be an archaeologist, and still have a desire to go on an archaeological dig sometime
-I'm a soccer fan: A.S. Roma, New England Revolution, and the USMNT (United States Men's National Team, for those who don't know that terminology), and soccer is the only sport I follow.
-My undergraduate degrees are in Intercultural Studies, Trombone, and Piano. I also managed to pull off getting a German minor. I say "managed to pull off" getting it, because I only spent nine months total studying German. My Master's is in Education with a focus on English Language Learners, and I'm debating going on to get a PhD in Cultural Anthropology, but that's a little ways off...
-I have absolutely no idea what the hell I'm doing with my life
-I've spent more than a month in 8 places in the past 8 years, including Germany (two months), Austria (four months in Vienna), Italy (seven months in Rome), Korea (four months), and soon to be Russia. If I also count all the time I've spent visiting Poland, I'm up to over two months there, heh. I'm only fluent in English, which seems to surprise people, but I can read way too many languages...
-I've only been in one relationship in my 30 years, and it was only for 2.5 years.0 -
