Worrying about all the minor details

I see a lot of concerns on MFP (and all of the intertubes) about the minor details
How many sets of curls should I do in the squat rack?
Should I do 5x5 or SS?
Should I do a 3 day split or a 4 day split?
Should I have 55% protein or 45%?
Should I *kitten* pre or post workout?
This seems pretty unimportant especially among newcomers
I think the time and effort spent trying to plan these minor details could be better spent just doing
I see bros make great progress without worrying about any of these details because they spent more effort just getting it done.

So much truth.
Focusing on minor details creates inaction. I am guilty of this. Less and less over time, but in the past I could get stuck weighing the pros and cons of an insignificant decision. Over time, I've learned to JUST DO SOMETHING, ANTHING! Minor details are for people who have all but reached their goals and are tweaking their diet and exercise plan to get down to their lowest body fat. NOT for people (like me) who have 20, 50, 100+ lbs to lose.

The details matter. Eventually. I stopped progressing on Starting Strength doing full body workouts 3x a week likemthe book, says. Very frustrating. Then I dug into the details of ME. Turns out I am not a gifted 47 yo recoverer. So I switched to a 5/3/1 4 day split working each main lift once a week vs. 3 x a week. Worked like a champ and I'm back on track. Had I not worried about that detail, I'd still be stuck and frustrated.0

I actually have mixed opinions about this.
In premise I agree with you in that people will tend to overthink minutia when most of the time the things they are overthinking aren't necessarily important.
I think program choice is important, but I also think it's less important for a beginner since they are pretty much going to respond well to any stimulus early on, especially if they're coming straight from the couch to the barbell. You're going to get results on SS or SL or All Pros or w/e. I don't think they (the programs) are identical, but the new trainee is just trying to figure out how to move the barbell for the most part.
I do think that consistency is really going to make the biggest difference between success and failure though, at least until you get to a point that you're "in shape" and an intermediate level lifter. For quite a while it will just be: Eat a reasonable amount, keep lifting, add reps/weight to the bar, sleep, repeat, and that's going to account for the biggest chunk of progress.0 -
I am now figuring out my maintenance. This is where I have slacked in the past. It is now the "minor details" that will keep me focused on new goals:-)0

I think details are important. However, a lot of people get their prioroties messed up. A lot of beginners (this applies to anything, not just lifting) want to learn all the tricks and specific "sexy" details first. What they need to do is learn the fundamentals and general knowledge first to build a solid base. After you master the fundamentals, you can start to get into the details and "tricks".0
