Just not worth going out to eat anymore

It nice to go out to dinner once in awile but anymore it not worth the hassle. I try to order simply with out being one of " those pepole " . But seem to get sick after eating at alot of places. This last time I realy feel that me asking questions got me bad service and a blackend meal . Has anyone had this happen or had trouble getting food the way you would like. This was not a cheep place I know that the chain places can't do much it all premade or mostly so. Longhorn steakhouse has been the only place that seems to get it right for me. But eating at only one place gets old but thats what I think we will do. Also I have (HAE) this diet has very much helped that condition so getting some bad food can cause 2-3 days of a bad reaction. I would like to know what you say to get good service but not make the waiter think you will die at the table if its wrong. Where is your middle ground? We mabye go out to eat once a month so not so much I can be a regular anywhere.

    I know what you mean
I was sabotaged by family members this weekend and brought to a buffet against my will
After my second plate of food I started feeling pains in my stomach. I can only imagine what my body was going through trying to process all that garbage

The only place I go "out" to eat is Subway. Lol. Every once in a while I'll chance a bunless burger, but I also hate being "that customer" when ordering food. And it's crazy expensive and if I get glutened, I react for anywhere from an hour to 4 days. Totally not worth it. :-/

If it makes you feel better, my husband and I rarely go out to eat anywhere either.
We're one of those "no cheese, no tomato, no bun, on the side" couples that servers hate.

Between his acid issues and my multiple problems, it's a real fun time.

There are no restaurants where I live but I do look forward to eating out when I am on holidays. I agree that it's no longer worth it. Last holiday I chose to camp and make most of my own meals, which were delicious. The few restaurant meals that I did have were expensive and it was hard to get something not covered in flour, sugar, canola or soy oil. I have to agree that the fast food outlet salads are almost the best choice, but I do not like spending my money at chains.

Personally, I think we need to remain assertive about what we expect in restaurants without being embarrassed. Who else is going to let them know that these foods are unhealthy and unacceptable to a growing number of people? If I'm going to pay $50 for a meal out for my child and I, I should be able to get something healthy AND delicious. So far, that has not been the case.

i COMPLETELY agree. if we pay, and we are courteous and friendly, why shouldn't we get what we order? it's not a stranger's house, it's a restaurant :) be brave but friendly! i usually say something like "hi! thanks for waiting on me. i have a bad reaction to all bread products, and would LOVE to avoid a (doctor's visit/stomach ache/whatever is honest). Can you help me and/or give me suggestions?" and usually, if the waiter is clueless or very young, i'll ask if the cook could come out and chat for just a second if it's a nice restaurant. most of the time, i have no trouble! and i tip BIG. like $10 for a $15 entree, $20 for a $40 bill, etc. that way they are more ready to help people like myself in the future.

my hubby and i go out to eat like once every 3 months or so, for big celebrations. since i've been eating paleo and learning to cook better and creatively, unless it's an amazing restaurant, may i humbly admit i can make a better meal than what i get out?

what i mean is this - i am no chef but i can throw kerrygold butter in a pan and then slap a $8 steak from Trader Joe's in with salt and pepper and cook some veggies and make an AMAZING meal for hubby and i, with wine, for $15-$20 total. and it's amazing because of the quality of ingredients usually, not my "skill". so we just don't want to go out often. plus we're broke college kids! lol.

but i know it's a lot about lifestyle. i have 2 prep days where i cook and chop food for about an hour or so each day, and we make meals mostly from that. so it's literal "fast food" for us :) but we don't have kids running around yet, so YMMV.

ETA: i say all this and realized some might consider my success to be due to my being not OCD paleo. i don't really care what oil they cook my veggies in when i'm eating out. i don't get fried stuff usually so the fryer being contaminated doesn't sway me. i don't react to a spoonful of soy sauce at a sushi place. so i guess i am not as sensitive and that's what makes it work for me. unless i'm gonna get sick, i don't sweat it AT ALL. for me, it's just one meal! i just enjoy myself :)

I will often order a menu item and then only eat the meat and the salad. I get strange looks (and sometimes questions) when I leave all the rest on the plate, but such is life. I've tried special ordering, but unless I know the restaurant can and will do it, I just order a meal (or two) and eat what I can.

I don't find it that difficult to find a reasonably paleo meal in a cafe. But that might be because I only half-*kitten* it. potato? sure! Tomato? Love it!
