newbie foot soreness

Hi all!

So glad I found this group! I am just starting out with the C25K program (iphone app). I've noticed that my feet have been pretty sore- mostly my heels. Is this normal? I do have good sneakers, New Balance, but I don't think they are specific running shoes. I just bought them to work out in general. I don't really want to invest in an another expensive pair of shoes. I'm also using lululemon padded socks. Any other ideas? Something I could do pre- or post-workout to help? Thanks in advance!     You might be heel striking. Try not to take big steps by reaching out in front of you. Take smaller, lighter steps and land with your foot under your center of gravity.

    Ditto to what Varda wrote. I have to fight my heel-striking tendencies all the time and consciously think about using a mid-foot strike. It will feel really weird at first, but it will be more comfortable and efficient in the long run. As you put on more miles, consider getting checked at a running store for over pronation or supination. Neither sounds to me like it would be associated with the pain you describe, but those will commonly catch you a little later in the program and can be mitigated a great deal by your footwear choices. No need to rush to that now, but think about it before you do buy that next pair of shoes. (Welcome to running! The great world where we can always manage to justify another pair of shoes!) :drinker:

    To help with cushioning you can try the new Dr. Scholl's running inserts. I don't use them, but I have heard some good remarks about them. And, it might be an easy alternative for your shoes until you decide to invest in new ones.
