General chit chat

I really find we often only talk about our good and exercise here except for the occasional extra posts... It might be nice to ahe a thread of just chit chat stuff, good, bad, crazy, whatever we need to get out there to our community of supports!

I will even go first and do my best to keep this going see if it catches on for those you just wanna chat a moment!

My husband is finally back after his 10 day trip at work! I asked him to quit after Christmas because this long distance truck driver thing is not working well for our family he has only been doing it since summer. I feel super guilty a little selfish but a lot of reliefs! I am determined today btw to not eat those feelings lol! :) I totally plan this weekend to get my husband to enjoy a river walk with me

I hope everyone is having a super day and has a great weekend planned!!!

It must be really tough having your husband away for those long stretches!

I think this thread is a good idea. I have a silly story of a classic 'bloned moment' (and I am blonde, but usually don't have the derps this bad!):

I went to get gas today. Not that long ago my gas cap needed replacing cuz it was leaking air or pressure or something. Anyway it doesn't dangle anymore, and so I usually hold onto it while I get the gas so I don't forget it. Well, today I put it on the roof of my car. Got the gas, got the reciept, got in my car, drove away. If you're paying attention you'll notice I missed a step. Sure enough I drove all the way to work (35kms) with the door where the gas goes open, gas cap of course is long gone. I'm hoping if I stop tonight it'll be at the gas station... But yah. OOPS! I'm sure I gave many their laugh of the day for their commute home.

i have done that very same thing. and more! one time when my son was real little (like 2), we went to the library for story time and got some books. well, when we were done, i put the books on top of the car while i put mikel in his carseat. then, i forgot the books and got in and drove off. when we pulled out of the driveway and turned right, the whole pile of books went sliding off onto the road. UGH! i only had to pay for one though, the rest came out ok. now that''s a derp moment, and i'm a redhead!

    Carysta,

If it makes you feel better, I once saw a woman go in and pay for her gas, get in her car, start to drive away but not get very far. She'd forgotten to take the nozzle out of her gas tank and it ripped the hose off the pump. I think there must be a shutoff valve, because there was no gasoline geyser, thank goodness. She stopped and went back in and the clerk came out with her. I imagine she gave him her credit card number...

BTW, aluminum foil makes a great temporary gas tank plug.

    Hollyla,

Good luck with your husband quitting the driving job. "Lots of relief" sounds like an important decision. Best wishes!

Hollyla, It must be so hard w/ your husband away so much. We've both had opportunity to do it but it would be just too hard. Our family works better together. Hope it works out the best for both of you. :)

    Carysta,
I've never left the gas cap off, but I've left my purse, wallet and a bag of meatballs (long story w/ a pain in the patootie 18 month old) on the top of my car at different times. I at least got my wallet and purse back, though I was picking up stuff for a block in the snow. lol! Oh and I took off in the car with the extension cord still attached to my block heater. The extension cord did not survive.
Hope everyone has a great weekend!
  • I think we have all had those oppsie moments.... I drove away with my cell phone on top of my car... In the winter so it spent 8 hours in a snow bank.... It worked after it warmed up so I was lucky...

Cary: did you find your gas cap?

My husband does not want to quit... I will have to keep working on that... In the meantime we got some really rough weather so we also did get a nice outdoor walk although we did so some shopping together! We had our birthday dinner for our one son who turned 6 he is full time with his mom so he already had like 3 cakes and we skipped that part all together!

I hope everyone else is enjoying their weekends :)

Cary: did you find your gas cap?

I found... half of it! It broke, right along the line where the threaded part is attached to the part you hold. Sigh. My mechanic will fix me all up, it will be all good, and he will LOL. He's known my family forever, this is not even the biggest derp he's seen me do. There may have been an incident where I managed to hit two trees 5 feet apart at the same time... broke my mirror and dented my bumper LOL.

I am SO glad all you ladies can relate to leaving stuff on the car. For those with littles, I think that you are amazing for not leaving everything everywhere all the time, toddlers are exhausting! Of course my only babies are furbabies so my exposure to toddlers has been in small doses. ;) Love my nieces and nephew to bits though!

I also have almost backed up with the cord for the block heater, thankfully, the cord did survive because I could see it unspooling off my porch.
  • Oh the block heater cord... My old car had to have to plug replaced twice and I only plug in for -25 or lower now (-13f) because my husband gets so mad at me... Like he has never done it.

The most important part with the toddlers is don't forget the toddler most everything else is replaceable!

My youngest full time is 8 so I am well past those days! My youngest part timer is 4 but since it's only part time it's not so bad! When I have all 4 kids together I wonder how those crazy people with 4,5,6 kids all close in age keep their sanity!

And fur babies can be even more naughty we have 3 cats that are way worse then 1 toddler
  • This is kind of the topic, but has anyone started Christmas shopping? I have started but it seems like its coming so fast and I have a lot of people to buy for and I am getting stressed! Ahhh!
  • Everything here is on topic :)

No I have not started Christmas shopping but I am making a trip for American Black Friday shopping to go get some crazy deals! Usually I am waiting till the snow flys to start the shopping :) and although we do have snow I just coughed up a pay cheque to pay for orthodontic care for my son so Black Friday will be my first Christmas shopping day!!

I understand the stress... Make a good plan, and if it's an all day Christmas shopping trip one that does not include junk food and have a great time :)

Holly this is a great idea! I'm so glad your husband is home, my uncle used to be a long-distance trucker so I know how hard it can be on a family. I hope that something happens with your husband's job, maybe something that will allow him to be home more often. Keep your head up, you have such a great attitude!

Carysta Oh man, that is too funny. And it could have been worse!! My aunt actually left my cousin in the cart at the supermarket and drove off once, she got like three blocks away before she realized he was missing. I think the worse I've done is left my coffee cup on the top of the car and drove off…. It stayed put until I stopped, and then there was a waterfall of coffee down the windshield.

Laurie, I have bought exactly two Christmas presents so far. I feel like Christmas is coming way too quickly and honestly for me it doesn't even feel like the holidays are close by. Idk, I'm just in a holiday glum I guess.

The past couple of weeks for me have been really hectic and stressful. Some of you may know I am a full time college student. I'm in an accelerated online program, so it's way different from 'traditional' school. Basically I focus on one class for a month, but have to learn as much in that month as a 'traditional' semester. The class I'm in now is just insane, it's really intensive and I've felt like ripping my hair out multiple times. Add to that the fact that our cat chewed through the charging cord for my computer, which meant having to replace the entire adapter, which was $90, and now our car battery is dead, which is another idk how much but a lot of money, yeah. It's been stressful.

Sorry for the novel!! I hope everyone had an awesome weekend, and that Monday is treating you well!

Christmas stress hasn't hit me yet, but it will soon. I can already see all my available free time in December disappearing, so I have no idea when I going to get anything done. My work hours have doubled as of the last 2 weeks. Right now I'm just looking online and in flyers for ideas. I'll probably have to get a babysitter to escape my children. My monsters are 3,5, and 8 and VERY snoopy. I have a few things tucked away already, because they might not be there when I'm finally ready! lol!

Jess, that course sounds intense. I looked into online courses but they demanded so much time, that it wasn't viable. Kudos to you!

It's getting harder to shop - the generations seem to be multiplying exponentially. So when my sister called to say my siblings decided on only one gift each (by drawing names) it was a pleasant surprise. The sibs will get gifts for their own kids & grandkids. So now it's just Mom, one sister, my husband, his Mom and our furry babies. Nice!

I'll probably still give a little cash to the nieces & nephews to help with their new families. But it's just so nice not to be required to shop. What a gift! Wish all could be so fortunate.

On another note... Smelled something burning on the way to work yesterday and guessed it might be the seat warmer (it'd felt too hot recently). So I turned it off and pulled over to look. There was a coin-sized hole melted through the fabric!! It wasn't frightening because it stopped before anything bad happened. But...
  • I love this thread already...

@jess I get the stresses, bad things tend to happen in 3s seems to be very true! Keep plugging away at it and those small changes you make do add up! I hope the battery doesn't set you back to far...

Pixy: 3,5,8 that is a handful for sure, I only end up with it that crazy every other weekend! 4 and 6 for my part timers and 8 and 14 for my full timers! Are they girls or boys or both? All teenage girls could be scary given my experience with one lol!

Paula: Christmas is so expensive... And so hard to cut the list down.

So my husband did go back on the road yesterday and I had an argument with my scale this morning so I am feeling a little irritated with my day, but thankfully I don't count what my scale has to say any day but Thursday so hopefully it's just fooling with me... The slow and steady route is working but it can be hard to judge mid week!

I didn't have time to pack a supper before coming to work so I need to go to subway for supper tonight! I am glad I only
    Work the occasional evening shift!

On the sad note in my life I am coming up to the 4 year anniversary of a very close relative passing away... And for the first anniversary since I don't feel like locking myself away and crying and eating every item of junk food I can find for the whole week so maybe this one won't be as bad but I might slip away from chatting on the weekend...

Greif is so strange, isn't it. When my Mom died five years ago, I lost a lot of weight as i walked off my sadness and get my head straight to look after my Dad.

When he died a year later, i went to the food court, drank soda, read the newspaper, and ate chips until I started to feel better--which took a very long time...in fact I didn't actually start to feel better until after I stopped going to the food court, drinking soda, and eating chips. Oh well...live and learn.

    Be well. All of you.

Hollyla, Only my youngest is a girl. She is such a willful terror (but completely adorable and loving) that I see reflections of myself at her age and that is scary. I was very opinionated, till life beat it out of me. :( She's incredibly clever doing things that her brothers weren't ready for until older. I know she is going to be a handful of a teenager! My only hope is that her moral compass is in the right direction. :D My oldest are boys are stubborn too, one cheeky and funny and the other creative and sweet, but stubborn like mules. My dh says they got double the stubborn genes from us. lol! You watch kids? Like a dayhome? Amazing... hats off to you. I watched my kids and my nieces full time for 6 months and had to stop. 10hr a day with a 6month, 1.5, 3, and 4 year old and I was going a bit crazy. You must have great patience. Silly me... I might of misunderstood that. Four kids to raise and help raise. Wow! I repeat you must have great patience... a teenager that makes me quake in my shoes. :O
I am sorry for your grief. Take care of yourself.

Paula, It's great that your family instigated drawing presents. Extended family can get a bit overwhelming. My sister in law has made a rule that we can only get each other a christmas decoration, and then we get a present for the nieces and nephews! This actually isn't bad since my husband only has one sibling. So I only have to find presents for 5 nieces and nephews! They're all so little so its quite fun. Note: this doesn't include my side of the family...sigh. :D

Anyway, in local news, it has probably snowed a little less than a foot and a half in the last 2 days. So I'm living in a winter wonderland. Roads are dreadful and LOTS of shovelling. lol! More due for the rest of the week. I'm actually enjoying it... not too cold yet. :D Time to get out the Christmas decorations!

    Hey everyone.

What a thread to try and catch up with. What I recall:

Paula, seat warmer - Didn't you leave a "T" off the finish of your post?

Holly and Mark, As Mark knows, my mother passed away Friday. Not unexpected, just so hard to believe I can't pick up the phone and talk to her ever again. So I am travelling for the second week in a row. I managed to somehow squeek out a small loss last week, this week I am not so sure. I'm not grazing much, but I find I am grazing. Maybe the travel will help as I won't be snacking in the car except on Quest bars.

All on the X-mas shopping. I haven't panicked yet. In prototypical US Male fashion I'll wait until the final 48 hours to panic...

Time to go finish packing. Be good you all.
  • Dan, I feel for your loss expected or not it's never an easy time. Take care of yourself rest when you can make healthy choices when you remember and hope that everything goes smoothly!!! I think death is sort of a free pass for just one weigh in! My thoughts go out to you and yours!

Ah Paula I missed the seat warmer stuff... Igniting your car on fire is a costly way to warm up in the cold weather! Better get that checked!

Pixy: gosh I could never be a child care worker my kids are enough lol my husband and I both came with two children my teenage girl who is a cheerleader and the cause of my stress despite being a really good kid... That little skirt makes me wanna lock her up
My 8 yo is a boy who thankfully is sort of a nerd and prefers safe activities like reading and setting my dresser on fire (didn't catch thankfully) and then my husbands kids are one boy and one girl! It's a mad house often in our house but when they are all asleep and I get 5 minutes to myself I am thankful as they are pretty awesome!
Ah the good old snow I have seen a few of us have to contend with such blissful winter weather... I would be jealous of Malia right now but she has to contend I am sure with big ugly bugs and I would rather take snow!
  • ..in fact I didn't actually start to feel better until after I stopped going to the food court, drinking soda, and eating chips.

I think this is something a lot of us need to realize when we are stuffing our emotions down with a double cheeseburger! Thanks for sharing that!

Dan, you little devil. You made me laugh and then you made me cry. After my father died, I was stunned for months. I'll shed tears for you this weekend. So sorry.
  • Good morning my friends, I woke up to being almost at a stand still from pain in my right ankle and knee, I think it's just weather related and will ease up but walking is very painful however i do not believe in medicating for most small pains so I think I am going to have to bare this pain and get moving anyway!

I find it funny that I qot sober, quit smoking, stopped taking unnecessary medications all because I wanted to be healthier but my biggest struggle has been with my fridge... I think in part cause as a small child it was what we did... For any life event we devour those emotions in a meal or dessert... Weddings funerals birthday holidays anniversarys retirement it all involves food! From small children we are told we must eat... It makes the battle with that addiction more engrained in us! I know for some people it is the opposit battle too they had little to no food as a child and that makes for unhealthy binge patterns as an adult... My mom is like that from the time I was little food was an obsession as was dieting.

I work super hard to try not to damage my kids little brains with food... Neither of my kids are overweight but my son is very thick and doesn't like a lot of sports... Thankfully he likes swimming and I'm considering putting him in competition swimming to keep him active..

Anyways time for a super fun day :) I am looking forward to a lot I paper work today and with any luck I can have as good of an eating day as yesterday!!!! I am feeling very confident in my day!!!

Good morning! It is -28 out there this morning. Got the kids up, fed, bundled and sent them off to school w/ dad. I'm letting my littlest sleep in. She had a late nap (passed out on a kitchen chair) yesterday, woke up and was awake way too late last night. sigh. However she is a great excuse not to go outside till later. lol!

Hollyla, I thought I might of misread that after I posted. So I edited it. lol! I hear a lot of part-time and full-time spots because my brother's kids are in care. :) My kids may drive me crazy but they make everything so much fun and lively. lol! It sounds like your hands are FULL!
I worry that I will cause my kids damage w/ my eating issues. I tried to let my husband take the lead on that but all he wants to feed them is instant and junk food. His eating habits are crap, but he doesn't have a weight issue. I want them to learn the value of good food. When I was a kid, my mom was constantly on different diets and I was a little chubby ( almost nothing... just not stick thin) so I would have to eat what she was having. I wasn't allowed to eat the same things as my brothers. My dad encouraged this because I wan't perfect (sigh). It developed in me and almost obsessive hatred of being denied, if people try to take something away from me I binge. I've gotten better but...dang! Every time I tell them to eat their dinner I cringe, not knowing if it's right or wrong. But jeez, they've eaten no vegetables that day or much of anything. Multivitamins are a fabulous thing.

Dward, I'm sorry for your loss, take care of yourself! hugz!

But time to go wake my chickadee for parent and tot dance class. Ahh, the life I lead!
  • Good morning my friends... Battle with my scale has been resolved got my steady -.5 today! It's working and I am not messing with it though! I am feeling pleased!!

It is so cold here this morning, I am one who likes winter over all... But I don't love the cold in fact I hate being cold so I am hoping this is just a short spell of cold and not what we can expect all winter!

Pixy: wow it must have been very hurtful to be isolated like that, but don't worry getting your kids to eat there veggies is not the same! As funny as this is given my moms obsession with diets is she won't eat veggies she will eat soup on a triscuit or cabbage or a week but won't sit down and have a cucumber or something, and my mom lives with me now so I started to trick her into eating more veggies!!! My kids both really like veggies so it's not as bad with them but my son he loves his carbs and I know he actually gets that from me...diabetic crack.... I love my starchy whites... But I am getting better!
Last night for maybe the first time ever I had 1/2 a cup of rice with dinner not 1 1/2 cups of rice... I was still full and I feel better for it today!

I also have a NSV to go post!

Hope Thursday is treats us all well!

Dan I'm thinking of you and your family and hoping things are running smoothly!!!

    Yay, so exciting, Hollyla!!
  • Thanks I love rice so that was hard :)

This cold weather can bug off... I seen you had some too pixy! My knee aches so bad I can hardly go down the stairs... Today as I sulked down some one asked what I did... And I had to say... I got old... I'm not even old but my abused bones and joints don't know that!

So what's everyone's plans this weekend?

I am going to go to sleep in Saturday and then try Dan's green chili recipie with cheese biscuits for dinner! Sunday my teenager has her cheerleading class and then I am going to have movie day with the kids on the couch! I don't work out a lot on the weekends but we might so some pleasure swimming or possibly find something else physical if the weather breaks and I get my knee back!

So it's been a long week and we had some really emotional subjects come up... At least for me but the week passed somehow!

Thanks for all being a part of my life and giving me a safe place to say those little things :)

Hi all - Safely back from the funeral. With Pixy posting about -28 I feel the right wimp to cry about the graveside service at 14 degrees with snow and nasty wind. But it has thrown me back into full blown cold mode.

Still, it is good to be back home again.

Life still has to even out, but I'm already mentally working on facing the music of the scale tomorrow morning and going from there. I did a lot of guess work on logging and I'm sure I forgot some things grazed on in the car, or missed wildly on calorie counts trying to find a "closest match" when I got enough signal to log on my phone.

Holly, I hope you enjoy the Green Chile Stew, it really is a favorite in this house. I'm going to be looking up a recipe for Chicken Posole to make on Thanksgiving here. I'll probably be giving up most of my planned days off this week since I was out of work most of last week. I peeked my work email, probably not a great idea as tired and puny as I feel. Made me want to retire, or at least run away. I'll feel better about it all once I'm rested and have the cold under control again.

Time to get back into the challenges and catch up on some of what I've fallen behind in.

Be warned, I'm planning on getting back into MFP with a passion!

    Have a great weekend everyone!

    Hi!
Hollyla! Good job on the portion control... That takes will! I'm not there yet but hopefully soon. I hope your knee feels better soon, that sounds dreadful and I bet you're frustrated. :( Sounds like you have a great family weekend planned. Enjoy it! :D
Dward, I hope you get over your cold soon!
It's my husband's b-day party tomorrow, it should be a lot of fun. He's starting a campfire in the backyard, we put together a little skating rink for the kids to play boot hockey on, we're making burgers on the BBQ and serving hot chocolate. It's supposed to be only -12 tomorrow at worst. Fingers crossed. He's very excited!

Today was a bit of a bomb for me. I've been doing Ripped in 30-Jillian Michaels. Just got through level I and started level II today. I'm going to have to quit it for now. It disgruntles me to no end to say this.... but I'm not physically ready for it. I didn't realize until tonight but it probably triggered my eating today. I was more upset than I thought and bam! I'm going to have to watch that.
  • Good to see you back on the boards Dan! I don't think 14 is overly warm to be standing outside but I'm too lazy to do the math into Canadian temperatures! Hopefully your trip to the scale was not terrible!

I didn't do the stew yet cause I have yet to find green chili stuff but I only tried one store so it is on hold! I made regular chili today but hid in some yummy stuff like puréed beets and peas and spinach!

Pixy: I'm sorry you struggled with eating today! It is an awful feeling but I see you recognized it and found a trigger so next time you will be able to slow it down a bit! Maybe you could repeat level 1 instead of giving it up! With each day you will get stronger and you will get there! Hope you enjoy the birthday celebrations and that it's not to cold out!

So the weekend is half over and I had some great time with my son today but we never even made it out of our pjs! I really hope the cold spell ends soon so we can get outside a little bit!

    How cute is that!
  • Weekend is almost over, and back to work tomorrow! I cannot believe November is almost over but I'm so excited because on Thursday I get to head to the American side of the border for some serious Black Friday shopping! I am going with my mom and three of my friends it should be great!

Today my daughter talked me into buying her McDonald's and i gave in to it and I must say I am sorry it made my stomach very upset. I did be careful to stay in my calories though and I did shop for about an hour as exercise! My knee is feeling a lot better as the weather has shifted so I think I will be able to get in the serious walking tomorrow!

Any big plans for anyone else this week :)
