Good morning Hatters and welcome to a brand new year - 365 days filled with endless possibilities and opportunities! a NEW YEAR means today we can forget what's gone, appreciate what still remains, and look forward to what's coming next!
And we can choose to make positive changes right now - today! We can choose to believe in ourselves and believe that we are worth taking care of, and take those steps to get us where we want to be. We have the power to say this is NOT how my story will end, and realize it's time to turn the page and start a new chapter, because there's so much more to each of our own books than the page we were stuck on.
And its up to us. Each one of us to determine what changes we want, what goals we want to reach, then to resolve to make those changes and follow through. We all know research has shown that people who surround themselves with others striving for the same goals succeed, and tools such as tracking, journalling and group support increase your success.. we are already ahead of the game starting out the new year because we HAVE these awesome aids in place already thru MFP and the Hatters! Woo hoo!
So let's make this year the ONE where we achieve all our goals. I will support and encourage all the Hatters because I believe in eah of you - I believe that you can accomplish whatever you set out to do, and I believe that this year will be OUR year to shine. Remember our motto - small changes lead to big results!
This year my focus will be on fitness and exercise and making better choices as to what I put in my body. I am working on setting a target and will post it by the end of the day... I need to have a specific target in order to be accountable to myself and all of you - I have learned on my journey that for me, vague goals simply don't work.
If any of the Hatters want to post specific goals of their own, as always we look forward to hearing them and will support you in getting there 100%. And if you prefer not to share, know that's perfectly fine (just so the new memebers know that lol).
Together we can help each other accomplish anything Hatters..... so let's get started.... !!!
My January targets:
3o min of walking 4x a week
Basic strength training exercises 3x a week
Increase veggies ( once off restrictions of soft food and liquid only lol!)

Excellent inspiration Snooozie. Thank you so much for kicking off 2014 with this wonderful message!
My horoscope today reads: Take one last, lingering glance backwards -- and then walk away. You need to put the past behind you, and think about what's really, really important to you now.
Does this resonate with you like it doe me? I am so ready to leave 2013 behind and see what exciting things are in store for me in 2014.
Happy New Year to all you great mad Hatters!

Great words Snoozie.
Yes, Diane !!! Overall last year was a good and I really did not falter until the last couple of week. Considering where I have been in the past I see it as growth on my journey. That said, I am glad I reflected and am back on track before it became a slippery downward spiral. In years past it would have taken months maybe years before I changed course. By that time I would be gained a significant amount of weight back, beat myself up, and had a long and extended pity party. The difference this time, reflected on why I slipped and what I can do to possible avoid it in the future. Most of all, I am leaving the brief slip in the past of the old year and will celebrate that I got back on path before ending the old year and starting the new year !!!
Specific goals for January,
I am aiming to focus on exercise MORE (SMALL steps that become habits instead of starting big and becoming overwhelmed as in the past !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! that will lead to BIG results)
1)burn 3,500 calories a week. To make that happen I have joined a different challenge here on mfp and use fitbit.
2)increase my steps by 100 a day.
3)do 50 ab-lounger exercises a day
4)ride my bike no less than 5 minutes a day increasing endurance and adding only 1 minute per week.
I will *High 5* each of the ladies because we have accomplished a lot this year and IPOU !!! WE HAVE THIS NEW YEAR and NEW GOALS in the bag !!!
Now off to do some walking    Happy New Year to my biggest supporters0 -

:drinker: I totally agree Diane - "a NEW YEAR means today we can forget what's gone, appreciate what still remains, and look forward to what's coming next! ". Excited about all the possibilities of what we can all achieve this year ! And in case you don't understand Tammy's use of "IPOU", it's a acronym we use here in the HAtters to say "I'm Proud Of U" (first letter of each word). We also use IPOM (I'm proud of me!) to celebrate and claim every success or change that we make!)0 -
Tammy - how far you have come!!!! Not only with Such am awesome accomplishment with your weight loss, but knowing it's just fine to need a break occasionally as long as we recognize it as just that, and that it truly won't have any impact on our long term goals so no reason to panic. You were smart enough to know when it was time to simply get back on track rather than the old ways where any of us also would have been sliding down that slope and not stopping til we hit rock bottom!! Congrats on all the progress you have made physically and mentally and emotionally my friend! And being one who has also "Previously " resisted exercise, I am thrilled for you in your goals (and can totally relate to achieving those many steps it's huge!!). Love your goals - very smart and doable starting points IMO!! Well done!!0

Hey ladies...
Well, heading back to work in the AM - Dec hasn't been much of an exercise month for me.... and my IPOM moment is that I didn't go overboard with the chocolate this year...and poor Santa didn't have any cookies out this year (bug from hell hit Jersey)...
Dec is an interesting month... with Holiday Specials and what not... but luckily still in the 170s... hoping to make it into the 160s sometime this year... "giggles"...
My size 14 loose fit pants need a belt... and am waiting (so very hard) to get into the size 12 loose fits... money money money - can anyone spare a dime???? just kidding ladies..... luckily consignment is my best friend....
Tammy - congrats everytime I see your ticker I am inspired...:flowerforyou:
Snoozie - goal weight - Way to Go!!!!:flowerforyou:
Missing you Janet - hoping life is just busy for ya.... come back... come back.... the hatters (and me) miss you...
For all the other ladies... let's see what 2014 brings... goal weight or not... eat less, move more...and of course "one day at a time".....
Carol0 -
Thanks so much Snoozie for the inspirational words for this new month and new year!
Great to hear from you Diane, Tammy and Carol as well :-)
My goal is to jump back on the wagon after my holiday hiatus by:
1. Choosing healthy foods to eat
2. Consuming 1550-1650 calories daily
3. Intentionally Exercising 30 minutes or more a minimum of every other day
And most importantly, keeping my spirits and motivation up in spite of this seemingly never ending plateau, believing that I CAN and I WILL lose more weight!!!!
Thank you all for your incredible support, and.....

LOL I know- I kept reposting images trying to find one that would work and in the middle of it I accidently signed out, so my "work in progress" was left on the post  Finally found one that worked- yay!
~Susan0 -
Susan - as usual your pics are the perfect choice so glad u didn't give up trying to post it!
Love your goals - an will give u all the support I can as u work towards them! And you will break through that darn plateau my friend - I wish I could snap my fingers and make it happen but alas we know our bodies do things in their own time even when we do everything right ! All u can say is hang in Susan and we will absolutely do the happy feet dance for ya when it does!!0 -
Carol - good job on the IPOM ! Sorry to hear you also got hit with a bug; I know Tammy was down and out as well over the holidays - hope u both managed some happy times In between0

Snooozie, what a great message to start off the New Year!
Hello, I'm new to the Hatters and excited to have found a group treating this stage of life with a little humor. For years, I was pretty thin and then started adding weight in my 40's. I joined MFP a year ago and lost some, gained some - that old yo-yo story, which we all hate. I've determined that this is the year I'm going to Just Do It - for the first time ever, I've started seeing a few signs of aging and ill health coming on, much that can be alleviated by getting rid of the weight.
My January goals are to 01) make exercising 4 - 6 days a week, 30 minutes minimum, a habit; 02) start controlling my portions; and 03) try to make healthier choices with my food while still allowing myself enough small treats so I don't feel deprived and think I have to binge. (Anyone else ever go with the "this could be my last chance to have these chips, so I'd better gorge on them now" syndrome?)
This is our year!0 -
Welcome Leslie - great to have you with us! Exellent goals - very realistic and smart move to (imo) to allow room in your macros for the ocasional treat.... the lifestyle change is indeed all about just that... the 80/20 rule is what I aim for 80 percent great choices, and 20 percent wiggle room built in just in case its if needed.
I have calculated that every hot flash burns 100 cals btw.... but for some reason the calculations seem off bevause if it were true I should weigh about 9 lbs.... ???? Might have to rework those numbers.... but if SHOULD be true darn it!! .....
As for the chips... well the rest of the Hatters already know that Lays wavy chips are my krptonite... I was completely addicted so an embarrasingly frequent consumption before MFP. iT TOOK ME A LONG TIME to break that habit... eventually getting down to where I allowed myself one bag a month lol..(and I'm talking the family siz bag btw... sigh). Anyway... then I allow ed myself a small $1.49 size bag once a month but much of the joy has gone out of it now that I know how horrible they are for me and what they do to my blood sugar and body in general. So I rarely think about them - except for now when I'm talking about them LOLOL...:ohwell:
I will say after 18 months on MFP... THE BEST thing is that I never ever think that I'm on a diet of any kind... and I eat the foods I love that are healthy for me... and look forward to all the yummy stuff I can have and want rather than focusing on what I think I'm having to do without... now I open the fridge and think hmm some killer fajitas would be good today, or its freaken cold out there a big pot of beef and veggie stew would be fab with a slice of whole grain bread on the side?? yummers!! Right now with only being able to eat soft foods I've had to eat a lot of pasta which I hvaen't eaten much of since I came to MFP... and fine grinding some beef into the sauce to try to keep my protein up... but I admit I'm getting quite bored with the options so cant wait til I can sink my teeth into a crunchy salad - which I find quite hysterical cause it may be the first time ever in my life I dream of salads LOLOL!!
We look forward to seeing your progress and celebrating each success with you!!
I'm thinking maybe should call roll call for the rest of the Hatters to check in, ladies?? :flowerforyou:0 -
Ohhhh, yes, Snooozie, a small bag of Lay's French Onion chips will eventually be a treat I'll allow myself - delicious, but very very bad, that's true!
Have you had dental work?0 -
Hello my wonderful ladies,
I found the following website with 100 calorie recipe meals, while scanning the forum and though some of you may want to check it out
http://www.realsimple.com/food-recipes/recipe-collections-favorites/healthy-meals/400-calorie-dinners-00000000027141/
1st steps to make exercise a habit
1/1 10,561 steps (4.87 miles) I rode my bike and did my ab crunches = 462 calories burned
1/2 11,452 steps (5.07 miles) I rode my bike and did my ab crunches = 401 calories burned
Now to continue.0 -
Morning Hatters!!
and TGIF for those to whom it applies lol... I went back to work yesterday so today is only my Tuesday technically lol!! These record cold temps we are having are helping in my weight loss, because I swear shivering burns calories LOL. i heard this morning the US is about to get hit with another big storm too... not quite sure where but if any of our hatters are in the path... make sure you have flashlights and a manual can opener and water stashed at home!!
Tammy - I took a quick look at that site and immediately flipped it to my work email so I can peruse it on my lunch break... the first recipe that came up was turkey meatloaf and mashed potatos.... I was drooling lol!! Thanks so much!! and AWESOME job on the steps and the rest..... you are ROCKING your goal for this month .. and seeing you post your results keeps me in line to do mine so thanks and congrats!!! :flowerforyou:
Diane - yep I had major dental surgery a week before Christmas - the start of a reconstruction which is gonna take several months but this was the worstest part hence why I;m only starting on mushy stuff... lol.. Hoping within a week or so I can move on to something more substantial ... LIKE TURKEY MEATLOAF!!!! hahahhaha...... (and I dunno if any of you have ever tried those Boost and Carnation instant breakfast type things... but after so long enjoying good healthy fresh food, I found them all quite disgusting and chemically tasting.... blech!! Thankfully now pureeing a lot of veggies but gak that stuff is horrid!!
Found a neat little article that seemed appropriate for us right now (being Ontario people) with these frigid temps comfort food is high on the list of wants.... so an interesting read for some!
The term comfort food is a bit of a misnomer. We indulge in stuff like milkshakes and cheeseburgers to soothe ourselves, but they can actually have the opposite effect once they pass our lips – and it's not just because our clothes feel distressingly tighter.
According to researchers who have studied the link, fast food and packaged pastries can cause inflammation that interferes with mood-regulating chemicals in the brain and can even lead to symptoms of depression.
Fortunately, there are plenty of yummy and satisfying options that will buoy your mood and slim you down.
HABIT: carbo-loading
There's a reason so many so-called comfort foods like mashed potatoes and lasagna are carb-based. Carbs fuel the production of serotonin, your brain's main feel-good neurotransmitter, which activates receptors that help control mood and appetite. But when there is less daylight, your body produces less serotonin, says Judith Wurtman, Ph.D., coauthor of The Serotonin Power Diet – meaning you want to eat more than usual in winter to keep your spirits up. But careful: Not all carbs are created equal.
THE FIX: Eat complex carbs like whole-grain cereal, rice, and oatmeal, which are digested more slowly than refined grains, staving off hunger (and crankiness). For spuds, swap white ones for sweet potatoes, which are rich in B vitamins and lycopene, nutrients that have been shown to help depression
HABIT: reaching for bad fats
Some experts say the tendency to seek out fattening foods in the winter may be a leftover evolutionary urge, since bulking up gives your organs insulation from the cold and may also bolster your immune system. (But unless you're an Arctic explorer, that extra layer is probably not a personal goal.)
THE FIX: Friend the right fats. Healthy fats that contain omega-3's are known to support brain-cell function and positive moods, says nutritionist Elizabeth Somer, R.D., author of Eat Your Way to Happiness. Fish are among the best sources, especially salmon and sardines. Low-fat milk that's fortified with DHA is also a good choice and often contains vitamin D.
HABIT: cranking up the heat
It's natural to crave something warm on chilly days, but many mood-boosting nutrients, including folate (found in kale, lentils, asparagus, broccoli, and beets) are damaged by heat, says Drew Ramsey, M.D., an assistant clinical professor of psychiatry at Columbia University and coauthor of The Happiness Diet. What's more, Harvard researchers found that cooking food can actually decrease how many calories your body uses during digestion. (We burn off about 10 per cent of what we consume through digestion, a not insignificant amount.)
THE FIX: The less you have to zap your food with heat, and the more you have to chew and crunch it as you polish it off, the better. If you can't imagine subsisting on a completely raw diet (don't blame you!), try steaming your veggies. A Journal of Agricultural and Food Chemistry study reports that this cooking technique best preserves the nutrients you need.
HABIT: gorging on sweets
Fewer hours of daylight also means your body may be producing more of the sleep-inducing chemical melatonin, which can leave you lethargic and craving sugar, a quick source of energy. But high-sugar diets are linked to an increased risk of depression, and the sweet stuff causes blood-sugar spikes that can make you grumpy, says Jeffrey Rossman, Ph.D., author of The Mind-Body Mood Solution.
THE FIX: Get your buzz from caffeine – a study in the Archives of Internal Medicine found that it may slash depression risk in women. Just don't overdo it or consume it too late in the day – Rossman recommends two to three 8-ounce cups of coffee a day – since studies link too little sleep to weight gain. Cutting back on caffeine? Load up on B vitamins instead: B12, B9 (a.k.a. folate), and B6 help convert amino acids into the mood-and energy-lifting neurotransmitters serotonin, norepinephrine, and dopamine, according to Ramsey. Sources include poultry, leafy greens, fish, lentils, and eggs.0 -
Wow, very interesting article- thanks Snoozie. No wonder I feel so good after eating lasagne lol.
One note of caution concerning loading up on B vitamins: Be careful about loading up on B6 in particular as it can cause peroneal neuropathy (nerve damage/dsyfunction in your leg), which it actually did to me!
Hope you all are hanging in there in the cold-stay safe and warm!0 -

While I'm waiting on Snooozie, Carol, Patrice, Tammy and anyone else who may have caught a ride to Susan's house....she does have the extra space.....right??// ~``teeheeheeeh....oh well, too late now, we'll stick a nail in the wall....anyway, thought I would pass the time by putting down my goals and thoughts for this great new year!!
I may have gained back a few pounds, but I know all the right ways to get it off! Those of us that have reached the older years, have come to learn, it's quick to come back and slow to leave and will never be gone for good, it will be a lifelong struggle, but we know how to get it off healthily, now....We got this!!
I didn't lose much this year in total, but I have been able to keep off what I did lose, (not counting what I gained this two weeks). To me that is such a huge accomplishment for me!! I have in the past years lost five or ten pounds and then put them right back on , plus many more pounds! This year I didn't. It felt so good to go forward in the new year without that dreaded resolution of trying to kill myself by starvation to try and drop some weight. Only to have it all come back!!
I owe much of my success, to my MFPals!! Without having you all, in my corner to turn to, for the crying times and the laughing times, I would have given up!!.... AGAIN!! I enjoy having the Mad Hatter's to chat with...I wish more of our members would join in , they don't know what they are missing.
I know we are missing some of our regulars. I hope they are just busy and not beating themselves up , for not doing everything they think they should be doing and how fast it should be happening. We are human, and we are older, we will never be able to lose and keep it off, like we did in out twenties!! Can I get an AMEN, Sista'?!?!?!!
Oh, my goodness!! I better wrap it up, I hear tires squealing, Snooozie must be making that U-turn!! I think I see Carol hanging out the window.....
OK , quickly, I want to eat better, not overeat, and cut down on my cholesterol....(more on that in another post).... get in my bike rides at work,( I joined in the MFP Move your *kitten* Challenge in Oct.) drink a protein for my dinner on nights that Babe is working out of town... and most important .....Be kind and remember to love myself, with all my flaws ,I deserve it.
Here I am....Arm's a'wavin'........Oh wait, that wasn't Snoozie's car , it was a truckload college kids heading back to school!!
Still waitin'......0 -
Great accomplishment Time ~~~~ and the plans for the new year even better !!!!!!!!!!!!!!
