I am signing up for a triathlon (2.5 mile canoe/kayak paddle, 5k run, 11m bike) this summer and I have a couple questions for the bikers. I haven't biked in a couple years so what's a good way to start back into it? Stick with low miles? How fast do I build up? If running is any indication, I add miles very slowly. And finally, what (approximate) time am I looking at to peddle 11 miles? It should be fairly flat but I will be using a clunky old bike.

Just start riding. I got back into using my bike about 2 years ago. Then, I was only riding on a chat/gravel trail, which slows you down quite a bit, but 11mi could take me 60-70mins. When I first started riding, I was only able to get 6 or so miles in at a time, but I was able to build those miles up more quickly on bike than running.

If you're riding road, and mostly flat road at that, you could get it done in 50-60mins... depending on how quickly you build up miles. If you have a hybrid or mountain bike.. I would look at seeing if you can put road tires on it at the very least... I haven't competed on my hybrid, but I do know I could be so much faster if I had a road bike.

I have a hybrid bike so mine is slower than what I could do on a road bike.

OH! Does your bike have different speeds? Definitely practice using the gears and get to know which ones you do need for uphill & downhill... so helpful! If you're on a single speed bike... peddling 11mi might take you longer.

oh... and see if you can find some tri or bike shorts!! your bum will thank you  (tho, I still get saddle sore even wearing mine)

Thanks Wiglet! I'm guessing mine is hybrid and has 18 speeds. It was my birthday present in 5th grade and I'm 30 now! I need new tires on it before I start but I'm guessing I'll have more questions then. We have lots of hills here but the tri is fairly flat.

Took Mon Off and rode. Trying to build stamina and endurance. I have a road bike with 24 speeds total. Recently added some thicker tires called "Gatorskins". This added a little weight to bike. Mon I returned to the trail which stretches 39 mi. All paved and lots of everything a biker needs for training! Lots of hills, flat stretches, curves, drops, Mon I rode 22 mi stretch and took 2 quick breaks. Currently trying to build stamina, and speed. This takes patience and practice.
