Would anyone be interested in doing a 5 lb weight loss challenge in April? I had mentioned this in another list but thought I should put it here to make sure it was seen. I thought perhaps it would keep my FOCUSED (slight problem there) and be a little jolt for Spring. lol

    Sure, I'll join in.

It will really BE a challenge, because I'm a slow loser. Also. We are going on vacation for 2 weeks in Mid-April.
BUT there will be a fair amount of walking involved. I have actually been known to LOSE weight on vacation, because we stay busy
and do a lot of sightseeing on foot...

LOL oh my! I have been busy for a couple of days and the challenge took off without me??? that's hilarious! well I have not started yet. I am warming up. my greatest accomplishment for the past couple of days is that I have learned how to import recipes instead of copying them and sometimes it works! If not at least I am copying and pasting them. And I am starting to get a fairly decent selection of recipes that I can work with but I still need more. I love to cook and am now collecting light recipes. Glad to see people are interested!

    I NEED to do this.

Next month around Easter I am going to have many stressful family eating situations. That will be a disaster for me if I don't have a plan to counter the pressure and lose of control over eating options. One family member loves to shop for food, mine of course isn't the finest and that just won't do. He will bring on the expensive wines, cheeses, non stop snacks and larded steaks. I am not exaggerating. My MIL will watch like a hawk to see if my menus are the traditional fare so necessary for Easter and family time. She will insist on roast lamb, piles of buttered mashed potatoes and Granny *********** old fashioned potato fudge cake that splits when baking. Which is good because the hot chocolate coffee sauce must be still warm when you pour it over the cracked cake to seep inside as well as cover the layers. Does anyone else have to deal with this? These are actually wonderful people but control freaks when it comes to food.

So yes I will need something to keep me focused. How will this work?

It sounds as if you will do well over Easter just to "hold the line." Try to avoid the fatty extras as much as possible, especially the snacks. No one will be watching to eat those....They'll be too busy eating, themselves! Concentrate on portion control and the simpler veggies and meats. No one will literally stuff food in your face if you don't make a production out of avoiding the goodies. Make the foods they like, but fill most of your own plate with salad first and be "Way too full" for dessert.

We leave on Easter Sunday for six weeks in Europe...How's that for an eating challenge?

    Oh wow.

First, I think I gained 3 lbs just reading your post.
Second, no. I don't have this problem; we don't have any family here......

How about this: Can you manage to sneak some food between/ before meals so you won't be famished and tempted to dive headfirst into that bowl of mashed potatoes??? That would take the edge off, and you could concentrate on the lighter fare. Put a small dollop of potatoes and lamb on your plate but because you've "snacked", you'll be able to control yourself. You might even be too full for dessert.

I have been known to eat half a can of green beans before going out for a dinner I expected to be FULL of temptations.

Ok Friday is my weigh in day and I did lose .8 this week so I am jumping into the challenge at this weight. This past week I was NOT good at recording my food but did stick to my new hobby (I guess its a hobby? lol) of adding light recipes to this site and cooking from them. I basically find them on the internet, print them and try them, and then if I like them I put them in a notebook I am creating. I also import them in here so I can see the nutritional values and record them. Also this week I made a list of exercises I both need and like and did two of them daily - walking, exercise bike, yoga, light weights, pilates.

This coming week I am going to keep up the exercise and work on two other things I am not good about. The first is recording my food and the second is drinking water. I am REALLY bad about both of those things and especially bad about the water! I think I am going to start making little checkmarks on my calendar page so I can check off glasses as I drink them and don't have to come to the computer. The food problem is that I record breakfast and lunch every day, then in the evening tend to get distracted doing other things and don't come back and finish it off. I have tried recording ahead of time, but can't seem to make up my mind what I want early in the day! lol

Oh well, I lost this week by focusing on the exercise and the light recipes so I am going to hang onto those two and work especially this week with the water and see if it makes a difference. I really want that five pounds off this month! Hot weather is coming and I am getting ready to move to Florida!!!

Hi! I would love to join this challenge. My weigh-in day is Friday, but did not weigh this a.m. So will start with tomorrow's weight.
    My challenge will be:
    1. Record my food
    2. 5 fruits & veggies daily
    3. 3 dairy daily
    4. Small portions
    5. I am going to start with 10 minutes of walking 5 days/week. Then add minutes as I start building my stamina.

Thanks Cris, Good suggestions. I like the idea of eating green beans to dull the hunger. I will come up with some healthy options for me and anyone else who wants to eat sensibly at my house.

Oh this is too weird! I came in and saw that my ticker tape was not there and I had not changed anything! So I went searching to see where to activate it. I could not find it so decided to come back in here and plead ignorance and ask for help. And there is was!!!! Belated April Fools by the computer? Hmmmmmm.

Anyway, Friday is my weigh in day and I made it through the first week with ups and downs. I was VERY leery to get the scales this morning because yesterday I caved to requests and made pot roast in the crock pot and ate it, complete with potatoes and gravy! But the long run of the week won out and I lost 1.4 this week. I am, therefore, a happy camper.

The most important thing that is helping me in MFP is that I can record my food and exercise and watch the balance. If I know I am going to eat a heavy dinner, I add an extra 30 minutes on the bike and knock off a couple of hundred calories! That helps! I am also sticking to the light recipes and I try to do a walk in the morning and my bike in the afternoon, plus alternating about 20 minutes of light weights or yoga. I don't always get it all done, but I do as much as I can! Also the fitbit helps. On days when I am going to be out running errands I make sure to wear it and it cues me to pick that parking place furthest from the store instead of looking for the close one.

As far as the holiday problem, this is what I do. I already tell my bf that we have one day a week to eat whatever we want (normally that is Saturday so that we can go out to dinner. ( That is why weigh in is Friday! lol) If there is a holiday in the week, then that "off program day" becomes the holiday. I eat what I want and as much as I want and I don't worry about it. BUT, anything that is left gets tossed the following morning so everyone can stand warned! I will compromise to all the rich foods, but one day is all that I will give it! Anyone who doesn't like it can moan and groan and hide the food, but if its where I can reach it, it goes in the trash. Sorry, but health is more important!!

Still not doing well with the water, so that will be another focus for this week. I also did not walk as frequently as I should this week so I am going to make sure its my first activity after breakfast! The longer I wait, the more likely I am to not do it.

All in all, I am pleased that I had the loss and hoping to do same this next week!

Just wanted to chime in as I have been doing a monthly challenge for 5# every month since January. It just doesn't do it for me for some reason. Kinda disheartening to see others lose and I don't so I will pass this month. I think the scale is not my friend so just ignoring the numbers, still weighing and recording though. I am working on burning calories and not overeating. One day at a time. Good luck to you all!

Smilesback: Your own advice is best...One day at a time.
Just stay with it and try not to get frustrated. We didn't gain this weight overnight, and your body will respond if you keep track of what you eat. Maybe, don't add exercise calories for a while and see if that works....
