Banged my knee

So on Sunday I got my first ever road bike - just a cheap entry level model. Took it out for a spin to get used to it, as I've only ever had mountain bikes before.

Did 13 miles no problem, and on the last mile I hit a kerb at the wrong angle and went flying! I wasn't able to get my feet out of the straps in time and the bike landed on top of me - result was headache (luckily was wearing a helmet) sore left wrist and shoulder, scrapes down my left calf, and a sore inner right knee where I think the bike impacted.

The knee is my concern - it was fine on Sunday, just tender to touch, but over the past couple of days its gotten worse, slight swelling, bruised and now I'm walking with a limp. The bruising and pain is located just below the kneecap on the inside (so not the kneecap itself).

I've done RICE and rested. Should I just keep doing this and hope it goes away? I have to get in and out of work so I can't stay off it all day and RICE all day. How long would you wait before you went to see a doctor? Its been nearly 72hrs now since it happened.

I've had bruises before, but never one that made walking actually painful so I'm a bit concerned!

I've smacked my knee more times than I can count from being an adolescent boy with no interest in video games. If you bruised a tendon it will take a bit longer to heal. You've only been RICE-ing for a few days, give it a few more. Try an NSAID (Aleve is my pill of choice). When I blew out my knee I know I couldn't walk on it, when I broke my knee cap I could barely walk on it, and when I dislocated my knee I couldn't walk on it. Outside of something like a partially torn meniscus there isn't a whole lot more you can do to a knee that still involves being able to move about when it's over.

sorry to hear! many cyclists have a story like this, so don't feel bad. i got myself in a single-bike accident last fall by veering off the path into the soft gravel and then over-correcting and flying over my handlebars (luckily i wasn't clipped in). i think it took 4-5 days for my knee to feel better, and i banged the outside. the inside will surely be sore for a longer time. keep icing and i'd say that if it still hurts a lot after a week it might be time for a doc visit.

    good luck!

Thanks guys! Its actually feeling much better today. I think I was just panicking because I just signed up for my first Duathlon in September and training time is a bit tight! Worried I'd ruined my chances before I'd even begun!!!!

After spending so much time worrying about my knee it turns out my wrist was the problem.

X-Ray yesterday shows I fractured it in 2 places!!!! Thats me off the bike for a while!!!
