Need food help

I've been living on less then 900 calories for atleast 1 month now (I was eating the same stuff for 1 month before that but just started logging a month ago) and I've lost 76 lbs so far, started at 585! But my dietician wants me to increase my calories to 1500, and I'm trying but eating has turned into a chore trying to figure out what I'm going to eat. I dread noon, and 6 o'clock (when I eat). I know eating shouldn't be fun and enjoyable (that's how I got to this point!) but it should atleast be tolerable right?
Everything seems to have too much of something in it, other then chicken..I have pretty much lived on chicken for the past 2 months and I'm getting very burnt out fast, its always dry..and thats why I wont eat turkey, its soo dry. I have a bad issue with certain textures in foods. Sometimes if I eat something so often, it will get to where it literally makes me gag when trying to eat it..probably a mental issue..Chicken was that way for awhile, but I'm back to being able to eat it again. I don't want to risk getting back to that point.
I also don't have the funds to make amazing different healthy meals..tried spaghetti squash (8$ for 1 squash I couldn't eat!)
Is it possible to get my calories up without going over on fat, carbs and sodium?? I have changed so much in the past 2 months, I don't like eating when I'm not hungry (where as I used to eat all the time hungry or not) and I'm not a breakfast eater.
I'm diabetic, dietician doesn't want me to go above 100 carbs. I don't see her again before surgery (still don't have a date) cause she said I did so well I don't need her..but I did talk to her one day when I went for my psych appointment, and she did say I was eating too few calories..
She said no fruit (sounds weird I know..but I do eat some fruit every now and then if I have a sweet tooth and it doesnt effect my blood sugar much)
My diary is public..Am I just counting wrong? I list everything I put in my mouth and it seems like I'm eating more then what my diary says I am. I just wan't to get this all figured out before surgery, so I don't risk having issues after surgery.

Hi, sorry you are having food issues with not wanting to eat and problems with chicken. Congats on your weight lose so far, you are doing really well. So you are trying to keep carbs low. so what about yogurt, eggs, fish (tuna) salmon whatever, cheese, you would be surprised what you can come up with. Also I know there is a recipe section on MFP maybe that would help you out. Maybe if you planned your meals the night before that might help to. These are just a few suggestions, I am sure others will speak up. Again good luck with the up coming surgery and your new life.
P.S. Just looking quickly at your journal all looks pretty good, the only thing I can suggest is see if you can weigh your eg tomatoes 100g instead of 1/2 tomatoe.. you will get more accurate info. because tomatoes come in different sizes so 1/2 doesn't mean as much as 100g when it comes to logging. Plus make sure your get in all your water, if helps with weight loss as well as our bodies needing it. Hoped some of this helped.0 -
Greek yogurt, eggs, single serve tuna packets, mix protein powder into Greek yogurt, look at others' diaries for ideas.
You can figure out how to add a few hundred calories if you put your mind to it!

I want to start w/ congrats on your weight loss! I can't imagine the level of discipline in must take for you to have done this. I looked at your food log and it looked pretty darn good.
Hmmm, so I'm not sure I agree with 2 things. #1 Food in my mind should be enjoyable. I look forward to cooking and I love my creations. I look forward to my vegetarian chilli with cheese in the afternoon or a delicious avocado salad! Of course there's a thin line between food obsession/addiction and being a foodie if you will. #2 is more so a question than a disagreement. Why don't you want to boost your fat intake? I haven't seen a study to date that shows fat causing inflammation or non-corporate sponsored research saying fats cause heart disease. Yes, fat increases your low density LDL (the good part of your LDL), but carbs is what impacts your high density, small LDL which leads to atherosclerosis. I'm not a clinician or medically trained, so this is information you can research further on your own, but I will leave you w/ 2 youtube videos that discusses obesity and metabolic syndrome.
With that said, avocado has been a huge calorie booster to my diet. It's excellent fat, fibre and low in carb. Almonds/peanuts is an awesome snack as well. I don't eat low fat/no fat yoghurt (or anything as a matter of fact). Besides the higher fat versions usually have 1-3g more protein per serving and less sodium. If you strain your own yoghurt or buy greek yoghurt, you remove a lot of whey which has a decent carb content. Snacks like hummus has decent protein for the serving size and baba ganoush also adds on the calories w/o the significant carbs. I usually add 1/2 tbsp heavy cream to bulk up my fat intake. Before I went vegetarian, I went after fattier fishes like salmon and used to eat dark meat chicken. Post op, you may find lean meats difficult to swallow w/o discomfort or adding mayo/yogurt to make it more of a tuna salad consistency.
I've been struggling getting in much more than 600-650/day (I'm 4 months post-op tomorrow) most days. I eat high fat, moderate protein, low carbs (I net 25-40 g carbs per day). Although I'm not diabetic, eating grain products makes me hypoglycemic post-op, so I cut that stuff out altogether. I researched what's best to replace my carbs (for a while my intake dropped to 450 cal/day) and found fat isn't the demon we make it starting w/ sources like Dr. Lustig, Dr. Mercola, Tim Noakes and Dr. Eenfeldt. I agree w/ your doctor definitely on limiting carbs and so would these guys. I came across a study some time ago that reported that patients who remained below 90g carbs post op were more successful in maintaining maximum weight loss. Mainly I'm just trying to follow what my dietician instructed of me, which was no more then 30% of my calories from fat. (30% fat, 35% carbs, 35% protein)
Yes I was under the impression fat caused heart disease, my dad died of heart related causes (and stroke) at 45..so I do worry about that.
My cholesterol is not high, but my good cholesterol is on the lower side of normal (as of before I started my diet)
I never tried avocados (I will add that to my list to try), never been a huge fan of nuts , but I think I could add them to my diet every now and then for a change.
I have switched all my carbs to whole grains, up until a few weeks ago I was still eating white bread..I never used to like whole wheat bread, but I tried the thin stuff and I actually like it just as much as white.
When I eat greek yogurt I usually eat yoplait 100 calorie greek yogurt, haven't had it in awhile cause I have a major problem keeping my sleeping schedule at normal hours and I tend to sleep through breakfast which is another reason I have trouble getting my calories in. I refuse to eat past about 10 at night, usually nothing after dinner unless its a small bit of fruit.
I was eating tuna almost every day for awhile, then I heard about the mercury thing and stopped doing that, now I'm trying to limit my tuna intake to 2 cans a week.
Eggs I will not touch with a 10 foot pole, always hated eggs, can't even stand to smell eggs.
My main concern is sodium, even only eating half my calories I eat more sodium then recommended for someone on blood pressure meds0 -
I'm sorry to hear about your dad, really. I definitely encourage people to stick with the recommendations of the health practitioners treating them, considering I am not one and I do not have the training to or have a full understanding of your medical history. What I do encourage is a questioning attitude in recommendations since the pyramid diet recommends 60% (or 1200 cal) of a 2k cal diet to come from carbs. This recommendation has failed to improve the health of Americans and the world, so I definitely have a more questioning attitude when it comes to diet, health and fitness. As for fat causing heart disease, I'm afraid the evidence to that isn't really there. I'm sure their are people adversely affected by fats by itself, but my guess is that it's not large enough to impact meta analyses or smaller group studies. If you do a good search for fat is good or fat is bad, you'll see a lot of reports explaining that it's not what we thought. Definitely talk to your nutritionist about your understanding of food and perhaps they can provide some clarification.
Switching to whole grain is definitely a good start! With the presence of fiber it can slow down your absorption/conversion into sugar. I understand the eggs thing. It's one of those things that was just okay, nothing I'd buy, because like you, I don't like the smell or the consistency if fried. Boiled? Forget about it! Scrambled or omelet I can tolerate with some lemon juice and pepper to cut the smell. I didn't eat eggs for almost 2 years, then decided to try it again as something quick for breakfast and found it pleasant enough.
It's really unfortunate, but more of our meat is unsafe. Tuna wasn't my favourite, but swordfish and abalone were. Swordfish is unfortunately in a high mercury category. Perhaps you can try fishes that are lower in mercury like Salmon, N. American Mackerel and Tilapia. I've included the FDA website that shows some expected mercury content in various sea foods.

I looked at your diary, and you are doing a great job. Yesterday, you got in only 63 grams of carbs. That is a good number. As a former diabetic (YAY! thanks to VSG) I like to be below 50 grams of carbs if I can help it.
Here are some suggestions:
Eat two more meals per day, on average. You shouldn't just eat 2 or 3 times per day. If you are pre-op, you need to get into the habit of eating small meals throughout the day. That is how you shrink your stomach and get used to the small portion sizing.
You need to spread your calories out over the whole day. So, if you want to get 1500 calories in, make sure you are having 5 x 300 calorie meals or snacks per day. Try not to get the majority of your calories in during one or two meals. I used to do this - skimp all day and then have a nice, big dinner. That is not how you will be able to eat post-surgery, so best to train yourself now.
I think you should focus on adding protein and some fat to get the calories up - avoiding carbs. You can add a glass of milk, protein shakes, cheese, low sodium deli meats, nuts. I like to really brown ground meat (chicken, beef, pork) and cook with small-chopped veggies (onions, zucchini, mushrooms, red peppers), and eat on iceberg lettuce cups. You can flavor with all kinds of spices. Another great trick is to season and grill a bunch of meat on Sunday and eat throughout the week - chicken tenders, pork cutlets, etc. Shrimp and mussels are also great sources of protein with low calories.
I see you eat a lot of sandwiches. If instead of having a sandwich, you dropped the bread and added 2 oz of cheese, you would cut the carbs out of the sandwich and add about 90 calories. Or do an openfaced sandwich and double the meat. I don't advocate eating bread when you're diabetic, but if you ate regular sliced bread instead of the very thin sliced bread, you would add 70-100 calories per meal.
Be careful with PB - it has a lot of carbs and fat in it and that really adds up. I just bought PB2 on amazon, they also have it at my grocery store and Target. It is peanut protein powder, without the fat and added sugar. Really yummy.0 -
Yes I tend to eat a lot of sandwhiches..I've never been a huge fan of cheese.. I'm quite picky for a fat person! Today I did bad..I ended up having to go to the ER because I've been having issues breathing for the past week or so, and it got worse today..I'm fine they said its pleurisy. I had 95 carbs today, I ended up having a 6 inch chicken sub from subway..KFC pot pie was really calling my name..lesser of two evils I guess, but I know still not "healthy" It was a last minute thing I'm used to eating at 6 and didn't get out of the hospital till 8.
I do eat sargento colby jack cheese sticks sometimes, my fiance picked up the low sodium ones, and I tried those and couldn't even swallow it, it tasted so bad to me
So VSG controlled your diabetes? I am leaning more towards VSG, but was worried it not work for diabetics as well..My sugar tends to run abut 109-115 after meals right now, (depending on carb intake, obviously) which is much better then it used to (160 average)
Its gonna be tough to eat 5 times a day..i tend to not even want to eat at all!0 -
My diabetes did totally resolve post VSG. I left the hospital that way, and have not taken metformin since. My surgeon recommended VSG specifically for that reason, as there is a correlation between removing that part of the stomach and normalizing hormones that affect metabolism and cause metabolic dysfunction when they are out of whack (Google it).
It is so important to get your eating habits on track pre-op! It is challenging, but I know you can do it if you put the effort into it. It is the key to success, and to being safe and healthy post-op.

I was thinking if you wrapped your sandwiches in lettuce instead of any kind of bread and had a bowl of oatmeal for your whole grain, you might be more satisfied and eating less processed food. I didn't see if you mentioned being lactose-intolerant. If you are NOT lactose-intolerant, I recommend Kroger Carbmaster No-sugar milk, if you have it in your area. 1 cup is only 60 calories, it has plenty of calcium and much fewer carbs than regular skim milk. It also would taste good on your oatmeal.
Yes, I like oatmeal. I miss it since I got my sleeve. Carbs don't like me. So if you're allowed to have them, make them the best you can. Oatmeal has a low glycemic index and is an unprocessed whole grain which is why I recommend it. it does tend to stick to the ribs when you put a little milk on it. i'm not talking flavored oatmeal, I'm talking old-fashioned oats (about a buck for a 16 oz cannister at the grocery store) or even better steel-cut oats.
Don't know if you're allowed artificial sweeteners. If so a little splenda will make it a nice treat.
And congrats on your weight loss. It's quite an accomplishment. You are on the road to better health. Keep going!0 -
Hi there! Im Allison & Im pre-op too. :drinker: I took a quick peek at your food diary. Putting this much thought into what you eat does sorta start to feel like work after a while, what helped me was trying new things or different ways to prepare stuff. I was curious as to what, if anything you have to drink. Thats something I never paid any attention to for the longest time, but have learned to actually enjoy not taking any fluids in as it helps me feel fuller longer.0

I never drink any kind of calories at all, I drink nothing but plain faucet water, or bottled water. No flavored water. I have a 32oz cup I drink out of and drink about 2 a day. I tend to forget to count my water though.
I've tried oatmeal, I have some..but I tried it unsweetened and couldn't do it. I've never been a fan of artificial sweeteners and aspartame gives me a headache, so I don't know if splenda would but I'll try it.0 -
Splenda is not aspartmane, it's left-handed sugar, called sucralose. Basically the sugar molecule reversed so our bodies can't make use of it and it passes out without effect. Also, you could try Stevia, or monkfruit 'sugar' which is basically...monkfruit in a granulated form and tastes just like sugar. It's a little pricey, but it's not like you're using it by the cupful. In time, as you wean yourself form sweets, you may find the taste of oatmeal alone pleasant. Your taste buds will change and things you didn't used to like you may find you do.

From what I've read in my research surcalose has the same effect on the insulin rollercoaster that processed carbs such as sugar, white flour, etc have. Personally, I try to use nothing but Truvia, which is a Stevia leaf extract.0

The monkfruit sugar, which is what I use, has a glycemic index of 1. I think it tastes best of all the artificial sweeteners.0

Ok - here's a comment from the tough love side of the house; you are pre-op and you are eating at UNHEALTHY levels which will hurt you. Based upon the information in your post your Basal Metabolic Rate (BMR), the number of calories you'd burn if you stayed in bed all day, should be around 2900 calories per day. This is why the nutritionist wants you to get up to 1500. 900 is way too low.
You need to up the calories and considering your dietary restrictions (taste preferences & diabeties) I highly suggest you add at least 2 daily protein shakes mixed with mik. This will add between 40-80 grams of protein and around 400 calories to your diet plus you can sip on them slowly allowing you to feel full. You can choose a low carb protein powder (I like Isopure) and use non-fat milk. If you want to up the calories more then blend some fruit and peanut butter to the shake.
I see that costs are a consideration. The bucket of protein powder may cost $50 but break it down to the number of meals you can replace (Subway, KFC ect.) and you will see how much money you will be SAVING.0 -
I know its too low, I think if i could get my sleeping schedule back on track it would be easier to get my calories in. I im iffy about eating past midnight (do i count is as the next day or previous day cause I hadn't slept yet?).
Got some almond milk today, I was using just 2% milk..I have my pure protein rich chocolate I've been trying to get in atleast once a day and just ordered a sampler pack of syntax nectar a few days ago..can't wait till that comes in.
My dietician said I'm not allowed to eat fruit..I don't know why really, but i have eaten a half a apple every now and then if I have a sweet tooth.
Pure protein isn't that expensive, I paid 19$ for a 2lb bucket..its edible, but I wouldn't want to live on it. So if I like the nectar I may get a bucket of it and use that as a "treat" to break up the monotony of drinking the pure protein.
And for some reason my local grocery store doesn't have unsweetened almond milk..Just the original that has 8 carbs, my protein powder has another 8 carbs..thats 16 carbs right there, and a extra 380 sodium 2 times a day which is 760 extra sodium. I try to eat low sodium choices when they have them but even my chicken has 300- some sodium0
