Unflavoured Protein powder, what kind to bake with?

Ok this has probably been asked, so please forgive me. I do not use any form of protein powder for anything. However I want to start to enjoy some of my homemade baked good and was thinking about adding protein powder to add so more nutrients to them. Which ones have you tried and tested for baking, preferably unflavoured. I live in Canada so may not be able to get all the wonderful products that my southern neighbours have that their disposal. Any advise would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Hi asia1967,
Syntrax Nectar unflavored is a protein powder that I have used for baking before. I know that you can buy it from nashuanutrition.com and they ship to Canada. Unjury.com also ships to Canada and they make an unflavored protein powder. You can buy samples of the Unjury before committing to a tub to make sure it works for you. I haven't tried baking with their unflavored protein powder but I have experimented with their Chocolate Splendor flavor and it worked well.
If you are in need of some wls-friendly baking recipes, check out eggface's blog:

You can use the links on the left to navigate to her recipes for cakes, pizza, etc. or use the search function to look for whatever you want - muffins, cookies, pretty much anything. She's American so her recipes are given in Imperial measurements and you might have to do a little translating, but I have to say they are fabulous and work really well.
If you have a GNC store near you, they should have unflavored protein powders as well and may be able to provide guidance about which might work best for baking. Good luck!0 -
SibylDiane: Thanks for all the great info. I will check out eggface. and give GNC a call and see what they have to say. Thanks again.0

Do you have access to London Drugs? They have an unflavoured protein that is pretty good. It would probably work. It's in a white tub with a green label.
I use it and mix it into pretty much everything.0 -
Just keep in mind that Unflavored protein does not mean tasteless. It will have a taste to it - it just doesn't have any added flavoring.
Personally for baking and cooking, I use the flavored stuff. I put a scoop of chocolate protein in my oatmeal, and mix in some PB2. Or I'll use vanilla in something. The vanilla is a pretty good addition for anything that normally has vanilla extract in it.
Oh, also be mindful that it WILL change the texture of items. It will breads, cakes, etc more dense.0 -
dsjsmom23: No I don't have access to a London Drug, thanks for the advise thou.0

csmccord: Thanks for all the useful info. Like I said I have never used protein powder so I did not realize that the unflavoured still had a flavour. I think I might try vanilla, a lot of my recipes call for vanilla extract. I also didn't think about the density, but that should be ok then I will eat less of them. :laugh:0

I am also in Canada - GNC has some good stuff, but I also tend to buy protein from bodybuilding.com when it's on sale. I've been using powder in place of about 1/3 of the flour the recipe calls for and so far that's keeping the texture pretty well. There is a cellucor whey protein flavor that's basically confetti cake batter, works really well for cake!0

Something else you may want to consider if you are making biscuits, pancakes or the like is Atkins baking mix. We've used it for biscuits before, and it's actually pretty good! Tastes very similar to the real thing. High in protein and fiber, however calories may be a bit of a concern. Probably not something for young "pouches" fresh out of surgery.0

Thanks for all your suggestions, I only bake in the fall and winter, but wanted to have all my bases over before the time came. Again many thanks. :flowerforyou:0
