  • I don't think I do either. I tolerate everything. Granted I have stayed away from sugar so a large amount might cause problems but I can eat fruit and other things and have no reaction. I just need to stay away from sugar! Dumping would help!

Our clinic warned us that the majority of people don't dump, so not to rely on it. From my experience talking with different WLS patient. The ones that want to dump don't and visa versa. Go figure. Good luck, but please don't try and push your limits it only leads to worse things further down the road. Speaking from my own experience that is. Good luck with your new life style change.

I am 2 years out from RNY and luckily I do dump if I get ahold of something with two much sugar so I still avoid it. Usually the surprise comes if I get ahold of a sauce with sugar like a BBQ or teryiaki so I avoid those. But to answer your question about what to choose as an alternative for stress eating, I assume sweets are your go to in this instance, I always have fruit on my counter. Grapes and bananas are my go to but now that it is summer and I live in an area where we are famous for our melons, I also always have watermelon and cantaloupe in the fridge. Other non craptastic options are sugar free pudding and jello and of course my fave which is quest bars.

Of course the best alternative is coming up with a non food item to deal with stress, take a walk, read a book, listen to your favorite music. Those are the easy ones. My go to for stress reduction is deep breathing. I don't full on meditate, but if I am completely overwhelmed and/or stressed out, 5 minutes of deep breathing focused ONLY on breathing really calms me down and helps me focus.

    Good Luck!!

Try to work on replacing stress food cravings and binges with non-food things. Exercise, walk, read books. Deal with the underlying situations and people that lead you down the bad, bad path.

Have a game plan, i.e., when I have this craving, I will not give into it. I will (1) drink 12 oz of water; (2) take a walk; (3) have a healthy snack that makes me feel proud about my good choices and eat that until I am full; (4) re-evaluate whether I really want that craved item, and if I still "have to "have it, eat only a bite (because you should not have room by now to eat more).

Train your brain. I know it sounds corny, but it works. What you do: Think good things when you eat good foods (I love this, I am awesome, This is really healthy, I am getting healthy, healthy foods taste so good and make me strong, etc.). Think bad things when you eat bad foods (This is horrible for me, this has no nutritional value, they make airplane parts out of these ingredients, this does not taste as good as i remember, this has a funny taste, my palate is better than this, I'd rather have [scallops, shrimp, steak, bacon, other protein, raw veggies, etc], and so on).

You have to exercise control over what goes into your mouth. It is challenging!!

    Good luck :)

So this could change. I didn't dump for a long time and now I do......sometimes. I had RNY in March of 2012. I'm down 180lbs and want to lose 30-40 more. Can I eat crappy food....short answer yes...sometimes....and sometimes I pay for it dearly with gas, diarrhea and lightheadedness. But none of those dumping symptoms started until about 8 months ago.

As far as cravings go, I have been known to buy (at like $3 for 6 oz) a clam shell of raspberries (fresh and obscenely expensive) and eat the entire thing to try to bust a craving for something else. It mostly works.

thank you all. I truly tried to avoid the sugar sigh. im going to try some of these other options. I never really noticed that when I quit smoking 3 years ago that I replaced my stress with sugar. since the surgery im really really watching and now im seeing it.

im going to work on some of these options and go to the store tommorow and pick up some fruit. we havent done much for groceries as we are moving very soon but I think I need to get some better alternatives in the house and tell my wife to get her craptastic stuff out of the house or hide it better lol.

Majority of people don't dump, its a misconception. I'm 4 years out and some days dump and others don't just depends on my pouch's mood for the day.

My first three months I "only" lost 64 pounds, so you are doing great.

I know it's not easy, but you need to kick the bad habits. It's harder at the beginning, but once you detox, it gets better.

You know what you need to do. You just need to find a way to do it.
