Hi everyone, my name is Erin I am from wisconsin , i am a mother, full time nursing student and I am trying to lose weight in hopes that I can postpon the onset of T1 diabetes. I have Hashimoto Thyroiditis. I developed a goiter, lost my hair, gained weight, and became very depressed and turned to food. I had no clue what was going on within my body until about a year ago. I am now working with and Endocrinologist, Family docotor, and soon to be a Dietisian... i am looking for friends who understand the struggle with a faulty thyroid. I would appreciate any advise also.

Pleased to meet you. Like all of us you have gone through the mill. I hope it will not be too long before you find the level of medication which works well for you, this can be time consuming job and can involve t3 as well as t4. Never be downcast there are others on here who have and are achieving. Weighing and logging your intake will set you up well being honest with yourself. I fear you may have made a typo with regard to the onset of diabetes, type 2 has an onset generally associated with diet, type 1 is genetic and you would have been born with it though it can seem to cause issues at an adolescent age. Which ever is your situation I am sure you will overcome it.

Not to be a stickler but to educate, but type 1 is autoimmune also and is what people with hashimotos develop because the pancreas is eaten away by the bodys own cells , just like the thyroid. Its part of the disease process.

thank you for that. Here we have recently been bombarded with the difference between type 1 and 2. Here the media ha been taken to task because of confusion and children with type 1 and adults being disparaged as if it were one in the same thing. "They" sufferers, seem to be wanting to differentiate between the persons perceived not to have eaten properly. What really matters is people get the correct treatment and they are not condemned for things they are powerless to change. Predominantly here in the UK the only permitted treatment is with t4 and that with pills with maize as fillers.

I too know what has undermined my thyroid function. This is salicylate, the stuff in aspirin which is also in many other vegetative origin foods because it is the method many plants use to protect themselves from moulds and mildews and some of us suffer with all manor of health issues from chronic fatigue, fibro, chemical sensitivity and of course diabetes of the other sort.

Lets hope we can all find good health and maintain it.

I've got Hashimoto's thyroiditis which has resulted in hypothyroidism. I've been living with it for about 5 years now and am on thyroid meds. It's always difficult to give other people advice as everyone's bodies are different and react differently to foods and exercise. I try to limit foods like soy, goitrogens and cruciferous vegetables as they’re supposed to slow down the thyroid function. However, there is so much conflicting information out there that it’s often difficult to know who or what to believe.

With regard to the Type 1 diabetes – I’ve heard of Type 1 diabetics being at risk of developing Hashimoto’s but not the other way round. But then again…too much conflicting information!

Hi Erin. I'm still new here but I see there are lots of people in the same boat with the Hashi. I'm 50 now but up until my 42nd bday I was always skinny, max 172 lbs which is ok for my height of over 5'8 and my bone density (I wore a US size 8 with that weight). Then I started gaining weight like crazy, losing hair and just feeling like crap most days.

I wasn't even diagnosed until 5 years later, which means by then I had gained over 50 lbs and I was just so depressed. The ultrasound returned non-specific nodules in both sides and they keep growing still. With the meds it's manageable though.

I've started my weightloss attempt on July 20th of this year by resolving to add more veggies and fruit to my diet regularly. No time for exercise (very demanding job with lots of overtime) but I have managed to lose 8 pounds up until now. What have I done? I replaced my breakfast with a veg/fruit smoothie with a newly acquired NutriBullet. Eating more nuts and seeds and watching my animal proteins. I feel great and am (so far) ok and confident I can reach my target of getting rid of these pesky 60 pounds by Christmas.

I have a piece of software that I use religiously every single day for every morsel that I eat. It's called CalorieKing. It does the job for me. The algorithm there suggest I reduce my calories to 1650 per day whereas this site says 1300. There is no way I can exist on 1300 calories! lol I'm sticking to the 1600 as it seems to work.

Like I said, I'm new to the forum so looking for weightloss buddies in the same boat as me. :)

    Hi welcome,
I have Hashimotos as well & am finding it very difficult to lose weight. I wasn't diagnosed for a number of years until i was in advanced stages, brain function was affected etc. My mother had Hashimotos & there are quite a few family members who also have it.
I was diagnosed 10 years ago & have been on Armour ever since, I was a size 8 now I'm a 14. I've stopped gaining weight but still have many of the symptoms. My meds are pretty perfect but I still get extremely exhausted & suffer many of the chronic symptoms, one feeling the cold, & not being able to generate much body heat, drives me nuts.

I have resigned myself to the situation but I havent given up on my weight, after being through the ropes. I now have a specialist, a doctor & a nutritionalist regularly monitoring my health, who all work together.

I have the dream of going back to a size 10, it probably won't be realised but that deosnt stop me from trying...NEVER EVER give up no matter what, yes it's frustrating & a long haul but hang in there.
