Hi, I'm new to this. I'm scheduled for a gastric bypass on Jan. 30. I've done a lot of preparing but I'm curious...
What is the one thing you wish you would have done or are really glad you did BEFORE the procedure?
Thanks everyone!

  • congrats! very exciting! these are random and don't know if they will help or what you are looking for:

-lowered my bed off of the lifts that it was on for easier getting in and out of bed... for a couple days i had to turn to my side then put my legs on the ground, then slide down the side of the bed a little to get out of bed!!!
-get all of your domestica out of the way.. i put fresh bedding on for when i returned from the hospital, vacuumed, etc. so when I came home everything was done and I could concentrate on healing
    - pack chapstick and gas-x in your hospital bag.. my lips were so dry, I was so glad i had it.. also the sooner you can get relief from the gas pressure the better you'll feel..it took a couple days for the gas pressure to ease for me.

    hope it helps a little!

I thought I was prepared and I wasn't as prepared as I thought I was. My surprise was that I couldn't get enough water in. Before surgery I drank the 36 - 48 oz each day for two weeks with no problem. After surgery I could only do a spoon at a time. I'll save you the calculation it wasn't enough, and I struggled.
Medications were an other problem cut up or smashed tasted nasty, wish I would have asked the Dr for liquid medications. Also ask your Dr about antacids and stool softener postoperative most of us need them. constipation is painful!

I wish I had purchased a stool softener (not a laxative) so I had that available when I needed it. I'm glad I had the ability to sleep inclined for a little while after surgery to help with the initial reflux. I'm glad I took 2 weeks off from work after the surgery just to get through my liquids stage and recover. Best wishes to you on your upcoming surgery.
