Big loss in first week?

Hi everyone! I'm new to this low carb lifestyle ... Like 4 days new. Haha. I have been doing great. Eating meats, lots of veggies, healthy fats (like avocado) and some fruits.
My question is that I just weighed myself for the week and I am down 6lbs from last Wednesday. Could this be right? It freaks me out! Haha. I feel like I don't want to record it because next week will be a big gain.

Depending how low your carbs are this is normal. When you don't take in enough carbs to replenish glycogen in your muscles and liver right away you flush out a lot of water. Glycogen can hold something like three times it's weight in water in your body. Most of the weight loss in the first week is water and will come back as soon as you eat more carbs. The true fat loss is a slower process.0

Interesting. I started LCHF on Jan 19 and lost four pounds from the 19 - 28 . From 28 to today I only lost 1 pound. So that last pound took a week to lose. Perhaps now I'm losing fat?

Ah, the scale gods arise again. There is the response that empty fat cells collect water and while fat is gone, weight is retained. My question is this. Which weighs more, fat or water? Also how much does fat actually weigh?
The response is this: ditch the scale. Believe in the process and read as much as you can on the subject.0 -
Very normal to have a big loss in the first week, I think I lost 7 or 9 pounds when I first started. I agree with annieboomboom its best to focus on finding your go-to low carb meals and reading about the science behind low carb (fascinating). Although I did check in with the scale after a couple of days of trying a new food or restaurant to make sure what I was adding didn't stall me.0

RenaTX you've probably been losing fat all along, I didn't mean to imply it's strictly water loss in the first week. You lose some fat but you also pee out a ton of liquid the first week or two. This applies mostly to ketogenic diets. I'm less informed about the metabolic changes associated with higher end low-carb diets. 1 to 2 lbs of weight loss per week is what most people aim for. I've been losing about 1.8 lbs - 2 lbs per week.

Cool! I am under the impression it maybe fat. I'm really surprised but a shirt I had which was a bit snug is now comfortable. 5 pounds seems to have helped.

Shawna that first big loss in the first week to 10 days is the most important loss.
It means you are on the road to success at getting into nutritional ketosis because you have been initially successful at cutting the carbs. Some never cut the carbs to <50 grams so it never happens for them.
I lost 10 pounds in the first two weeks and not even one pound for the next six weeks BUT I was losing inches the entire time but the scales seemed stuck.
Now four months into Low Carb High Fat eating lifestyle I a very glad I to the leap to LCHF. Yes I still have uninformed people who state one will die if one does not eat carbs. Keep up the good work. There is some learning curve or was in my case because of all the hidden sugar and other types of carbs.

Thank you GaleHawkins! I am not counting carbs or anything really right now, just not eating the "obvious" ones. Im pretty clueless when it comes to counting carbs. I am kind of relying on MFP food diary to give me an idea of the foods that have more carbs and where I can cut back further. I know, especially because I am diabetic, that I need carbs - but I want to get those mostly from veggies. I hope I am on the right track. Its sure making a difference in my blood sugar!0

I've been on it 6 days and been very strict with it and also exercising 6x a week for the past 2 weeks and I got on the scale for the first time today and I've lost 1 lb. I'm so disappointed but I'm not giving up.0

I lost 6 pounds my first week and 1 or 2 pounds the following weeks - I'm only 5 weeks in though. Was hoping the weight would continue to come off at the rate of 6 pounds a week, but unfortunately not!0

One ml of water weighs one gram. Not sure about fat as a fat cell can grow big with fat. When you use up all the glycogen stored in muscles and the liver- water naturally goes with it. Fat burning=fat loss=exhaled ( CO2) and pee( H2O). I watched a cool video that answered the question of where fat goes, and how the "weight" of it leaves the body- CO2 and water.

You can also start with a basic observation that most liquid oils will float on water. They may have a higher viscosity and appear "thicker" but that does not equal a higher mass density.0

These have been my weekly losses during this WOE. So yes, a big loss in week 1. I would also have a smaller loss during weeks related to my cycle, and then make up for it the next week. So many factors that come into play! And while carbs count, calories do too.
