I have degenerative disk and joint disease, pinched nerve root and spinal stenosis in my lumbar and neck. Walking hurts like hell so does sitting or standing for more than 15-20min at a time.

This has caused neuropathy in my hands and feet, as well is weakness in muscles and limited my range of motion.

What exercises can I do to help lose weight. I have lost close to 50lbs in the last year, but now hovering around 270's still.

Any suggestions greatly appreciated.

Is a program like water aerobics available to you?

Hmm not sure, didn't think about that. Would ease pressure on compressed disks and add resistance . Thanks hopefully I can find something that's cheap. As of right now I only receive $385.00 a month.

Sorry, can't really offer a better solution than that from KeithF6250 but wanted to encourage you.

Thanks, I talked to YMCA they have water aerobics, tai chi for diabetics, silver shoes, and offer scholarships for low-income. Will go tomorrow to check it out.

Let us know how it goes at the YMCA! My mom has had serious back pain since I was a kid. She is also diabetic and doesn't exercise much. I do think the swimming would be easiest on your back.

I think so too, mid waist deep relieves approx 50% load off lower back, chest/shoulder deep 75%. I won't have $ till end of month but will know if I get discount before then. Even 50% will lower monthly cost to around $20 a small price to pay for my health.

Wish I could get some relief from pain, but orthopedic surgeon highly advised against surgery due to medical history, primary Dr highly advised against cortical steroid injections due to diabetes, and my pain meds don't work , maybe taking 25% of the pain away.

I feel for you, Aarch. I have DDD and spinal stenosis too. Fortunately they were able to do surgery that relieved the pain, at least for now, but the months leading up to that were total agony. I hope you can get into the water classes.and find some relief.

Are you getting SSDI and Medicare? Often the "Y" is free with many of the plans available for Medicare recipients through Silver Sneakers.

Even if the water aerobics is a bit too strenuous for you to start out, you can tread water, walk up and down the pool, put on a flotation belt and "jog" a little, etc. I take a water aerobics class and we have many disabled in the class or who use the warm water pool for exercises while we are in the class. It is not unusual to see a couple of walkers, canes, or wheelchairs next to the pool.

If you go to the "Y", ask if they have a free consultation with a personal trainer who is familiar with water-based exercise. Many do offer something like that as part of their new membership package.

Good luck! I love my water exercise.

Applied for ssid, was denied, found a disability advocate, they said I should have been approved so re-applied

They only work disability cases and are non profit, they only get paid if we win, and since its their only income source just their taking my case shows promise.

Look up chair exercises and whatever you cant/aren't able to do, customize it to fit your needs.
For example, if youre viewing someone jogging or running in place, instead do air biking...just be creative and stay moving throughout the video!

That is great. Good luck with that. The income helps but, for me, the medicare is priceless.

Medicaid has been a godsend, 1 pack of my Levemir Insulin pens run $435.00 my monthly income is $385.00. Plus my other pills? Never would make it without it.
