Hey everyone,
Sara and I may have an opportunity to interview Eric Helms.
We would be doing this on behalf of the community here on our ETP page, so we'd like you to please reply to this message with one or two questions.
Sara and I will then pick and choose from the replies along with some questions we may think of.
Thanks,
Patrick

In......for another threeway!0

Does he like Sara's pants? That is a great one to ask.0

Would it be a waste of time to gather some of the more common questions that get asked on MFP in order to have a reference to give to people (versus multiple links)?

Any data or thoughts re: muscle building on ~50% of the body during injury/surgery recovery that limits the other half of the body.
... for 41 year old guys. ;-)0 -
I'd vote for how to continue to improve while injured. It is hard to rest half a body.0

I actually think he's going to LOL when I ask him the injury question. Eric has been teaching/consulting me for several months now and I've probably set a record for random injuries/mishaps/oddities so this question coming from me will probably get a good laugh.0

 So if you ask this question he'll be all - "Oh? "Someone" wants to know about working while injured? Mmhmm."0 -
How often are mental blocks the main reason for a client's lack of progression/development? By that I'm thinking of factors like self-doubt, perhaps some excuses, fear of performing badly, and so on.0

What an amazing opportunity for the 2 of us.
I would love to submit a question or 2 but I'd be embarrassed to sound dumb. I think I'll just sit in the corner and watch.
Don't be silly my dude.
Post a question. You won't sound dumb. Sara sat there twirling her hair and talking about her low cut top in our last chat with him.
By comparison you're going to sound like Einstein.

Thoughts on occlusion training and the literature that supports it ( I haven't read all of the literature, only a few recaps on articles pertaining to it ).
If beneficial:- Under what circumstances?
- How one would go out of implementing it into a programming?
I know I've seen Berto use it in a few videos.0 -

Unfortunately, there is some truth to this....

I was thinking training only, strength training more specifically (heavy weights), but when reflecting on it just now it would be even more interesting if replying separately on all three versions, then comparing them to see whether there are groups of clients forming.
It isn't "research", but on the other hand personal experience fine-tunes many things in life and in a case such as this can help a person with potential become an excellent coach/consultant/other position working with people (not referring to Helms now, but in general).
By personal experience I'm thinking of stuff such as reading body language, having intuition, listening well and adapting to information received, and so on, because what a client can verbally share might be completely contradicted by what/how they actually deliver when working with the coach.
Anyway, even if this is too complicated or uninteresting or something, it made me think so thank you for thatI'm passionate about the mind-body connection, I should add.

aaaand the comments turn into a debate on pot smoking.
oh Internet, never change.0 -
Along the lines of the mental blocks question.
What do you see in a person that has usually been an accurate give-away that their dedication and excitement to initial training plan just realistically isn't going to last very long?
This can be what shows up in first couple weeks, to initial consult perhaps.
And if you see it going that way (lack of hitting workouts, ect), do you have planned change to training to keep it realistic for them?
Curious if some pointers that people could see in themselves too.0 -
Everyone knows the "big three" are squats, deads, and bench. After that lifting professionals tend to branch out on what are considered major lifts. What are your "next big three" (e.g. military press, clean and press, etc.)?
In the same light, what are your ancillary three that the "big three" don't work as much as they could (e.g bicep curls, calf raises, etc.). (Or two, or four, or whatever)
=============================
What would you recommend for someone who can only get one "real" workout in a week, but capable of doing smaller 10-30 minute "no sweat" mini-workouts throughout their day?
=============================
A lack of the requisite 6-8 hours of nightly sleep can inhibit HGH and increase cortisol. Both are detrimental to proper bodybuilding. In instances where someone simply can't get the sleep they need are there methods you can reverse the HGH/cortisol effects caused by a lack of sleep?0 -
Hey Jeremy, good to see you around on the forums. Regarding your second question about 10-30 minute workouts can you include goals and perhaps training experience to provide a very general context? Only asking because knowing Eric he's going to want some context to answer that question.
Hope you're doing well sir.0 -
Seconded on the occlusion training and thoughts on its use.0
-
I would like to hear his thoughts on running a strength program during a cut when your primary goal is hypertrophy. The obvious strategy being to improve stimulus for muscle growth following the cut.0

I'm doing as well as can be expected with working two jobs still. I just don't get much time to forum surf. Winter break has afforded me some free time.
I'm currently doing standard lifters exercises; squats, deadlifts, bench (not well since I keep having shoulder issues), military press/OHP, rows of varying colors, and all the various other strength gaining and hypertrophic exercises. Or, in short: Gainz.
You know me. You know the exercises I was doing under your training. I'm doing the same exercises for the most part with a few added and a few taken away. This is what, about a year and a half now since you introduced me to a barbell? If you want to see what I've been doing to pass the time I track on fitocracy under the same name.0 -

Yes, this will still happen. We are likely to talk to him next week when Sara is here visiting me.0

@SideSteel @Sarauk2sf if it is still on I would like to know his thoughts on nutrient partitioning during a bulk when it comes to someone beginning a bulk at a 10-12% bf compared to those that want to bulk when they are already 15-20% bf. I'm in the 10-12% camp.
That's a good question. The old p-ratio and such. I've started all of my bulks around 15%. And I get really fat. But I can't be bothered to get leaner than that. Ho hum, such is the life of a fat powerlifter.
