Do I have Too Much Time on My Hands?

When I started this diet last summer, I totally cleaned out my kitchen of all the "Carbage". I literally threw out about 80 lbs of food. Brand new packages of flour, sugar, jars of jelly. I realized that since I was a "carboholic" it wasn't useful for that stuff to be in my house, no more so than an Alcoholic would have a pantry full of liquor.

So I had the usual canisters with corn meal, sugar and white flour. I dumped the contents out and washed them. Yesterday I was reorganizing my kitchen and thought I would use the containers for my new additions, like, Almond flour, Flax seed meal, etc.

Now that we are in the digital age, I thought, if I put this stuff in the containers, how will I log them with MFP? I am a big user of doing it with my iPhone where you scan the bar code. So I cut the label and taped them on the container. Now I can scan it, see how many grams per serving, brand name, its all there. Here is a pic:

I hope this helps,

That's actually a good idea with all of MPF's various entry errors especially to check against the actual label. I would say that's actually quite crafty of you, Dan! lol

You could tape them to the outside of your container and then it wouldnt matter if they were clear or not.

That is awesome!! What a great idea! I wish id thought of that, I might have to do that from now on.

Altho i hope when you say you threw out all the new jars of food you meant you donated them to a food pantry. People with little to eat will gladly eat carbs. Just an idea.

Such a great thing! I only wish I could "share" foods and recipes with my husband so he doesn't end up struggling. Or me checking his logs and correcting them.

Sounds like awesome work to me Dan - great idea!

[Edit re my question below - har har, just found out I have to use the rear-facing camera, not the front face of my phone!]

And *how* do you scan the barcode? I just downloaded the phone app today and have tried it on 2 products (1 native to Australia, then one universal) and I can't get a result! The green line shows across the 'waist' of my phone and it says to put the barcode in the rectangle. What rectangle? I've tried having the barcode across the green line, above the line, below the line, turning the phone sideways, having the barcode close or far away, checked it has good lighting but it will *not* take a reading. Maybe it's American products only? Ggrrrrr ;)

I am one of the dozens who own a windows phone. Am crossing my fingers that there's an app. :) The other thing I do is put the carton/bag straight into the see through container so that I can see the nutritional info.

I hadn't thought of that, but honestly, I don't have much space to store anything on my counter, and I don't have any LCHF things like this yet in my pantry, and I don't know how easy it would be to do this, but as I get my pantry "converted" as much as I can for having a fiance who still loves his baked goods, sweet and savory...lol, I will definitely move this direction!

OK, I'm not sure about other phones, but this I do know, get the camera close enough to have the barcode big enough. You must hold the camera steady enough for it to focus, and there must be enough light. A darkened room will not work. On my app, you can have the barcode at ANY angle and it will read it.

Here is a pic from my phone just before it read the barcode:

It was too far away. As soon as I brought it closer, it picked it up.

I would imagine that barcodes are a world wide standard. So you should be able to scan down under.

Because of my hormone imbalances we've moved away from plastic containers for storing anything food related. So I use canning jars, the quart canning jars, for all my storage needs. Then I've labeled them with a label maker, altho I wasnt as smart as Dan the Man and didnt put the barcodes on them. But that's how its all stored in my cupboard.

    1. They are all uniform size and shape so they stack and fit well in the cupboard and the lids are interchangeable if needed.
    2. Perfect for my ocd since all my jars look the same in size, shape, etc

This is sincerely awesome. So far I'm just keeping all the glass jars as they come across my counter. Once I have some money to get my kitchen up to scruff, I'll be getting another immersion blender (no idea what happened to my old one), a better food processor (mine is archaic), a decent blender for pureeing (my fiance is killing my old one), lots of goodies to help organize and fill my pantry with all the good stuff, and definitely some cast iron! So I kind of have a kitchen wish list going, but I have a lot of bill, etc. catching up to do first!

Actually, if you are friends with your hubs (hehe), as long as one of you logs a food or meal, the other can go to their diary and copy. It helps TREMENDOUSLY!

@DittoDan‌, this is a fantastic idea, thank you!
