Wondering who is here due to diabetes/pre diabetes/insulin resistance and using LCHF or keto to control your blood sugar ( and lose weight)? This groups is much more active than the pre diabetes group and I'd like more MFP friends who are in this due to these reasons, and/or maybe starting a check-in thread here if there isn't already one?. Thanks!

T2D here. I am LCHF. You are welcome to friend me but fair warning my diary is a bit up and down due to some experimentation lately.

Thanks Sugarbeat! My diary is as well, so I actually am interested in seeing " experimentation" and it's results, as I've toyed with the Newcastle Diet concept for the short term. I'm not sure I've landed on one firm approach yet.

I'm in both groups due to insulin resistance and my stated goal to reduce and get off metformin. I'm trying to lower my carbs and eliminate processed foods. Not ready to commit to lchf yet but am learning more about it through this group. Will discuss with my doc first ...who has long urged me to watch my carb intake.

I have PCOS and insulin resistance. I started on metformin a number of years ago to get my insulin down, but only after starting LCHF (just under 2.5 years ago) did I really get my insulin under control, and also have lost weight (92 lbs. as of today). I am still on metformin and do not intend to go off anytime soon as I believe it has many benefits. Last time it was checked my A1C was 4.9. In addition, the entire reason I started eating low carb was because of DH's type 2 diabetes diagnosis. That was a real wakeup call for both of us. He also eats this way and has lost a lot of weight too (around 100 lbs. so far). He takes a small dose of metformin and his doctor says his diabetes is "in remission". Apparently she sees all of her other diabetic patients every three months and last time he went she said he didn't have to come back for a year....but the scheduling staff thought that was highly unusual for a diabetic patient so they scheduled him for a 6 month followup.

I don't know for sure as haven't had tests, but I strongly suspect I was/am insulin resistant before Finding lchf. Used to have problems sleeping, waking up sweating, heart thumping. My blood pressure was also high. Feeling much better on lchf. Hope you do too. Only 2 months in, but feel free to friend me if you like.

I also have IR and PCOS. I am on Met and Inositol to help the IR and i try to keep to a LCHF diet/keto because i feel a difference and can lose weight that way.

The family doesnt always help here, and because I am sometimes bedridden, like I have been the last week and a half, they cook for me and it isnt always LCHF :'(

But last I went to the doctor my A1C was spot on and my blood glucose was also smack dab in the middle of normal, just my insulin is wacky and very high. It is getting better with met and inositol but slowly.

Something like 1 in 4 Americans are IR, so you'll have lots of company. :)

Good news: Low carb will probably improve your numbers. I tried it 10 years ago just for that experiment. It worked well.

Bad news: It probably won't cure you. Studies suggest that IR and IS folks are different. Probably genetic. Our fat distribution is different -- more more visceral fat. Not all overweight/obese are IR.

Anyway, I'm shooting for a long-term fix this time around. Which means I need to keep carbs in check and the weight off -- always.

Pre-diabetes, I could get a diagnosis if I engineered to do so but would rather fix it myself.

I am diabetic (over a dozen years), metabolic syndrome, morbidly obese (not any more), insulin resistant.

Instead on me reciting everything about me in this post, I already documented it in my blogs.

    DittoDan's Keto Blogs

At the bottom of each blog is a link to the next blog. They aren't long and if you are in this condition (or approaching it), my blogs will profit you.

    I hope this helps,

I'm type 2 diabetic. I had my diabetes under control on a standard diet (3 A1C's in a row at or below 5.5 without taking any meds), but it was a nightmare to maintain. Low Carb (keto specifically for me) has given me even better control in a fashion that is so much easier to maintain.

Someone else might have a better explanation than I do but this is what Ive read.

IR is where your cells dont recognize the insulin you produce in your pancreas and so asks your pancreas to produce more, which it doesnt recognize and so asks for even more. Eventually, your pancreas has had enough and gives up. It stops making so much insulin, which makes you diabetic because you often have to supplement your insulin after your pancreas stops making it. Eventually you may become entirely insulin dependent which means your body produces NO insulin on its own.

IR often has no affect on blood sugar until it starts into diabetes levels. Which is the oddest part of the whole thing to me. My glucose and A1C are like spot on normal but my insulin, when not on Met or Inositol, is thru the roof!

IR, like Diabetes, can be sent into remission thru diet and meds like Metformin but cannot be cured. Once you have it, you always do. So it is important to make sure you do what you have to to fix the IR before your pancreas decides it has had enough.

Type 2 here. Diagnosed last year, but probably had it a lot longer. Low-carb (40-50g per day on average) diet, exercise, and Metformin. From May '14 to February '15, got my A1C down from 10.6 to 6.7. Pretty much maxed out on what I could with just diet and exercise alone. Doctor increased the Metformin dosage about 10 days ago, and I'm already getting much better numbers. Guessing it's a case of leaky liver overwhelming my system with excess sugar. Hoping to get it under control without moving to the next steps (a sulfonyurea medication or insulin). We'll see how my A1C is in May.

Diabetes is the presence of elevated blood sugar levels. This may be in part due to insulin resistance, eg in Type 2 diabetes, but can also be due to the complete lack of insulin production seen in Type 1 diabetes.

T2D here. I started getting serious about LC back in December of last year. As of last month my A1C was down to 6.9 (lowest A1C in 10 years). I'm currently off my long acting insulin and have cut my metformin dosage in half. If I keep my carbs between 20 - 30g, my BG numbers are always in normal range, AND, I've lost 20 lbs to boot! A win-win for me

Wabmester, how did you get a hold of my chart? ;) That top line is what I was like pre-keto.

Here are the meds I was taking before I started the diet Aug 29th, 2014. I started the diet at 314 lbs. Now, just under 250. My goal would be under 200:

    Glipizide 10mg @ 2X day
    Metformin 850mg@ 2X day
Lantus fast acting insulin at each meal, usually 40 to 60 units @ meal
Solastar slow acting insulin @ bedtime 40 to 50 units
Losartan 1X day for high blood pressure
Simvastatin 1X day for high cholesterol
    Advair for seasonal asthma
    Vitamin D2 50,000 units 1X week
    Asparin

Fast forward to today. Here is my med scheme now:

    Metformin 850mg @ 2X day
Magnesium Citrate 800 mg @‌ day

My glucose is still above normal, but not as high as pre-diabetic. I don't check as often as I used to. My Hc1a was 7.9 a few months ago, but that was due to me quitting the long term insulin too quickly. I may get all my blood tests in the next couple of weeks, I am hoping for it to be under 7.0. If I lose more weight, I am hoping to end the metformin.

For all you diabetics, watch this 16 minute video is what lead me (eventually) to finding the Ketogenic diet. It is a TedTalk Med. Even though he says nothing about the Ketogenic diet, it is on his personal website. It is very heart warming, (be sure to have some Kleenex handy). Make sure to watch it to the end:

What If We're Wrong about Diabetes? Peter Attia

You'll probably want to forward that video to all your skinny friends & family, so they can get off your case.

    I hope this helps,
