High blood sugar and cholesterol

Good morning! Rookie and newbie here...

I had fasting blood sugar and cholesterol blood work this week at my fertility specialist and was shocked that both are very high. (Blood sugar - 151 and cholesterol - 259). I'm shocked because just 5 months ago my blood sugar was 91 and cholesterol 154. However, the night before my fasting blood sugar, I had poor food like a chocolate covered banana (I wasn't aware I was getting my blood drawn the next morning).

Anyhoo, my fertility specialist wants me to see my primary care physician for treatment and will not move forward with our fertility treatment. I'm scared. I have a family history of diabetes and I'm significantly overweight. I've been fighting my family genes and was hoping to avoid a diabetes diagnosis for at least another 10 years (I'm 34). Does anyone have experience with blood sugar jumping that high in a short amount of time? (Dumb question - I know it can be all over the place in one day) Did one high fasting blood sugar number eventually lead to a diabetes diagnosis or could I work to lower my numbers with diet/exercise (which I am doing - hence why I'm here) before going to my primary doctor?

I guess I'm just looking for other experiences to help ease my mind before seeing my physician. I'm frustrated.

Thanks

If it's a one time reading with a history of lower readings, the prudent course would seem to be repeating the test. Was an A1C test done? Instead of being a snapshot which can vary a lot, it gives a picture of what has happened over the past 90 days. If you have a reasonable relationship with your primary, you should be able to get orders for lab work over the phone.

That said, with family history and extra pounds, 34 isn't too young to make a course correction.

Thanks, Keith. She did not do an A1C since it was my fertility specialist and not a GP. I didn't anticipate a high reading, but once it came back so high, she wants me to go back to my GP for follow-up. I'm hesitant to see my GP because I don't want the diabetes diagnosis in my medical record right now due to our fertility treatments and potentially going through the adoption process in the near future.

I am thinking about waiting 3 months to see my GP in hopes that I can make lifestyle changes before the more blood work since my fasting blood sugar is typically 90-91.

OK, there is one other route to get some info. Home glucose test meters are not very expensive. If you picked one up at Walmart or a drug store you could get some base line results both fasting and 2 hour post meals. You will probably find that a carb heavy meal will spike your glucose. Many people find that cutting carbs will help with both weight loss and glucose control. I've lost a bit over 50 lbs and so far managing T2 without drugs so it can be done.

You can get a lot of good info here:

There is also a group here
    http://community.myfitnesspal.com/en/group/394-low-carber-daily-forum-the-lcd-group
which is focused on low carb. I don't advocate any particular diet but I do try to get as much information as possible.

I'm pretty sure I even saw an over the counter A1C test at Walmart the other day. As others stated it will give you a much better idea if this is a real developing issue or a simple 'blip'. If your A1C is below 6.5% GP will probably tell you just to watch weight, or maybe say you are 'pre-diabetic'.

If you are trying to avoid the 'official diagnosis' I suggest 1) Lower Carb approach to weight loss, 2) Exercise (good for lowering blood sugar aside from weight loss benefits), 3) Folk remedy of 2 tablespoons daily of Unfiltered Apple Cider Vinegar 'with the mother'.

Good info stephenrhinton. I don't know what is in my local store but on-line they have several A1C test kits. One is a 2 sample kit for $22.88.

I'm kind of new here and I posted on my profile about my diabetes. I was in insulin and pills and recently lost 13lbs(on my doctors scale). Point is, now off insulin!!! I couldn't believe even 13 lbs made a big difference. I agree with the suggestions given. You can do this. You really need that A1C to see where your at. Your BS could of been high because you weren't fasting.
I have many patients at work who are not diagnosed with diabetes yet at times their bs is over 150. Plus, losing weight and getting excerise will help you lower your numbers. You got this!!

I assume you Test was done during a routine blood draw. If it was done with a finger prick and meter I would requested a second test on a different finger. I have had differences of over thirty points on different fingers just a minute a part.
