Liquor/wine and long acting insulin?

Does anyone have experience trying small quantities of wine or liquor with long acting insulin? My patient guide says to not mix the two, which I haven't yet. Is this just a really bad idea, or is it possible?

The issue with mixing the two is that alcohol present in your system keeps your liver from releasing glucose into your bloodstream, as it does normally when your blood sugar drops. The combination of insulin and alcohol, therefore, can cause your glucose to go lower than is safe. You will have to evaluate that risk for yourself. If you are also taking the drug metformin, this effect is increased. The combination of metformin, insulin and alcohol is pretty much a no-no.
