John, great post! Very informative. I've already had an idea of TM, talked to people who had done it and I am not interested in it due to my various ailment: reading yours really confirm that it's not something that I'm willing to attempt. Not that I think it isn't fun or challenging. Just not worth me getting hurt. Heck my knee slips out when it's tuned the wrong way and it'll completely dislocate in certain situations. So will my shoulder. But I will still have fun watching and cheering you guys on!
Kelly, yep scale is just a number. It's about how you are feeling and fitting in clothes. Have you been taking measurement or progress pictures?
The other day I was getting ready to go out, I've already styled my hair but I didn't have time to do my make up and that usually meant that I will do it on the way. Well, that day I decided not to put my face on and I felt great! Confident as ever. Prior to that I always think that I won't look "as nice" without makeup and a lot of women fall into that trap. This is about self acceptance and loving what you see in the mirror. I still like makeup because they are fun for me but I won't be putting it on because I think it will make me look better. When I use it, it'll be because I feel like it.
Heron, I completely understand what you're saying about 'putting your face on'. I used to try to wear makeup every day but I got tired of it and now it's a 'special occasion' type of thing. I guess I look halfway decent without it (don't ask John or Carol though, they may tell the truth - hehehe). Self acceptance is a huge thing and it took me some time to get to that point. I figure if somebody doesn't like how I look, it's on them, not me. I like me and how I look. Great to see that you're feeling that way as well.
Oh I know you're not participating in Vegas but I am sooooooooo excited that you and Arturo will be there to cheer us on.

Time for a new scale and to remember that how my clothes feel and how loose they are getting is a better gauge tool than the scale!
Oh and again Kelly, congratulations! Doing the Whole30 has me obviously avoiding the scale, which for me is a GOOD thing. I have obsessed over the scale for quite some time and I really don't want to anymore. I'm not sure if I will even step on it after I complete the 30 days. We'll see. I might need that 'reference point' but I know I will be using my clothes as a barometer instead of that one number.

Oh John! What a wonderful recap of the day!! I CAN'T WAIT to do a wrap up show with all of you guys. Jen is working on some footage so you can see some of what happened. That, along with John's recap is a fantastic summary of the events.
Kelly: Rock on! No Sweetie, I would not complain about the loss and all you "gained" by ditching that scale for a while. You are fantastic and inspiring to me. I am not missing my scale for this W30 either.
Heron: I keep wanting to talk you into the Tough Mudder but after reading about John's knees and hearing about yours, you are making a good decision. I STILL THINK you would be FINE. In fact, we are going to map out the course in Vegas and walk around those mud miles for folks who would have knee issues. (Same distance but not as much issues for knees.) But Jen will have some great advice on how to be a spectator. We learned a LOT. You and Arturo are thankfully going to be official photographers and we will do our best to get you lots of course access. (We let Jen down on that) So by seeing it all from the inside, you can decide if you want to do a future one with us.
FINALLY posted the Ben Greenfield show today. It is short but packed with info! Heron: he talks about salivary excretion being different for folks of Pacific Islander decent and that being a factor for carb-breakdown. Fascinating! Didn't have time to reflect on the show… life is INSANE. But I just had to post it to get you guys thinking and we can all debrief here.
Mark: Great to see you and Yes, inspiring post by John, right?
TJ: Of COURSE you were a boy scout. You're such good people! And can't remember which guy got my beer. Anyone who wanted it. I was so spent!
Much LOVE people!!0 -
Carol I think I might be fine with certain courses. I've never seen on up close so who knows maybe Vegas won't be "as muddy" lol have you ever done a TM in CA?
Jen, thanks for your comment! Very encouraging! As for using clothes as a barometer I second that! I use the scale but I'm not really that bothered by the number but I also have a form fitting dress and a pair of jeans that use I use as a barometer.
I am super super excited to meet you all!0 -
Oh I got sidetracked.. I just realized that since I spend so much time in the kitchen prepping things I can easily incorporate standing exercise when I'm not holding a knife of course lol. So here I am in the kitchen typing this and doing leg raises while staring at the big bucket of lemon balm that I had harvested that is going to be turned into tinctures.0

Heron - I have neem taking measurement and for now that has stalled. But clothes are getting too big again. I just remind myself that I am getting healthy and where I level off is where I am meant to be!0

Such a healthy mindset!!0 -
Good morning everybody. Thursday but unfortunately it's not my last day of work this week. I took Monday off to recover from the weekend's activities. So I'll be working tomorrow. Oh well.
Good show Carol, despite the numerous issues you had getting Ben interviewed. He was quite the sport, especially when you and Caroline 'tackled' him at PaleoFX. Great pictures, BTW.
Oh Carol, you didn't let me down The volunteers didn't know what was going on. We all learned something from Chicago that we can take to Vegas. We'll make sure we have a map of the course so we know where we can see Heron & Arturo (and any others who are going to join us). Hopefully they can get more course access (or at least have a much better spectator trail) so there will be more footage of the Gun Runners tackling the obstacles. Chicago's was very poor, in my opinion. The spectator trail basically let you see maybe 10 obstacles (and probably 6 of those were near the finish line). Perhaps that is the norm or just the way the course was laid out in Chicago. As a participant, I would think not having your support folks there for such a bit part of the event would be a bit rough (Carol/John?) I know as a spectator, it was difficult to know what was going on and the waiting game wasn't fun. Again, looking at the course map and communicating the strategy for both participants and spectators is key.
I'm researching shoes and clothing for Vegas. I know I'll need some new shoes but most of the rest I should have. But I am also looking for some purple 'accents' because well, I'm going to do this right! Hehehe...
Ok, enough Mudder discussion. Whole30 progressing. Did notice myself a little hungry yesterday before lunch, so I guess I didn't eat enough at breakfast. I'll add a little bit this morning and see how that works. Speaking of which, time to go get some breakfast.

Happy Thursday Folks! Back to work today, it will be good to get the rest.
Carol Great job with difficult circumstances on the Pod Cast. Thanks again for trying to reach out on the Tobacco stuff.
Heron one other note, The right shoes MAY make a big difference. Soccer or Baseball cleats may be a wise choice. I will be doing some testing in the coming months, will let everyone know what I find.
All Righty then have a happy day.

Tough mudder sounds like a blast! I can't wait for my next run n gun.
It's crazy how much weight you can put on in 3 weeks of not caring.... oh well.0 -

it is Kevin. Try 3 or 4 months of not caring.

Carol, great show! Learned new things. Good questions!! I like the clarification on fruits.
It's too bad that the recording of TJ and you got deleted.
And I appreciate you doing these podcast even though you are insanely busy! Keep up the good work! But try to rest and sleep more as well.
John, let me know how the shoe testing goes.
Why soccer or baseball shoes? Is it because of the cleats? Or whatever those soles are called? I notice Ben Greenfield wears Vibrams. Which is what I wear, that and minimalist shoes.
Jen good for you researching clothes, they are very important. Here are my suggestion from a sports clothes perspective not TM. I cannot emphasize how important it is to get a good sports bra. Go to a REI or a running store and ask for high impact bras. Then go into to the dressing and jump up and down. I mean really jump. There are 2 types compression and encapsulating. C cup and smaller can get away with compression. Anything bigger you gotta get encapsulating one. Some well endowed women would wear the encapsulation and a compression over it for added support. For the top I like under armor compression tops. They wick away moisture dries fast. I buy men's top because I have wide shoulders and long torso. I kinda have the hulk look when I try on women's compression tops because they turn into a crop top and the shoulders and arms are too small even in a larger size. However depending on your sweat level synthetic material can sometimes traps odor. If I know that I'm doing an activities that is going to cause a lot of sweat, I wear my silk blend or smartwool sports top. They wick, dries fast and don't smell but it's not as compressed as the synthetics. Same goes for pants. Get smartwool socks. They have thin ones or my preferred socks Injinji toe socks. There are no seams and because your toes are not confined in the traditional sock you get more stability, lower the risks of blisters. Oh the Duluth panties are great, even though you'll be wet a lot you don't want to wear undies that hold water. Go to a store, try on different brands and style know your measurements for chest and length and you can shop online for the best price. I find lots of good deal on EBay, clymb and REI used gear sale. It's when they sell return stuff for cheap and sometimes dirt cheap. Most of them are new, never used. I always chuckle when I read some of the reason for returns.0 -
Damn it. The mobile safari if I leave to look at another app, I lose everything I've typed. Just lost a long reply. Bottom line I agree with Heron on sports bras, injinji sock ( wear all the time) and minimal /vibram which I also wear nearly everyday ( more minimal Vivobarefoot vs vibrams which on pavement are tough for distance). Went to chrome to grab link to Vivobarefoot shoe that I love and lost post. Nice amount of tread, lightweight, shed water. Mine are even purple, Jen.

And I did a big couple of paragraphs on a slow (as in months ) transition to minimal shoes. I think they make your whole body alignment better. But you will injury yourself if you go from big support cushiony shoes to minimal. Start by goiarefoot n your house as much as possible. But seriously it takes months and some alignment work. You need to get your feet muscles and structure developed. Not to mention knees, hips and every other piece of your body aligned. All those positive heel, heavily cushioned, supportive shoes (or high heels) have done years and years of damage to your muscles, joints, and fascia. It takes a long time to correct.0 -
Thanks for all the great info Heron. I had to laugh about the high impact bras. I have NOTHING up top to even worry about. I'll definitely be searching around for things in the next few weeks. I have wider shoulders as well.

Oh and loved the Ben Greenfield podcast. Great job piecing it together and more importantly being persistent in getting it done Carol. Love his only sit when eating rule. Not sure I could quite do that, but is similar to my no sitting in airports unless eating ( not drinking) in airports rule. Also appreciated how well he explained fruit / fructose response in there. So many people do not realize both how quickly fruit is turned to fat. And how it is different than many other carbs if doing carbnite or other protocols designed to spike insulin. If you think about it most fruits are naturally only around from late spring to fall...in a out in the wild evolutionary world, we would have come out of winter very lean almost starved. Would need to replace body fat in spring (berries and other lower sugar fruit) but by fall when we'd be going into winter/ low food/ slow movement hibernation almost that the high fructose, good fat building fruits like apples and pears would be available. Now we can eat all those all year long, in huge quantities...(and somehow equate them in health benefits to vegetables which they are NoT). Then wonder why we get fat.
Liked his opinions on carbs for fat loss ( basically you earn them....if sednetary 10% of calories from carbs, higher up to 30% on days with more gym gone depleting workouts- like met cons and heavy lifting, cardio is not steady state heavy glycogen depleting).
Oh and how he explains to his kids about carb brain fog, and the muscle building properties of protein and how good fats fuel mental and physical performance, even that they will do poorer at school with heavy junky carbs. Good for him!0 -
Yes! Thanks for the kind words all. Ben's information was great, I agree. I felt like such a goofball by the third time I got on the phone with him. That came across clearly but I had to get over it & just post the dang thing.
Kim: I used your picture with him at Pfx in the video.
Kevin- he talked about a Train to Hunt competiton in June but that's bow. And I mentioned your name.
Yes John, smoking cessation but that interview is nowhere to be found!!
Jennifer: I bought $12 bike shorts at Walmart the day before the run. Shirt was just the gunRunner shirt with cheapest/oldest sports bra I had.
Now I WILL spend $ on shoes and socks. I use those vivobarefoot shoes kim mentions above.
Socks- Synthetic
Happy shopping!!

Morning everybody. Friday and I'm sitting at work. GRRRRRR. Listening to Jake's podcast and he did a quick synopsis of his TM. The other guys of course are giving him grief for needing help getting out of the water after the walk the plank. Hehehe...
I'm with you Carol. I will definitely be spending money on shoes and socks. I'm HOPING to be able to wear what I already have as far as pants/shorts (must lose weight!!!!!).
Have a good day everybody. I'm going to be all out of sorts all day.0 -
Happy Friday Folks! Yep Carol that one is no where to be found. Oh Well.
Concur on all the clothing except the Bra can't confirm or deny any benefits to wearing one. Just can't help ya there.
To sort of clear up the shoes thing. For the Deepest mud what shoe you wear doesn't matter much as long as its on tight. It's the shallow mud all around the course that is tricky. I did see evidence ion the footprints of some folks trying different types of cleats. Where other footprints were smeary you could occasionally spot good clear spiked sole impressions. So worth a try in my view. If not I like the Vibrams as well, I wear New Balance vibrams daily. One other note on the mud and leg wear. I was watching a Video on the Battle of Agincourt and they did an analysis of why so many of the French Knights had so much trouble moving in the mud. What they found is that the smoother the surface the more force is required to break the suction. Makes a good point for wearing Knee High Compression Socks, or at least not shaving them for a month or so to break up the smooth surface.
All in all another great day lies ahead. Don't Forget Operation RED TOP.

John, I'm guessing the heavy armor didn't help the knights either.0

Good morning all! Hope everyone has a wonderful Friday! My progress in life is I got to see mark last night and pick his truck up from the shop. Will get to bring him back his truck tonight when I go up to his place.
Road trip this weekend. If someone would have told me this time last year that I would be shrinking into a 3rd pant size... 7/8 now! and that I would need all new clothes again I would have thought they were crazy! I am now down to a weight I haven't seen since 1996 when my middle son was born! AND the most physically fit I have ever been!
I realized yesterday that I didn't know how big I was. That it was normal for me and my eyes/mind didn't want to see how unhealthy I was. I knew that I was heavy and that it was the reason for my back and joi0 -
-
I did this since it cut off my post lol. Sorry for the double post!0

Good morning everyone! Yesterday was a day of giving as well as receiving. I helped pack 200,000 meals to send to Nepal, which was really gratifying.
But then I started working with a local program, BenchmarkProgram.org which has the goal of taking at-risk youth off the streets and into the gym. They have to do their homework and have a healthy snack before they can work out. I am SO impressed with their leader and the work he is doing. Recidivism is nearly zero! So, I asked if I can go and let some of the more advanced kids be my lifting coaches to give them experience and confidence. They surely don't usually work with a middle-aged woman! It was great, and even the non-coaching kids were cheering me on. They did a good job, challenged me, and let me share some of my knowledge with them. I know several want to do this for a career, so it is great experience for them. The equipment is stripped-down basic (they need funding), and the facility is a concrete block basement, so it is really a fun challenge. The best was blowing their minds by lifting way more than they expected.
Saturday is a planned Whole 30 bail-out day. My daughter graduates with her Master's degree from NYU next Tuesday, and we're doing a family celebration at the local ice cream parlor while she and her fiance are in town. Life into Living, as Vinnie T. says! So, a Whole 30 reboot is on the horizon.0 -
Listen to Carol, she's been to many TM. Like I said my insight is from doing sports not TM. And $12 bike shorts? Great price.
Kim, how long does the vivobarefoot last? I've been wearing Merrell for a few years now and although I love them but they wear out too fast.
Jen, LMAO on the armor comment.
Kelly, That is awesome!! What great insights. You need to post new pictures!
Cynthia. way to help the Nepalese and I hope they'll receive it soon. The last I heard a lot of people are still cut from from aid due to logistic.
Benchmark sounds like a practical program. It is nice that there are people helping at risk youths.
Congratulations to your daughter!
I finally got my Body io coach Christin, and our first consult is on Sunday so I'm really looking forward to it.
Eating wise I'm doing good, can't tell if I lost weight yet but I know I'll get there, I'm just glad that my eating is back to my old normal. And no matter what the scale says, I'm going to take progress pictures every month.
One of my foster has found her forever home. Yay! its a great fit and they are very committed and will pick her up when her last x ray shows that she is all healed. They've already requested combined 2 weeks time off from work to help with her transition. So happy for her that she has found a great home after being neglected and enduring a horrible accident. Taking my other foster to meet a potential adopter; someone we know and trust who had adopted a husky from us 3 years ago, as long as he doesn't eat the cats they will take him LOL.0 -
Yes, Carol is a Tough Mudder rock star!!!!
Heron, that's wonderful that one of your fosters has a new home. YAY!!!!
I started working on the video from the Chicago TM. It won't be any good, so keep those expectations low. I didn't get a lot of footage but Carol and I did some talking before and after that I'll include. Also have some stills that will be included (waiting for Carol to send me the ones she took so I can include them as well). Hopefully I'll have it finished this weekend.

Jen look forward to the videos!
We are taking in a 2 month husky puppy that has a bad leg. The vet thinks that he had an injury when that was never treated and the bone is growing in all wrong. We usually don't take puppies because they are a lot of work but the shelter is over its limit (as usual) and the puppy needs to be pulled ASAP. None of the foster homes can handle a medical puppy and I understand. It might sound cruel but foster homes pass on dogs all the time knowing that they'll be euthanize, we just can't save them all and still be sane. Arturo and I talked about it and I think I can handle it so come Tuesday we will have a total of 3 fosters. I don't know how I will cope but my plans of exercising more is out the window for the next few weeks and I will need to watch my food to make sure that I don't stress eat.
Wish my luck as my patience is about to be tested to the max lol. Hey, who knows if I'm lucky the puppy will be relatively easy0 -
Happy Saturday morning!
First off, I apparently am not the sharpest knife in the drawer. YOU CAN'T HAVE CHEESE ON WHOLE30!!!! GRRRRR!!!! So starting over AGAIN! Honestly, I'm going to wait until next Monday (Memorial Day) as I'll be in Arizona over the weekend and I just don't see myself doing the best job at sticking to it. I'll do my best but officially, I'll just wait.
I hit the Farmers Market this morning and picked up some radishes, salad mix and the most amazing smelling green onions (my car will be smelling like onions for days - hehehe). I absolutely LOVE fresh produce. I'll head to Fresh Market later today to pick up some other veggies and some apples that I'm going to try for my first dehydrating attempt.
Have a great day everybody.0 -
I posted the first Tough Mudder Chicago video. This one contains the chats that Carol and I had before and after the run.

Happy Saturday Folks! Not feeling well today got a gut bug. So can't get out and about,

https://youtube.com/watch?v=WesjLhpkw9s&feature=share
Heron you are a Saint! God Bless you for taking care of those doggies. Good o on getting your coach.
Cynthia Congrats on you Kiddo, and good stuff on helping the Nepalese. I had a couple guys from Nepal on my MWR Team at FOB Falcon in Iraq. They had a hard time dealing with the incoming fire and went home only a few weeks into their contract, they were great guys, hard workers, They have been in my prayers.
Kelly - Good news on the size adjustments. keep up the good work. It pays.
All Righty then. Hope this bug clears so I can work out tomorrow.0 -
Thank you John. Sorry to hear you're not feeling well (tummy bugs are no fun). Hope you feel better soon.
