What is something strange you notice since going low carb?
For me, its not being able to find chicken with the skin on at the grocery store. Today I had to go to three grocery stores before I was able to find chicken thighs wih the skin on so I could make cracklin' chicken. Geez everything was boneless skinless.

No full-fat frozen yogurt. It drives me nuts whenever I go to a froyo place with the family. I usually end up with a cup of berries and no yogurt.0

Our local grocery carries exactly two brands of full fat yogurt, and about 800 varieties of the low or no fat stuff.
People have that confused, concerned reaction when I tell them I'm eating mostly fat, and yet the idea of good fats vs bad fats is practically mainstream now. Folks still think low carb must mean high protein, and certainly not high fat.0 -
I can only find low carb yogurt at one place. Even the plain, unflavored at most stores has like 12g.

I love sugar free 15 calorie Popsicles

That everyone thinks "gluten-free" equals low carb, when in fact, the gluten-free but not low carb substitutes are sometimes higher in carbs and that originals!
And the foods I used to literally dream about taste flat, boring, overprocessed, chemical-like, and just gross now. Sometimes this really makes me sad. Other times I laugh at the relief. Still haven't braved Nutella - my former nemesis (my ex called it my "liquid crack" for obvious reasons) because I don't want to be proven wrong!0 -

Agree! Even in the store. Full fat plain Greek yougurt is almost impossible to find! I have to go out of city to get it. I'm thinking I need to just make my own.0 -
I've found companies are so sneaky! I got Crystal Light mix one time with TRUVIA emblazoned all over it, and it made me go out of keto. I looked at the side panel and one of the first ingredients was sugar!! I was so mad. At them, and at myself. Companies who say things have zero carbs (at one serving) and it's almost impossible to find a true carb count for several servings (which are commonly a normal size one serving to me) but could add 2-3 carbs to my count. Even MFP has egg carb counts ranging from 0 to 3 per egg.0

This. I was only saying to my partner the other day that it was impossible to find chicken breasts with the skin on. Also, thighs are about $4 a kg more than breasts, when breasts used to be the most expensive part of the chicken. I'm wondering if the butcher might be able to do thighs and breasts with the skin on, all of the supermarkets only have skinless.

I can't find full fat yogurt at all, greek or non. It's rather depressing as I loved greek yogurt. I've been to the Piggly Wiggly (don't laugh LOL, it's the local store), Wal Mart, WInn Dixie and Publix. Nada.
I can however get breast with skin at the Pig so I am happy about that.0 -
Agree!0

I remember Piggly Wiggly and the other stores from southeast Florida while visiting g-parents...Publix, where shopping is a pleasure! Winn Dixie single handed went out and roped and branded the best beef in the land!
Sorry, time for bed...
I haven't noticed the lack of skin in NY but I shop at the cheap stores where leg quarters average $.29 - $.49 per lb. I don't buy dairy but noticed the price for butter is outrageous. I have a stockpile of ghee and found an Indian market so I should be okay for a while.

People are not friendly to this WOE. It's as though they would rather see you throw food away than just give you what you request. Except then when you don't eat it, it's typically followed with a "you should have told me you didn't want the bun." I hate seeing good food thrown out but what's the deal with people thinking they should determine what I eat? My latest is a B&B owner that asked if I had food restrictions. I explained what I can eat and she said the best she could accommodate is an omelet with fruit and a potato. Huh? Ok... as long as your feelings aren't hurt while you're scraping that fruit and potato into the garbage.0

Oy. You can say the that again. I packed a meal to take to my friend's house - because she will not accommodate this WOE - and asked if I could use a sauce pan to heat up the soup.
You'd have thought I asked her to balance my checkbook and scrub the hubcaps on my car.
She begrudgingly allowed it, but hung over me like a boa constrictor making comments about how I probably had the heat too high and the food might crust on the pan and I wasn't allowed to use a steel wool scrubber.
Why??????
She just seems like a real prize in general lol0 -

Lol we got invited to my mother in law's for dinner the other night for my partners daughters birthday. It was a last minute thing, and we were having what the kid wanted so I said I'll bring my own to save hassle (I had cooked double the night before and had left overs). When I got there she was fussing around going "I put some vegetables on for you, and I have this chicken etc etc" and I had to keep saying "it's fine, I have dinner" (she knew I brought my own). It was so much hassle. Then after dinner she's trying to force me to "have a piece of fruit while we wait for the others to get here to have some cake". I politely said no thank you. Cake time she cuts a slice and puts it in front of me (she knows I don't eat sweets, never have) so I give it to my partner. She looks at me and says "so, you're not having any birthday cake then" like I just kicked her dog. Normally she's not too bad, if we come for afternoon tea she'll put out cheese and cold meat with the cakes and biscuits, but I think it's because I didn't eat her dinner she felt she had to try and make me have something. People are weird.
This attitude is hard to fathom, given my brother in law and his wife are strict vegan, and my sister in law is allergic to eggs and seafood, and she never trys to shove food in their faces that they don't eat.0 -
What is strange for me ..... is my tastebuds are more aware of flavour! Might be my imagination but things seem to smell and taste better. Also, I seem to be eating more slowly. Maybe because I am no longer so very, very eager for my meal. Maybe because I am finally growing up!
Per yogurt, add lactose intolerant and the choice just isn't there at all.
I am sorting out my "tropical times". It seems that if I eat sat fats, tropical times. Other fats, no tropics.
The experiment continues.
My sister in law asked me twice if I didn't want more and then stopped herself, saying she hated it when people pushed food at her. She is a gem.0 -

I have become more sensitive to tastes as well.
It has become quite a fun thing
I found Penzy's spice shop and then their web site as a great place to find interesting spices to add variety to my lower carb meals
Last year I didn't know what shallot pepper was. Now I have a moderate addiction!

Shallot pepper sounds delicious! My tastes have absolutely heightened. That's my favorite side effect, maybe even more than weight loss. Ok, not true.0

I have noticed that I am aware of things smelling very sweet...like when we walk through the Mall I feel bombarded with sweet smells and not just from the food kiosks/stalls, toiletry shops and chemists too!!1 Is this an indication of how much sugar/sweeteners are added to 'things' too?0

Buy a whole roasting chicken and cut it up yourself! Lots of youtube videos showing you how easy it us. Then roast the carcass to toss into stock makings.0 -

Agree! Diet coke is so sweet! I will dilute it half half with seltzer. It's crazy how sweet everything is. And prolly evil.0 -
Yum @KnitOrMiss0

Maybe it's a California thing but TJs always has at least two kinds of full fat yogurt and all the restaurants are serving bread/bun optional sandwiches. The two places I've eaten at lately did a nice lettuce wrap around the sandwich when I said no carbs please. So that's a step in the right direction.0

Since I have recently tried to go completely grain-free as well as LCHF, I have started to notice how many things have hidden carbs which I previously thought to be negligible, or things that have wheat which i never would have considered before. Like taco seasoning! I always figured it was low enough to not count, until I read the ingredients. The first ingredient listed is wheat flour!0

In upstate New York the Walmart brand (Great Value) of plain whole-milk Greek yogurt has a very short list of ingredients: cultured pasteurized grade A milk. The label then states: Contains live and active cultures (S. Thermophilus, L. Bulgaricus). The listed carb amount is 9 grams of sugar per cup but since it has live cultures it may be a bit less than that by the time I eat it.
My local McDonald's has also been accommodating in giving me a la carte pricing on a steak & eggs breakfast sandwich: their standard steak, eggs & a slice of cheese in a tray for less than if the had put it in a bun.

That is so cool @KeithF6250! How far upstate? I'm on Long Island or Orange County. I never though to ask for special pricing at a fast food restaurant.0
-
@KeithF6250 wow, thats good! Here(Dubai) there is a chain called Burger Fuel, from New Zealand I think. They do what they call Caburgerinator which is any burger in lettuce leaves instead of bun.....and they charge an extra 30Dhs which is an extra $8 (£5.50) for the priviledge! They get the bun and same amount of lettuce used plus the extra cash! We hate waste but for that amount extra we just buy the normal!0

That's insane! I'd boycott!
