Losing and gaining same 4 pounds...

I'm getting angry. I've been gaining and losing the same 5 pounds since September 5th. I've had a couple of unplanned high carb days but it really shouldn't account for the lack of weight loss. Last Monday I had a higher carb day due to thanksgiving and had almost lost the weight by Saturday and then I woke up this morning up up 4 pounds! I don't understand what is happening. I did lower my calories to 1650 down from 1900 about a month ago, only because I haven't been running (usually 2 days a week).

Any ideas?

I've opened up my diary.

    ... because I haven't been running (usually 2 days a week).

I stopped running from August 25 to October 8. During that period, my weight increased by 5lbs, and then decreased by 5lbs. My longest "stall" yet.

I figured since I decreased my calories by 250 a day it would balance out.

I did a quick look at 10 days of your diary..and your carbs are looking good…but your fats and protein area almost equal..it seems good the fats are at ~110 range..but 90+ protein a day may be much more than you need to be truly LCHF. ( Most Western people eat double the necessary protein anyway, a luxury others don't have)

the proportions may be off enough to stall you. More protein means more work for the body in burning calories, yes, BUT, what is not utilized is stored immediately.

also, and I sure understand this, but candy every day is a crutch, [ Yesterday I TRULY wanted to fall FACE FIRST into a big bag of Mars bars, or even candy corn..had to leave the store quick and not even LOOK at the great displays calling to the kid in me….]

You may need sweets/treats just to STAY with LC rather than getting lots of carbs,..but think about a month without any of the LC candy etc. ( maybe after Halloween since that is an issue you mentioned elsewhere.)

you may not have the most ideal LC diet, but it shows you are trying…maybe think of a "boot camp" month..and just be strict with yourself..add more veggies with butter and sour cream, less protein grams, maybe just hot cocoa LC style for the chocolate fix?

if you have been doing this diet for months and months, like me, you can drift off in small ways, and not really be true to LC at its best design. If I look at my own diet I see this after 9 months…it's not the diet..it's me cutting corners and allowing too many calories and fats more than I really need. It's a struggle for all of us.

but you keep trying..so keep on trying

Maybe. The exercise factor is kind of counter-intuitive.

If you exercise a lot, you eat more due to increased hunger.

If you exercise a bit (like 30 minutes a day), you tend not to eat back all of your exercise calories, so the fat loss from the burn is "free."

Calorie restriction, as we know, is a different animal, and your body may try to compensate by slowing you down.

The other factor is that fat loss simply slows down over time. It seems to be an exponential decay, if you like science talk. :)

@DittoDan has been fighting that slowdown recently -- maybe he has some tips. I know he's a big fan of intermittent fasting to break a stall.

Ang, Go back to what was working for you.

I've been playing the same game as you are trying to get below 150 since September 9th. This past weekend, I decided to go back and do exactly what I was doing when I first started. That is, Buckle down the LCHF, I went to the grocery store on Friday night and made LCHF meals for the weekend and this week.

For the first time in a while of bumpty bump, I dropped 1.2 this week..

I've been keto since may 4th. Have lost 37 pounds but now I'm just stuck. I do eat Atkins barsbars or a quest almost everyday. I've never lost that desire for sweets. Its lessened at some points but never gone away.

I have thought maybe I need to go back to Atkins induction for a few weeks. I've let my veggie intake slack.

I've been playing the peek a boo game with the same 5 or so pounds since APRIL. Yup. Lose it, gain it, etc. I have, however, firmly lost a pants size since then, and my mental fog relief and energy are still good, so I'm working to trust the process. Apparently 245 is a really good weight my body likes... I go a little up or down, but not much. I did however need to get my thyroid medication adjusted this visit (went in Friday), so that might play into it, but I'm finally starting to manage my sweets stuff by having a real foods based protein shake in the mornings with chocolate - it's killed all my other cravings for it, and intermittent water fasting has really helped manage the sweets cravings from noon until bedtime...

Wishing you luck figuring out your weight swap game!

Okay, I hovered around the same weight for about 5 weeks. Up a couple of pounds, down a couple of pounds. Frustrating as hell. I also noticed my protein had been a bit high. And to be honest my eating wasn't as tight as it could be. My carbs had gone from 10 to 15 up to around 25 and my calories on some days had crept up to around 1900ish. I may have also been eating those protein cookies. Once I dropped my protein back down to under 90g, my calories under 1700 and my carbs around 15g I dropped 3lbs in a week.

When I get a craving for something sweet it's usually because I've been having some Diet Coke lately or been adding too much sweetener to my coffee. For me, the cravings are directly related to consuming sweet flavored things. When I buckle down and just say no, I notice the cravings for that flavor becomes controllable. But when I do give in, I try to have some yogurt with dark chocolate shavings in it or a cup of coffee with an acceptable amount of sweetener or if I really want to indulge, I'll have no more than half of a quest bar. When I first discovered quest bars, I was eating the whole bar and finding that I couldn't wait til I could have another one. They triggered major cravings for me immediately. But I've just decided that they are basically candy bars and only indulge occasionally.
I can't deal with the cravings.

I'm going to do an egg fast to get back onto the downward swing of things. Then I'll hop back into Atkins induction.

I've considered trying an egg fast. I'm curious to see how it goes for you.
