Gaining weight again after 8 years post op

I had RNY over 8 years ago and maintained that goal weight until I had to have a hip replacement and steroid shots in my knee. Steroids must have triggered something in me that has started the weight to go back on. I'm now 30 lbs heavier again. Because of the way the RNY works hunger pangs come around every couple of hours. My dietician told me I must get 90gm of protein in a day on a 1200 cal a day diet the rest of my life. This seems like an impossibility without having a couple of Unjury protein shakes a day which have 300 cal each then the other 600 cal would have to be almost all meat. I really need to get in the protein because my hair and nails are thinning proving I'm not getting enough. I'm hoping some others out there have figgured out how to get in more protein without too many calories.

I am fairly new to the protein shakes and powders. I am waiting for my surgery date so I have been reading up on many of them. I have found that the unflavored powders are much less in calories. For example Isopure unflavored has 26 grams of protein and is 110 calories. 3 scoops would get you to 78 grams at 330 calories. I'm sure someone with more experience might be able to give more advice. Good luck!0

Premier protein ready to drinks are 160 calories, 30 g of protein. And, besides Isopure, other good sources are fairlife milk, muscle milk light, and, of course, egg whites. But, I'm an absolute newbie compared to you - I'm not quite 3 months out from my VSG. What worked for you in the past?0

Muscle milk is great, especially the Pro Series. 32g of protein for 170ish calories. Except for some required carb cycles, I eat very low carb and always will. It's so easy to keep my cals low, protein high, and still feel like I'm eating plenty of food. My diary is open.0

Gnc soy isolate is 130 cal, tastes decent, and has 28 protein. Works for me.0

I'm getting in 65 grams of protein in 650 _ 700 calories, and I could make it more. One syntrax shake, one dannon light and fit Greek yogurt, 2 oz of ground turkey, a few meatballs, 4 oz of soy milk, one baby bell light cheese, or a second Greek yogurt... it's not hard. I just pick my proteins very carefully. They have to be low-fat. Getting 90 grams in 1200 calories would be a piece of cake (sorry, bad simile!).
I have to admit, I let myself have one tortilla a day, 60 calories and 13 grams of carbs. That is my indulgence! After eight years, maybe it's time to go back to basics for a while? Bummer about the steroids.

Eat Meat! Keeps you full much longer! When I drink a protein shake now I am hungry within a couple hours, or less! When I eat a steak I'm not hungry for several hours!
Another thing I've learned is not to return to eating the way I did that made me fat in the first place. My goals do not include that at all! Remember, Insanity can be defined by doing the same things, over and over, and expecting different results! I changed what I eat and it's making the difference! Good luck!0 -
My Wednesday diary was finished at 1200 calories and 129 g protein, so it's definitely not impossible. I also do not do protein shakes per se.
Every morning I do make 4 shots of espresso and add a Big Train Fit Frappe Espresso flavored scoop of protein powder in which adds 70 calories, 10 g of protein, and 0 sugars. As I said, I don't really even do this for the protein since I have no trouble getting it in elsewhere, but it keeps me from throwing in milk and sugar and whipped cream or whatever else since the powder is well flavored itself. Just doesn't hurt that it's also got 10 proteins.
Some days after doing some cardio or something, I might want a cool refresher with protein. Instead of using protein powders, I usually just make a smoothie with plain fat free greek yogurt, some frozen fruit, and either a sugar-free popsicle, some low calorie orange juice, or a splenda. Even my non-dieting friends love my smoothies.
I do make sure all of my meals have some sort of protein, but not in the way everyone else always seems to do it. If I just wanna have a salad for a meal (not a big fan of meat in my salads), I make sure I'm not adding high-calorie/fat sauces on top and I still have plenty of room to eat a half a protein bar with it.
I love my homemade shrimp stir fry (209 calories, 19 carbs, 2 fats, 27 proteins, 11 sugars). Some days I'll do it without the stir fry sauce which knocks off 40 cals, 8 carbs, and 6 sugars).
I also love tilapia fish tacos. For mine, the whole taco would be 328 cals/ 24carbs/ 8fats/ 44 proteins/ 7 sugars. I can never eat the whole taco though and usually half it with someone. I just make it with frozen tilapia fillets, mushrooms, onions, low fat cheese, plain fat-free greek yogurt (lots of protein), tomatoes, salsa verde, and a low carb whole wheat tortilla.
