I'm embarrassed by this new way of life. There I said it.

I went to the store today. Some of my favorite dark chocolate with almonds was on sale, so I stocked up. At the register, the petite clerk said "is that your favorite?"

me: I like it, and it's on sale, so I'm stocking up.
she: Oh, I've never tried it.

Then she takes a bag and reads the nutrition label!

she: Hmm, not bad!
me: I consider it one of the lesser evils.

I felt so judged! :)

I have no idea what she was looking for on the package, but of course I had to read it myself when I got back to the car. 11g of sugar! OMG! Now I felt guilty. That's well within my carb budget, but I suddenly felt the presence of DittoDan saying "4g of sugar is a whole teaspoon!" And mine had 11g! Embarrassment! Guilt!

I calmed down and took the dog for a walk.

It's squirrel season around here. My dog remembers every place she's ever seen a squirrel, and she likes to sprint to that location from about a block away.

I like to sprint too, so I indulge her. Usually there's nobody around when we're sprinting to the next squirrel spot.

This time, an old guy was walking his dog and he appeared over the horizon as we finished a sprint.

me: Mornin'!
he: That was a lot of energy!
me: (Not sure if he's talking about me or the dog.) Yup, it's squirrel season.

Embarrassment again! Having this much energy simply isn't acceptable. :)

I'm loving this post! And I love squirrels. My ADD makes me not completely unlike your dog upon spotting a squirrel...

I was rather embarrassed the other day by the effects of large doses of magnesium on my digestive system, but other then that, I love this WOE, and actually enjoy the strange looks I get when I nibble on butter at the restaurants while refusing the bread.

Enjoy the extra energy, its one of my favorite side effects!

I was checking out at the grocery store the other day and the guy bagging my pork rinds asked the cashier if she'd ever tried them and was saying how disgusting they smell...I did feel judged! lol

Along these same lines, I do actually hate when I have to buy some carby junk. It's exhilarating when I have a cart full of meat and 10 packages of bacon, but (for example) if I need Oreos to put in a recipe that someone asks me to make for a party, I probably look like a teenager buying condoms...I don't want anyone to see lol :D:D I know in general people don't care, and 0.001% of people are paying attention to what I'm buying, but still. I feel like it reflects poorly.

I like when the only things in the cart are my food. When I roll up to the register with 40 pounds of beef, 12 pounds of bacon, five dozen eggs, and a bunch of sparkling water. I get the best kind of looks from people.

Of course, it's been mostly beef alone lately. The price increase in bacon and eggs, over the last few months, is putting a serious dent in my lifestyle.

Pork rinds. I always feel self conscious when I buy those things. It's like buying condoms. I'm middle aged! I should be okay with buying pork rinds. LOL

Oh Puleese. Sorry, But most grocery store clerks and cashiers are HS kiddos making minimum wage.
@wab - you are doing great, enjoy it and be yourself.

This makes me think of my thirteen year old making fun of my "mom" clothes. I just tell him to shut up, respect your mother, take your cap off and pull up your pants.

I had a waitress ask for an ID, then say, O'MY I didn't realize you were THAT old! I told her, her job was not to comment on IDs.. Kids these days... LOL

I got judged by a pimply 17yo when I put my bacon, eggs, cheese, pate, cream and butter on the checkout. He looked at me with a pained look and said "that's an awful lot of animal fat".

I'm shocked by some of what I'm reading here! Where on the planet is it acceptable behaviour for cashiers and bag boys to make what could be construed as judgmental comments on what people are buying???!!!

In my case, she was kinda cute, and she was probably flirting with me. <3

Well . . . there's nothing wrong with a little flirting to put some bounce in your step. :)

I find beef prices crazy high. 4.29$/lb if I am lucky (bulk) for 80/20 ground beef. Rib eye or strip steak (nice and fatty) I snap up at 8.99$/lb. I'd make more roasts, but even those run around 5.99-6.99$/lb and I am talking chuck and eye of round, basically braising/stewing meat, but they are not a huge hit with half my family. It's crazy when II can buy chicken breast (bulk) anywhere from 1.99$/lb to 2.49$/lb. Even chicken thighs seem more expensive to comparable types of white meat chicken these days. And pork? Even the nice fatty cuts seem pricey.

    End rant.

I was just griping about this last night. Boneless, skinless chicken breasts are less expensive than split chicken breasts. So the butchers go through all that work to remove the skin and the bone and somehow it costs less than the ones they just slap on a tray? I'd much rather have the skin on, then save the bones for broth.

    Love this post.
I am looking forward to that extra energy phase. Yesterday I actually felt energetic at first but then I only made it through 2 miles of what was supposed to be a 4-mile run training for my Thankgiving Day 5K. You give me hope that the energy and stamina will come back. :)

Heh, yes, pork rinds do get looks. BTW: (for everyone), if you have issues with MSG, at least one of our members does if memory serves, get the plain rinds, and read labels. Many of the flavored ones have MSG.pv5qii73hzyr.jpg

I could care less about what anyone thinks about a lifestyle that has helped me reverse 3 serious health issues, and after losing 120 pounds has me feeling and looking pretty good when dresses. If they dont like it they can lump it.
What does embarass me is the thought of what it has done to my birthday suit in relation to thinking about how i might look to a potential partner. Not at all nice. Loose skin, scars, droopy chest and derriere. This embarrassment is keeping me from allowing myself to get close to someone, which is so sad as i sometimes feel so profoundly lonely. I really haven't found a strategy for coping with this reality. Has anyone else felt this way or found a way to deal?

A lot of the checkers and other people working in the grocery store comment on what I buy. We swap recipes and talk about food. I prefer to act as if I'm supremely decadent, not concerned about my health, as it is more fun to check out with a basket full of butter, cream, cheese, bacon, chocolate, and meat that way.

@elize7 , I've felt lonely, and I empathize. I know that you don't have to be anywhere near perfect to find a loving partner. Your vulnerability can be a strength. Be kind to yourself, no matter what.

Where do you people shop? I'm lucky if I get a "Hey, you want bags?" out of the cashiers where I live. LOL
I do feel a bit embarrassed when I have to eat out or have drinks with business associates. They all order heavy craft beers and I just have a plain Vodka Soda with lemon. I've had the comment (meant as a joke), "Did you forget your purse at home, Sally?" It's easy for me to laugh it off and tell them where to go, but still it's a bit awkward, and then I feel obliged to say I am cutting carbs.

Pork rinds are not my thing, but my Facebook post of schmaltz and greibens that I had just made did not get many likes! (Rendered chicken fat and chicken cracklings/rinds).

@elize7, I know there are plenty of guys around here in the same situation. No advice, but probably the main thing that keeps my wife and me together is mutual tolerance of faults and foibles.

Speaking of fidelity, studies have shown that people who get embarrassed are better monogamous partners and generally more reliable. And we're more generous.

Embarrassment is one emotional signature of a person to whom you can entrust valuable resources. It's part of the social glue that fosters trust and cooperation in everyday life.

Pork rinds are awesome and a life saver when I'm really being strict with my eating!

Have you spoken to a Dr. to see what medical options may be available for you? If it is something that is affecting you so strongly, perhaps a medical procedure might be a viable option.

I am lucky in that I have a man that loves me fat or thinner and all the stages in between. Be proud of yourself @elize7 you worked hard to get to where you are. Any partner worth having will not care about some saggy skin.

The saggy skin will tone up though won't it? I hope it does,

To an extent. That limit depends on the length of time the skin was abused and on genetics.
Mine is slowly pulling in some, but there will be sag. There will always be stretch marks, though. I'll never wear a bikini. I rock a one-piece though.

I get teasing from the DH a lot about it. It's more apparent during certain...ahem...intimate situations. I then respond with, "You want me to regain the 100lbs? No? You like this better? Then, shut up. You can't have it both ways."

It is what it is. I overlook his hairyness. And manly BO and his personality flaws, and he'll deal with the lose skin.

It doesn't matter in the dark anyway.

At some point --when I maintain my goal weight for at least a year and really work out to tone, I might try laser skin tightening. Although I've also read it doesn't help large weight loss without surgery.
Right now, my arms are starting to embarass me in sleeveless tops. I look like a granny. Good thing winter is coming.
