If you fast or fat fast for a day, or make your exercise very intense, it should bump you into, or deeper into, ketosis.

If you are eating those macros, you are probably in or near ketosis. Could you be eating too much?

What test are you using? If the urine stick, it may not be too reliable. Blood ketone meter is better or breath monitor if you can find one.

Grams is more important than percent. You could eat 5% carbs from 3000 calories and not be in ketosis. If you are under 20g carbs, and your tracking is accurate (you are weighing and recording absolutely everything you eat and drink, not just guestimating) then you're doing it right.

Blood ketone monitors are just glucose monitors that can also read ketone test strips. Nova Max and Precision Xtra both sell versions of their meters that do ketone measuring as well. Just make sure to check the box to ensure you're getting the right model. Often, if you search for "blood ketone meter free" you'll find deals on a meter and set of strips for about $30 (the price of the strips, and you get the meter for "free").

A fasting day can be eating nothing, and a fat fast is a day when you eat lower than normal calories (like 500 or so) but eat only fats like cream or coconut oil (in coffee is tasty).

A mentioned it because fasting will empty your glycogen stores and get you into (or deeper into) ketosis faster.

Take a look at this doctor's blog on fasting -- he posts lots on the topic. https://intensivedietarymanagement.com/the-fasting-advantage-part-14/
There are lots of others if you google "lchf intermittent fasting exercise".

Basically, once you have gotten adjusted to eating LCHF or keto, you don't feel as hungry all the time. So it is easier when fasting. If you are doing lots of exercise, however, your hunger will increase (and you will need to feed protein to your body to rebuild those muscles). So you may want to cut back on exercise on the day when you fast.

I didn't feel comfortable fasting for a long time, at least 4 months. Even now I like a fat fast. I think the 500-800 calories in a day suits me better because I like to drink and sip my calories so I have a few bulletproof coffees and then some broth and tea. I feel more satisfied than when I eat smaller meals. It's probably an individual thing.

I ate only 800 calories yesterday to get my ketones up again. It was BPC, broth, 1/4 c macadamias, and 2 pepperoni sticks. It bumped my ketostox back to small amounts (I tend to hover around trace and sometimes negative). Lately I'll do that a couple of times per week, but usually without the nuts and pepperoni. My normal days are usually around 1500 calories (I am still trying to lose the last 10 lbs).

I only do it if I am not feeling hungry that day, or if I'm out all day and not tempted to snack. If I am hungry after not eating or the first part of the day, I skip the low calorie day and eat, and possibly try again in a few more days.

If you went into ketosis and used ketones efficiently, you might not have high levels in your urine at all. Alternatively, your strips could be faulty.

@phuonguk I have been eating this way over a year now and it did take a few months before I mastered getting into ketosis and staying in that state most of the time. While I do not monitor it totally my macro is more like 5% carbs, 15% protein and 80% fats.

Normally I eat a 1300 calorie breakfast of mainly fats before I leave the house daily. Often I eat out twice daily. Yesterday I ate at McDonald's twice and that bumped up my level of ketosis.

I am currently heavy into testing Wobenzym N systemic enzyme tablets that is part of a cancer treatment protocol and also testing its purported claims to improve lipid numbers. From my tests two weeks ago my cholesterol was down 25% from 90 days ago for some reason. Testing Wobenzym N has forced me into intermittent fasting (IF) to a degree. One can not take Wobenzym until it has been 2 hours past any eating and one can not eat 1 hour after taking the Wobenzym.

It took a bit to learn how to successfully eat low carb at McDonalds. Each meal yesterday was 2 round eggs and 1 round sausage and 2-3 senior cups of coffee with 7 half and half creamers in each cup. Locally the round eggs are $.99 each as each piece of sausage. Some will have to call the manager to know how to ring them up I have found. The round egg made from fresh cracked real eggs when you order and is cooked in real butter. The sausage does contain some sugar but no grains.

Another factor delaying getting into ketosis I think in my case was my state of health and obesity. Liver is the source of ketone production I think so the liver may need a few weeks/months to recover. I expect I had a leaky gut because the 40 years of IBS cleared up totally after eating only keto for six months.

Bottom line in my case I decided to eat keto day in and day out for 90 days before I decided if keto worked for me or not. After just 30 days when my pain levels dropped from 7-8 to 2-3 I had my first clue and that was over a year ago and nutritional ketosis is still my way of eating. :)

    Best of success.

@phuonguk nutritional ketosis initially was used to control neurological conditions like epilepsy in children. Some use it for bipolar, diabetes, attention deficit disorder, etc.

I eat keto for pain manage but it does help with the weight as I have noted. I really doubt you have any unhealthy fat to lose. If I remember correctly a stone is 14 pounds.

Any way of eating that keeps one away from processed/fast foods is a plus. I have read how keto is a low inflammatory way of eating (WOE) so it should reduce the risks of cancer, heart disease, cataracts in the eyes, Alzheimer's and on and on. At age 64 all of these are conditions I want prevent from occurring in my body. :)

Another thing is that continuing to lift heavy/do intense cardio while you are starting a ketogenic diet kind of distorts all numbers. That is most likely a contributing factor here, too. You're likely to suffer some performance setbacks while your body rewires your muscles to burn fats instead of or in addition to carbs, and then you'll surpass that once your muscles are converted. If you have an exercise session, try doing it on an empty stomach...it will burn through any carbs left/stored in your muscles and such - but too much intensity before you're adapted will have the "emergency release" of blood sugar from your liver, defeating the purpose. You might consider dialing back your workouts until you adjust properly to eating this way.
