Hi,

Not new to dieting or this site. but new to LCHF.

After falling of the wagon, I think I am ready to jump back on, and find something that works for me that I can stick to.

I have always been curious about a LCHF diet, and it has taken me quite a while to get out of the low fat / low calorie mentality to lose weight.

However, being a 39yr old female, 5ft11 / 180cm weighing 243lb, all around my middle (classic Apple shape) with high blood pressure, my GP recommended trying the 'eat fat to burn fat' diet, and reducing my carbs.

Can someone tell me if my daily Macros look right. 1400Kcal, 10% carb, 60% fat, 30% protein ?

Contrary to the above stats, I am not a massive eater, I just make really bad choices. I used to enjoy a weekly 24hr fast, and have thought about incorporating that into the diet, but don't know whether it would be compatible. Does anyone have any thoughts/ experience of fasting while on a LCHF diet.

Lastly, I could do with some LCHF friends to help keep me on track, please feel free to add me or send me a friend request.

Welcome! Nice that your Dr recommended this. Mine did too last March, I swear her one comment to me to eat less carbs, changed my life.

Your macros look good, you might want to move some of the protein over to fat though depending how you feel. I aim for a little higher protein but I'm only at 25%. It's very individual though so if you feel good go with it.

Make sure you read through the launch pad, especially about getting enough sodium, I can't stress that enough, I make this mistake every time and you don't want your electrolytes out of whack, it's not fun.

I know there are many that do fasting or IF along with low carb and they work very well together. I don't have experience with that but @dittodan and @kitnthekat are two that come too kind that can offer more info.

    Good luck!

Welcome to the forum. Lots of great people and info here. Your macros look pretty good. I would agree with @auntstephie321 that maybe drop the protein a bit and move it to fat. I try for 5% Carb, 70% Fat, and 25% Protein. But people tweak it to what works for them.

    thanks for the feedback.

I actually used an online calculator to work out my macros, and they did come out as Carbs 10%, Protein 20%, and Fat 70%, but this looked a bit too much fat too me, so I adapted it slightly...it will be a bit of trial and error, but I comfortable with these percentages at the moment.

The Salt / Sodium thing is another thing I'm trying to get my head around. I am constantly being told to cut salt, and that it's no good, especially for my blood pressure. I have set the counter to 2300mg, the maximum daily recommendation, but understand I will need to get better at keep hydrated (something I'm not too good at) and may need to increase sodium / salt if I start to get the Low carb flu due to my body disposing of excess fluid and electrolytes. This is something I am mindful of.

    Alright, lets do this!
I am taking the plunge and going with the online calculator and recommendations of those with more experience / knowledge than me. I have to start somewhere, and can always tweak the numbers later if I need to. I have to start somewhere, so I am going all in with Carbs 10%, Protein 20% and Fat 70%

Don't want to up the salt. @wabmester has lots of knowledge on this. Once you start getting low carb flu your electrolytes are already out of balance and you will have lost potassium with the sodium, there is no reason to suffer. Don't fear the sodium, it's going to take some adjustment in mind set, same thing with the fat. It was hard for me in the beginning too, it's so opposite of what we've learned for years.

I don't want you to suffer like I have this week because I didn't up my sodium. And I've been doing this almost a year, I was staying higher carb but once I added exercise in I was producing more ketones and as my body dumped the excess out via urine it took my sodium with it and then potassium. I think I've gotten it back in track when broth and potassium and magnesium supplements, but it's better to avoid the flu all together.

I would recommend waiting for a few weeks before starting any fasting. Let you body become keto adapted first. After that you may find that fasting is pretty easy on keto because you're never really hungry anyway. An easy way to start is simply going 8/16 meaning you fast for 16 hours out of 24. Basically, don't eat anything after supper and skip breakfast. Personally I shoot for 5% carbs and don't worry too much about protein and fat. After you get used to logging and adding high fat foods the fat macro tends to work itself out. Just try to avoid eating things like boneless skinless chicken breast.

I agree with upping salt a bit before you feel bad. You may be a little tired at first anyways so adding low electrolytes will be no fun.

Just add a cup of salty broth to your day to start with. That might be enough for you.

Welcome! I'm also 39 and was an apple shape when I started keto. My shape has shifted a bit since then! Glad to have a waist again thanks to several months on keto. ;)
You've already gotten some good advice. FWIW I did 1350 cals (recently upped to 1400 after I hit my original goal weight; trying to lose a few more lbs to cut body fat % some more) 65% fat, 25% protein, 10% carbs but often my fat ends up at or just over goal and my protein is often a bit under so in reality I'm probably more like 70/20/10 most of the time.

Welcome ! I'm sorry I didn't see this thread sooner, MFP isn't working very well lately.

Please feel free to add me. I am a long time faster. Fasting becomes very doable and less of a hardship once you are keto adapted. My macros are 5% carbs, 75% fat and 20% protein I think, or it could be 70% fat and 25% protein, but I usually eat 75% fat, some days closer to 80% fat. The fat part takes some getting used to if you have been brainwashed to a low fat way of eating. I think my body is finally feeling like it should, by eating more fat.

My normal eating pattern is one meal per day at 6:00 pm for supper. At first I started skipping lunch, then found I didn't need to eat breakfast either. So I guess that they call me an intermittent faster. But I also really like to have longer fasts from 48 to 72 hours, once or twice weekly. I completed a 71.5 hour fast on Friday. I only ate 5 meals last week total. Feels really good. Eating one meal per day eliminates hunger and I have even energy all day, but fasting for longer than 24 hours keeps me burning fat but also improves mental clarity and function, elevates my mood and totally eliminates cravings to eat. The body and mind get quiet yet energized. I felt like superwoman really.

There is lots of great info and support here. Feel free to ask us anything. Good luck.

    Hi,

Just a word of caution about fasting. It is easier when keto adapted and this diet does lower BP over time but..... I have consistently found that my BP rises during fasting. Since you are an experienced faster, you might not have this problem. I did, so I watch it during my fasts and I break my fast before it climbs too high.

    Best wishes

I'm IF more now automatically after I've been in ketisis. Just listen to your body and log everything. It is so easy to forget what you did last week when you are trying things out, or wondering if you should tweek your %s, or when you want to kick a stall or plateau.

You are in the right place. LCHF is not a short term diet, it is a lifestyle that you can stay with forever. I have been doing this for 7 months now & shed 72lbs. Totally different to the 3 week stints on many other diets I've tried for the last 40 years.

    Hi,

Not new to dieting or this site. but new to LCHF.

First of all, WELCOME! Our stats are very similar - I'm 5'11 and 260. My current macros are: 1500 calories, 10% carbs, 25% fat, 65% fat. I do sometimes have trouble keeping my fat that high, but I'm getting used to it. I've lost 5lb this week!

Please feel free to add me if you'd like, as we both embark on this journey.

If you don't reach the fat goal that's ok. You'll just burn that much more from your stored fat.
